Markwell Farm is situated about 1.5 miles from Landrake village and the A38. Easily accessible, it is reached just 5 miles after crossing the River Tamar at Plymouth. Its quiet location affords superb views over rolling countryside with the spectacular St Germans viaduct and the River Tiddy as its centrepiece. The farm, which is 400 acres, has suckler cows and a large sheep flock as well as growing arable crops. Of course there are also a collection of dogs, cats, ponies, goats and pet lambs to greet you and make friends with. Two 18th century barns have been tastefully converted into 4 cottages each sleeping between 2 and 6 people. Offering high quality, self-catering accommodation in a tranquil location but within easy reach of the best that Cornwall has to offer. Children are welcome and we can accept dogs in some of the cottages. While it is a commercially run farm, features have been enhanced to ensure that visitors are able to enjoy their stay to the full. Find Markwell Farm on Google.
Markwell Farm: Visitors are encouraged to walk round the farm and enjoy the views and the animals. There is plenty of space for children to play.
Look out for the Buzzards and the Badgers, listen for the owls at night.
Here at Markwell we have a 40 cow suckler beef herd which calves in the spring and a large sheep flock. The flock is made up mainly of commercial breeds but we do have a few rare breed White faced Dartmoor ewes who are a small hardy breed local to the area. This breed of sheep featured on the award-winning film 'Warhorse', filmed on location on Dartmoor.
Also on the farm we have a collection of vintage tractors which range in age from 1926 to 1960. We will be happy to show them to you.
Beaches: South East Cornwall enjoys some lovely sandy beaches. From the small villages of Kingsand and Cawsand to the rock pools of Downderry and Seaton. At low tide there is a large stretch of sand at Whitsand Bay, though the walk back up is a bit steep. Looe combines the beach for the children with the shops and wonderful cream teas.

All 4 of us enjoyed our stay at Markwell Farm. Alison's scones on arrival were amazing! The accommodation was adequate, clean and tidy and we could easily access the parts of Cornwall we wanted to see. The pub in the village is excellent and their Sunday lunch is superb.
If you're looking for a peaceful location with fabulous views the look no further than here. The views from the windows are superb, across and along the river, with the viaduct framing it and the fields all around it's perfect if that's what you're looking for. Absolutely fantastic for stargazing on a clear night! The Shippen was comfortable, well appointed and, apart from an awkwardly placed microwave and fridge freezer under the stairs is all you need for a self catering holiday. The main bedroom is accessed through the twin but if a young family is staying that's probably not a problem. Alison, our host, was really friendly and welcoming. Quite easy to get to Plymouth or over to Dartmoor and only a short drive down to places like Looe, Fowey or Charlestown and the Eden Project.
A great place to stay. Mobile phone signal is poor though.
We had a wonderful time staying at The Shippen on Markwell farm. The view of the farm and viaduct from our bedroom was stunning. We used the farm as a base to visit a lot of Cornwall's delights. These included The Eden Centre (the zipwire is a must!), St. Ives, Padstow, Looe, Polperro, Newquay - Fistral Beach, Land's End, Port Isaac and Bude.
Hospitality at the farm was great. Scones with jam and clotted cream all ready for us on arrival. ideal after a journey down from Glasgow. Our son was delighted to find how close he could get to the sheep, goats, cows, horses, dogs, cat and Llama's.
At night you can sit outside with a glass of wine and look up into a sky just bursting with stars (no light pollution!) - Just ideal! Very quiet, peaceful nights sleep.
Would whole heartedly recommend.
We spent one wonderful week in The Shippen. Allison and Matthew were very friendly. OUR KIDS (13 and 10 years old) enjoyed the farm with the animals, especially molly, the dog. Our daughter would be very happy, if Allison could give her the receipe for the awesome scones, we get as a welcome.
We made a lot of trips, Eden Project and Tintagel for example.
We can realy recommend The Shippen and the farm and for sure we will book it once more for holidays there.
Thank you very much for these wonderful days.
We love Markwell. We have visited the farm a number of times and have stayed in most of the cottages now. All are lovely, well equipped and comfortable. The owners, Allison and Matthew and their children are very welcoming, friendly and helpful.
Why do we return? A feeling of home from home, the beautiful views and the freedom to stroll around wonderful countryside with our dogs ensuring that after a few days all the stress of everyday life melts away. Will we go again - yes definitely! Would we recommend it - yes definitely.
