Why Diane Peterson chose Sky Valley

We love the ruralness of the DCL area and just sitting by the lake and enjoying the quiet. Six acres provides a good bit of privacy, but we also like the restaurants and activities a resort area provides. We have a large family and a larger extended family, it is nice to accommodate our family comfortably. When we purchased the house we knew it would be a rewarding and challenging project to convert it from a commercial property to a home. We plan and do most of the improvements ourselves and it has been a great experience. There is still much to be done and every year our returning guests find a new project finished.

What makes this house unique

The Lodge is the only handicapped facility on the lake. It has many amenities inside the house to accommodate elderly or handicapped family members as well as a gently sloping asphalt path to the lake that is easily navigated and wheelchair friendly.

A Perfect Place

  • 5 of 5

This lodge is ideal for large groups wanting to escape for the weekend. We hosted a gaming weekend with 20 attendees and the lodge was perfect for us. There was plenty of table space, the bedrooms were perfect and having two refrigerators, two ovens/stoves was amazing! If you are looking for an escape that can accommodate a lot of people this is your lodge! Diane was extremely helpful and easily accessible by both phone and text messages. Thanks for helping us form wonderful memories!

Beautiful home & property!

  • 5 of 5

The Lodge is great for a family vacation! We had 16 people that ranged in ages from 2 months to 88 years old. Very clean and well furnished. Plenty of room for everyone to spread out, relax, play games, watch movies, enjoy the beautiful view of the lake from the deck and there is easy lake access. Diane checked in on us and made sure we were comfortable. Lots of shade by the lake with a nice swing, table and bench so the lake view can be enjoyed without too much sun exposure. There is a paved path leading from the front door to the lake. It is a little steep, but was not prohibitive to my mother-in-law as long as taken slow with someone by her side. We enjoyed the dock for our rental pontoon boat as well as fishing. There is a wonderful fire area and a picnic table. This was a great vacation experience and we hope to rent again! Thank you Diane for sharing 'The Lodge' with our family!

Wonderful house for a large group! Great outdoor area!

  • 5 of 5

We had a large group and we still felt like we had so much room. We loved the dock and area for sitting by the dock. We used the front porch area also, it was great! We ranged from 87 years old to 1 year old and everyone had a great time! Thank you! We will be back.

Perfect location, Beautiful home!

  • 4 of 5

When driving down the lane to your home, we had no idea what to expect. WOW are the words that come to mind when we walked into your home. Your home is beautiful, in a perfect location with beautiful views, and was the best we could ask for in the layout for our group of elderly sisters. The layout allowed for all of us to be together for socializing, games, puzzles and dinners while it also allowed for some privacy when desired. The hot tub was a first for many of our party and was a big hit! Thank you so much for opening your home to us! We will definitely be back

Big Family Vacation

  • 5 of 5

This house was perfect for our needs. We had 18 people and all ranging from 2 years old to grandparents. We loved that the house was all one level so no stairs for the little (or old ones) to traverse! The living room was our favorite place to hang out, besides the hot tub. It had big comfy couches and two tables - plenty of space for puzzles and kid crafts! The dining room was large enough to seat almost everyone and having two stoves in the kitchen was perfect. Most of all the owners were very nice, easy to deal with and very responsive. Great vacation - thanks!

Deep Creek and Swallow Falls State Parks also provide marked hiking trails which can be used by cross-country skiers. New Germany provides cleared and maintained trails as well as a snow cleared parking lot.

Summer Activities

Water Sports are very popular summer activities Deep Creek Lake. Powerboats and jet skis are available for rent at local marinas. For the sailboat enthusiast you will enjoy the exciting regattas that take place on the southern end of the lake near The Lodge at Sawmill Hollow. Boat and water sports equipment rentals as well as all the other outdoor gear you'll need can be found at nearby locations. Whitewater rafting and Canoeing offer excitement and amazing scenery just minutes away from Deep Creek Lake. You can enjoy Whitewater rafting on the gentle waters of the Middle Youghiogheny or the challenging rapids of the Upper Yough. Also try the new ASCI Adventure park at Wisp Resort for a man made course offering various levels of rafting fun.

Want something more low key? You can also enjoy the scenery by canoeing and kayaking on the Savage and Youghiogheny Rivers.

Fall Activities

For many visitors to Deep Creek Lake, the fall offers a world of spectacular fall colors as the trees display their own 'Autumn Glory'. The lake area is beautiful and peaceful this time of year as the summer winds down. While you can still continue to power boat and sail into the fall, the autumn air is crisp so dress warmly-and is there a better way to view the fall foliage than by water? We don't think so. The fishing can also be fantastic this time of year as the fish stock up on forage for the approaching winter.

Autumn Glory Festival is a most anticipated event at Deep Creek for Fall visitors. The annual Autumn Glory Festival is held in mid-October in nearby Oakland, Maryland. For three days the town hosts many great events such as sthe Maryland State Banjo and Fiddle Championships, parades, Oktoberfests, pancake breakfasts, arts and crafts, antiques, a wide variety of foods, and more. Be sure to book The Lodge at Sawmill Hollow early as this is one of the most popular weekends all year!

Exploring the Trails by horseback is a relaxing but exciting way to spend an autumn day. Hayrides, carriage rides as well as overnight pack trips are also available. With 74,000 acres of state forests, hiking and mountain biking are a great way to see this amazing area and the beautiful fall scenery.

Deep Creek Lake and nearby Oakland host many festivals throughout the year.

Looking for a day trip? Frank Lloyd Wright's 'Falling Waters' is approximatel 50 minutes from the Lodge and just a wonderful trip.

During the winter months it is best to have a 4 wheel drive vehicle. The community is excellent about clearing the roads, but occasionally if you are arriving during a storm we have one hill which is difficult to get up in two wheel drive.
