About this property

Luxurious Retreat on the Wild Atlantic Way

To provide a safe stay for you and your family, we make sure our cleaning standards meet the current regulatory guidelines. We offer a contactless check in and check out service.

This thoughtfully designed house is perfectly suited to families and people who appreciate their personal space. We are a family of 5 and we feel very comfortable holidaying at Vaughan Cottage however it also easily accommodates larger groups and multi-generational families. The generously proportioned ground level layout is also popular with our infirm/less mobile guests.

**A YouTube video guide of Vaughan Cottage is available online**

My great grandfather, Padraig Vaughan, built the original Vaughan cottage which remains to this day in our family. The dwelling was newly renovated and extended in 2008. The house enjoys wonderful vistas of The Burren landscape and Newtown Castle.
Travel cots/Pack n Play/ Toys can be provided upon request. There is a wooden cot bed/infant bed positioned in the twin bedroom as we know this room is popular with younger family members.

If you require a housekeeper or cook during your stay, this can be arranged separately

The space
There are 5 spacious and well-appointed bedrooms, 4 large luxurious bathrooms, each with a separate shower and separate bath as well as ample communal spaces.

The large kitchen/diner has a ceiling open up all the way to the rafters and its central feature is a reclaimed Belfast brick chimney stack containing a modern range cooker.

Guest access

The property sits on a walled and gated plot of approx. 1 acre all in full access of the guests. Outside Seating provided.

Interaction with guests

We look forward to welcoming you to this special place and our family holiday home. My husband, children and I currently live overseas, however, we have support locally should you require assistance.

As we don't live at the house, it is generally not possible for me to be there when you arrive to welcome you in person but I shall leave keys and instructions on where everything is. Our housekeeper and maintenance man lives in the village and are happy to call by if you have any problems or need any information on the area or the house.

Getting around

We are situated in the perfect location for touring the Wild Atlantic Way. There is a bus service from the village of Ballyvaughan however to get the full sightseeing experience a car is essential. We have plenty of wonderful walks on our doorstep and bike rental can be arranged through the local bike rental shop. There is also a local taxi service.

Other things to note

Although the original old cottage was a much more modest dwelling, its occupants - the Vaughans, whose name is also synonymous with the village itself - were very friendly and welcoming.

The Vaughans were the first to introduce tourism to Ballyvaughan in the 1940s when Mr Rocks stayed here and built the new church altar. Mr Rocks' marble crafted altar is present in the Ballyvaughan church till this day. Vaughan cottage was just a fraction of its current size when he stayed there and the toilet was outside, but he enjoyed his stay with the Vaughans so much so that he went back to Dublin to tell his family and friends that they should all come to visit. As a result, the Rocks, the Walshes and the McConnells became regular guests at Vaughan cottage and so started the growth of tourism in the village.

My father Padraig, who was born and raised in the cottage, same as his mother before him, has very happy memories of an old gramophone playing on a stone wall outside as people danced Irish sets, sang and played music during his childhood - the original talent showcases before television took over. Passers-by were welcome to call in and nobody left the house hungry. Vaughan Cottage has always welcomed guests.

A lovely home for a family get together in a beautiful location
Vaughan cottage is a welcoming home in a beautiful location with easy access to the burren and the west coast. The house is very well equipped and all items were in good condition (e.g. knives were sharp). There are 3 large communal spaces (kitchen, living room upstairs and downstairs) so it was easy to entertain everyone. The bedrooms are also very generous and there are plenty of bathrooms. Parking is generous and the gate can be closed to keep children away from the main road. The washer and drier is great especially for the mixed weather in Co. Clare and with young children. Communication with Rebecca was friendly, helpful and speedy and the information pack she provided was very useful. Would happily stay there again if returning to the area.

Vaughan Cottage is a beautiful house with wonderful views in both the front and back.
We stayed at Vaughan Cottage for my entire four month sabbatical. We loved it. It is a welcoming house large, but homey. It is central to all things Co. Claire. About an hour to the airport in Shannon, 20 minutes to the Cliffs of Moher, a skip to the coast, and Coole Park etc. We stayed during the winter and were comfy and warm all season, one of the harshest in recent memory. We used the fireplace almost daily. I would recommend Vaughan Cottage to anyone visiting Ireland. There is room for several families or, just one (we did not use the second floor). Rachel is a wonderful landlord. She was very attentive. She is flexible, friendly and, most importantly, fair. Ballyvaughan is a wonderful town to live in with the Chocolate Factory and the Ice Cream Parlor for treats and wonderful restaurants like Monks, and Tea Houses. The best part of the area are the outdoor options for hiking, ocean, biking etc. After four months, I can honestly say that Vaughan Cottage was, for my family, a home away from home.

Beautiful place to stay
I have now spent two holidays (several weeks) in this house. The latest stay Christmas 2017. Not only did they have a tree set up and lights when we arrived they were also on hand with extra pots/pans needed for the Christmas dinner. There is not one thing I would not recommend with this holiday let. Probably one of the nicest places I have stayed in. Rachel is a lovely host and has a network of contacts if help is required. I cannot recommend this house highly enough and look forward to returning. Thanks again Rachel.... Pauline

Superb beautifully finished holiday home in a great location with masses of space inside and out.
We booked the property online for a five day stay with our family. We thought that the description of cottage meant we should expect a compact modern small house with just enough room for all of us and our baggage. When we arrived at the cottage for the first time and went inside we got the most delightful surprise. This house is so massive inside. The kitchen and living room areas are huge and bright with comfortable furniture all finished to a very high standard. All five bedrooms are likewise large with the three groundfloor ones all ensuite. With three daughters competing for bathroom space this was a godsend!(there was the usual fight for best bedroom, but it didn't matter too much because all the rooms were excellent with loads of space.anyway) The interior of the house was spotless when we arrived ,with everything laid out beautifully. We all felt right at home straight away and as it had started to rain outside and was a bit chilly we switched the heating on and a cosy fire lit.The house is very easy to heat and has a mixture of radiators and underfloor heating that worked well and very efficiently. The weather was mainly dry and warmer with sunny spells for the rest of our stay so we didn't need the heating so much after this. One of the best things about this house is its proximity to the amazing limestone Burren landscape. If you stand at the front of the house ,just 500 metres away in front of you is Cappanawalla mountain with its own castle at the base, and if you turn around and look over the massive back garden you can see Aillwee mountain on the other side of the Ballyvaughan valley. The sun rises behind this in the morning and lights up Capanawalla mountain. We climbed Capanawala on our first morning and had amazing views of the whole valley and Galway Bay to the North. The house is just one mile outside the beautiful coastal village of Ballyvaughan with its variety of great eating and drinking establishments. We would definitely recommend a visit to the tea rooms near the pier as well as Monks Pub close by which is well known as a great fish restaurant. If you ever want to see what a real Irish whiskey bar looks like ,then you should go no further than O Loughlins bar in the village. The house is perfectly placed not far from the junction of two main roads that take you south into the centre of the Burren . We all had the most relaxing fuss free week in Vaughan Cottage and would recommend it without hesitation..We will be back!

2024 Family Trip to Ireland
I truly cannot thank the host, Rachel, for all her care, time and planning with my family's trip to Ireland for the first time. The house is gorgeous, accommodating and cozy. Every detail that is advertised for this property is exactly correct even above and beyond what you would expect. We had a large group from ages 10-73 and we all loved our stay. I would like to kindly thank Rachel for everything she provided and did for us. I highly recommend this host and property.
