Historic apartment by Castle on Lake Bracciano, easy access to Rome

Overview

Property

Updated: 11-Nov-2016
2 Bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, sleeps 4-6 people

Located in the 'centro storico' of the historically important town of Bracciano & adjacent to the 14th Century Castle Odelscalchi, the charming spacious 120 sq metre 'Casa la Castellana' occupies the entire floor of a small 14th Century building and has a private entrance onto a small, quiet piazza. We would like you to think of our apartment as your home away from home rather than a rental property. Our heart went into the restoration of our apartment. It features a large living-dining room with antique stone fireplace, beamed ceilings, and terracotta tiles, a dining table which seats 8 and a fully equipped blue/white tiled country kitchen. Each of two bedrooms has two twin beds and a view of the village below. There are two sofa beds in the living room.

From the apartment street door can be viewed the castle tower and the Duomo of Saint Steven. It's just 150 meters from the apartment down a short street to the main castle square with its shops and restauraants of all kinds. A colourful country market takes place on Wednesdays in the town centre.

Swimming & windsurfing on Lake Bracciano are a 20 minute walk away through the woods, and horseback riding, golfing, biking, & hiking in the countryside are close at hand (forest of Manziana 10 minutes by car).

Bracciano is an authentic, a very Italian town of historical importance in a beautiful country surrounding with the lake at the bottom of the hill and Rome at 'a stone's throw' so to speak. What could be more wonderful. It is not an overrun tourist resort.

The town atmosphere is unrushed, the townsfolk pause to chat on street corners, the local craftmen take pride in their work, the farmers bring their produce into the open air market under the castle moat, the shopkeepers know their customers on a first-name basis.

Bracciao has a healthy idyllic environment. The air is not polluted, the parking is not desperate. The bell inthe church tower marks the quarter hour.

But when it's big city action you seek, Rome (St Peters) is just down the track 55 minutes away by convenient commuter train which runs every 30 minutes.

Perfect Apartment

  • 5 of 5

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay in this lovely apartment! Linda, the owner, was very helpful. She arranged our arrival and departure connection from the airport and greeted us upon our arrival in Bracciano.

The apartment was beautiful, very clean and in a perfect location. The photos don't do it justice! The kitchen is small but adequate (who wants to cook on vacation!). Bracciano is such a charming and friendly town with good restaurants. The train station is only a 10 minute walk with easy access to Rome. We highly recommend this apartment.

Owner's Response: We thoroughly enjoyed having this lovely couple in our Bracciano place. They took very good care of our home and we are glad they took every opportunity to get to know the town folk and shop and restaurant owners. We would happily welcome them back.

Unique quirky ancient apartment with good access to town and beautiful lake

  • 4 of 5

The attractive property is at the top of a steep hill with free parking a few hundred metres away.

It is advertised with internet and air conditioning, true, but the internet was SIM based and rarely reliable. The air conditioning was one mobile unit of 5 kilowatts, barely adequate for the airspace to be cooled, but the fans and windows helped a lot.

The kitchen is hot and tiny and although equipped, could not easily cope with preparing a family meal for 6-8 persons.

The apartment is clean, comfortable and charming. Probably similar in age to the castle which it is opposite.

The owner is easily contacted by mobile phone, but the intermittent internet access was never resolved during our stay.

The position is central to town with easy access to shops and a little noisy. Bells ring on the hour and quarter hours all through the day and night. Night life is fun. On a warm summer evening people socialise throughout the town until 2.00 am. The surrounding area and the lake are charming with perfect opportunities for sunbathing and swimming within walking distance, up a hill.

Despite a few disappointments, I greatly enjoyed my holiday in this spacious apartment.

Owner's Response: Air temperature preferences are subjective, varying from individual to individual, from culture to culture, and by age, with Italians tending to make little use of air conditioning, Americans tending to run air conditioning full blast, and seniors generally requiring cooler air than others. The new 5 Kilowatt 17,000 BTU a/c in our apartment is a high tech efficient inverter water-to-air unit. To ensure the comfort of all future guests, an additional smaller a/c mobile unit will be made available. (Unfortunately town zoning does not permit for aesthetic reasons installation in the medieval quarter of wall a/c units with their outdoor components.) The local HiFi Center techie is working to improve the sim-based WiFi reliability. Hopefully the size of the kitchen is clearly indicated in the photos on the website. The guests tend to do little or no cooking while on holiday and infrequently number more than 4. (Incredulous as it may seem, a caterer once prepared a full 5 course dinner party for 20 persons in our tiny but equipped kitchen!!)

Bracciano, our home away from home.

  • 5 of 5

It is said you can never go back. For ten days at the beginning of October 2014 my husband, son and I did just that. We returned to 'our' beloved apartment in the historic section of Bracciano and experienced coming home in every way. Having spent 8 months here in '79-'80 and after I wrote about our adventures in a book, 'Letters from Italy', we were drawn back. The Lago, our friends and the people of this bustling town, the castle and the countryside were once again ours to enjoy from our windows and by stepping out our door. Bracciano is a special place and we relished every minute, in the numerous restaurants, bars, the daily Passegiata, the easy trips into Rome and the other lakeside villages. Coming back to número 18 Via della Collegiata every evening was the icing on our 10-day cake!

Wundervoll echtes Italien

  • 5 of 5

Thanks a lot, Linda!

Apartment was exactly as listed.

  • 4 of 5

We really enjoyed our stay at this apartment. Ideal location and 10 minutes walk from the train station. Easy access to Rome by train, one hour max. Apartment owner, Linda, was very helpful, friendly and could not have done any more to make sure was stay was enjoyable. The lake was about 20 minutes walk, be prepared for the hills on the walk back to the town. Lake very clean, ferry available to both surrounding villages on the lake. Overall, really enjoyed both the apartment and rural Italy, would recommend.
