This is our second stay in this apartment. The apartment is so lovely and clean. We have stayed at other places on the beach which allowed pets and they were a bit run down. Everything is so squeaky clean and well maintained. Sally treats everyone like family and really wants everyone to have the very best experience. In addition to long walks on the beach, I spent many hours on the lovely seats built into the walkway to the beach. I could enjoy the beach views and sounds without getting sand in my toes.

There are several great dog-friendly restaurants on Vilano Beach so no need to drive far for someplace to eat. We hope to return next year.

Owner's Response: This lovely couple returned to Surfside Retreat this year for another week of vacation. They had just lost their sweet little dog last year before coming down so needless to say they had heavy hearts when getting here. After a few days they went online located a shelter and found the most adorable dog and filled that void in their hearts and made one little dog very happy. We are a family and pet friendly vacation spot. We have always accepted families but didn't always accept pets until one day I decided that pets were a part of our families as well, so why not invite them to vacation at the beach. Fond memories for me were when my three grandchildren would come to visit us at the beach (1997) and my husband would get all of us up at 6:30 AM so that he, the Pomeranian, Lab and three grandchildren would take off running down the beach and find shells before others got to them first. I, of course, was left behind to get breakfast cooked for those starving kids. All are grown now and some with their own families but those memories remain. So make your own memories with your spouse, children, grandchildren or your pets and do it now at Surfside. We welcome you, your children and also your four legged child. Sally

Loved our extended stay at Surfside Retreat!

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I had the privilege of staying at Surfside Retreat for over three months. The Retreat served as our temporary quarters while we were building a new home. We moved into unit A on September 1st and had to vacate due to the visit of an uninvited guest, Hurricane Irma, on September 11. Moved back in five days later to find the place virtually unscathed. We enjoyed Unit A for about a month and a half, then moved upstairs to unit C. Unit A is a two bed one bath apartment that is very clean and cozy. You step out of the beachside door and you are literally 30 feet from the dunes. We enjoyed many evenings sipping our favorite beverages on the patio overlooking the dunes. Unit C is a 3 bed two bath apartment with a huge deck overlooking the beach. Best place ever to enjoy a beautiful sun or moon rise. Both units were well equipped and tastefully decorated. The location is great, with a grocery store as well as great, unique local eateries just a five minute drive away. This place is great. The best part of our 14 week stay at Surfside Retreat was getting to know Sally, the owner of the property. Sally went out of her way to ensure that our accommodations were clean, comfortable, and safe during our stay. Thank you Sally, we hope to return to Surfside Retreat for a ONE WEEK vacation in the near future!

Great Location for a Fun Getaway!

  • 4 of 5

We had a wonderful 10 days at Surfside Retreat A! It worked out great for the two of us and our little dog. As advertised it's steps from the beach, very clean and well kept. The kitchen is well stocked for cooking, but we chose not to do any grilling on the electric grill. Actually, we didn't want to cook much, because we found four great restaurants near Vilano Beach, so we didn't have to wait for traffic going into St. Augustine. Perfect place for two Midwesterners to get away from the cold weather up north! The only reason we gave this place a "4" instead of a "5" is that being in the lower unit(s) did not afford a view of the ocean, nor can you hear the sound of the waves. The next time we come to the Surfside Retreat, we will try to reserve the apartment on the second floor.

Owner's Response: Unfortunately, the view of the ocean is somewhat diminished because of the dunes. In 1999 our dune was taken away with Hurricane Floyd about 200 miles off the coast of Florida but we were able to keep our house and dock. In 2016 the dune had built back up but then came Hurricane Mathew that paid us a visit and wiped out a portion of the walkover and our fence. When we had almost recovered from Mathew along came Irma in 2017, Irma did no damage to dock, fence or building but did remove some of the dune cover but then along came a couple of N'Easter's and built the dune system back up.....which helps protect our homes. Several people lost their homes to the ocean when these storms came through the area the past two years. The walkover does extend out to the sand and has two six foot benches connected to it that you can sit on and enjoy the wind and the breaking waves. When I vacationed there in Unit B (lover level) for eleven years and lived in Unit C (upper level) for fifteen years, I guess I took all that beauty for granted but I go over frequently now because I only live a few miles west of Surfside. This is why I am so excited to share all of this beauty with everyone and I haven't found anyone that has been disappointed as yet. Hope to see you here again!! Sally

Owner's Response: I made it over to the condo to meet our guests the day before they were to leave for their long journey home and hope a very safe one. I have been blessed to have some wonderful guests stay at Surfside in my twenty years of renting these condos. I can only hope that they enjoyed their visit to our area and Surfside and that they will again return another day, month or year. Sally
