Superb old Catalan Country House situated in the village of Caixas and set in one of the most beautiful valleys of the Roussillon with views down to the sea and to hills. The house can actually accommodate a maximum of 11 but out of high season is available for groups of two plus. There is a south facing conservatory with seating for 11. The 12.5 x 4m pool is safely walled and secluded. Outdoor eating area with BBQ. For more details please contact me directly. .

The Mas (Country House) is one of a small cluster of buildings at the heart of the commune of Caixas. The church and the Mairie form the centre. Surrounding is the natural countryside of the region. Grass is a rarity here due to the general lack of rainfall so please do not anticipate lawns. The Mas however has a private area in which to dine outside and use the BBQ. The nearest village shops are at 10 minutes (bakery, butchers and general store) Otherwise the larger supermarkets are at Thuir - 20 minutes - please think about shopping before arrival or allow time although Supermarket shopping can be done on Sunday mornings.

House details : The Mas has some 225 sq m of habitable space with 6 bedrooms and 5 bathrooms, also the large sitting room and country type kitchen. There is a small terrace in front and a large gravelled area for eating outside with the BBQ.

The Mas was, for many years an internationally known Guest House and now provides comfortable accommodation with lots of character. The old house goes back some two hundred years or more and has the thick warm stone walls and beams that one associates with such properties.

The rooms are light and spacious with all double bedded rooms having French windows opening onto views. One has a small balcony with a view onto the valley below and another onto a large terrace that leads down to the pool. The property is set in open countryside in a valley that has become one of the most sought after places to acquire property for either retirement or holidays.

Lovely old Mas, spacious and full of character.

We have stayed at scores of holiday rentals around the world but I have to say that our short week at Mas St Jaques was probably one of the most ideal for us. Situated in a tiny hamlet in the foothills of the Pyrennees, although relatively remote it was a perfect base to explore the fascinating history; culture and scenery the area has to offer. A week allowed us to barely scrape the surface. The immediate area around Caixas is quite beautiful in itself and as keen walkers we were able to head out and walk in any direction from the house for endless hours of stunning views and to get a real flavour of old Catalonia.

The house is bursting with character and is absolutely huge. We found that it had just about everything to suit our needs. With six bedrooms and five bathrooms, most of them en suite, the house would be perfect for family or group holidays although the owner, Ian rented to myself and my wife and even allowed our two dogs. The spacious, clean and well equipped kitchen sits on the ground floor next to the old beamed original living area of the Mas. There is a large inside dining/summer room or an ouside dining area complete with BBQ's with ample room to seat more than a dozen people. Some quite steep stairs lead to bedrooms and suites on the first and second floors, each with it's own unique character and also on the second floor is the very large and airy sitting room. The bedroom we stayed in was on the second floor and has access to it's own terrace which in turn has stepped access to the pool area. The pool is one of the very few in the properties that we have stayed at that is comfortably usable. Ian has recently fitted heating and it is large enough to actually swim in.

Ian currently lives in seperate accommodation just outside the Mas and is available if you need help but discretely absent if you don't. He has renovated and developed the mas whilst living here for more than 20 years and is a fountain of knowledge on the local and wider area and the French way of life.

You might need to stock up in any one of the abundant supermarkets in nearby Thuir if you intend to self cater as there are only small grocery, bakers and butchers in the closest village ten minutes drive away but we didn''t find this a problem.

I would have no hesitation in recommending this property to any like minded traveller and hope to spend more time here in the future.

Lovely property away from it all

We have just returned from this lovely property set in the quiet Hamlet of Caixas; the house is very well equipped with a large swimming pool and plenty of sunbeds. It is the ideal property for a large group of friends or extended family; it's only downfall is that it is a little remote approximately 20mins fro the nearest Boulangerie in Fourcas and a further 10 to the nearest Supermarket in Thuir! However, we felt the positives far outweighed the negatives and would happily return again!

Superbe séjour.

Maison agréable et au calme. Nous avons bien profité des différents endroits de la maison, grande cuisine, salon (tv lecture- jeux de société), grande veranda pour les repas etc..

A noter que le propriétaire est disponible, agréable et très discret.

Chaleur et tranquillité dans un décor de rêve!

Très belle demeure dans un endroit magnifique et très calme. De la chambre du dernier étage, on peut voir la Méditerranée au loin. Endroit idéal pour le repos. Nous avons apprécié la belle grande piscine après les découvertes de la journée. Il était aussi très agréable de manger dans le petit jardin en regardant le spectacle aérien des escadrons d'hirondelles au-dessus de nos têtes. Les lits sont très confortables. Le propriétaire est charmant, disponible tout en étant très discret. Il y a quelques belles randonnées à faire dans les environs, mais le temps de transport pour se rendre au point de départ est parfois un peu long à cause des petites routes en lacet. La randonnée à partir de la mine de Batère est facile, avec un superbe point de vue sur les montagnes environnantes. Nous avons aussi aimé visiter le site des orgues à Ille sur Têt. Il y a du bon pain cuit au four à bois à la petite boulangerie de Fourques (10 minutes de route). Cette vaste maison est idéale pour les grandes familles ou les couples d'amis. Elle est aussi belle que sur les photos du site internet. Je recommanderais tout à fait cet endroit à mes amis et à ceux qui fuient les foules.

Appréciation Caixas

Rempart de la mairie et de l'Eglise de Caixas, le mas St Jacques a été facile à trouver. Nous l'avons trouvé impeccable, agrémenté de maintes attentions d'un propriétaire discret, décoré avec raffinement. Sa situation nous a permis de visiter les églises , cloîtres romans, palais des rois de Majorque sans compter la féria, le musée de Céret et la plage de Paulille aménagée magnifiquement par le conseil général. Nous avons profité de la piscine et de promenades à pied dans les environs

CAIXAS is situated in the foothills of the Pyrenees between the market towns of CERET and THUIR. The coastal resorts of COLLIOURE, ARGELES, PORT VENDRES and several others are some 40 minutes away. The valley of CAIXAS is a very sought after place to live and holiday in as it offers beautiful countryside, is close to the coast yet retains the peace of being slightly inland. There are many holiday activities around, as one would expect, but I personally recommend a visit to the outdoor thermal baths of St. THOMAS LES BAINS. This is a trip that would take in the fortified town of VILLEFRANCH DE CONFLENT: and end up in ANDORRA - don't miss the Little Yellow Train that goes over some of the most stupendous viaducts in France. Even allowing for the pull of the mountains it remains the coast that perhaps provides the biggest attractions and Aqualand and all other amenities are a short drive away. The selection is from long sandy beaches to smaller more intimate ones.

There is another double bedded room (Rossello) that has French windows leading down to a large terrace that then leads directly to the pool. Rossello also has a private bathroom. Conflent is a twin bedded room, with shower and toilet facilities. Fenolledes is a single bed room with a bath and toilet etc.

  • The large farmhouse kitchen is attached to one of the sitting areas. This leads directly to a large south facing conservatory with eating for up to 12 people. The kitchen is well equipped (I often cooked there for up to 16 people) with a double fanned electric oven and most gadgets for cooking. In front of the house is a terrace with a view to the valley a table and chairs. The approach to the pool offers a large BBQ area with outside tables and chairs for 12 people. There is a BBQ. The pool area is walled and private, and a veritable sun trap with loungers. The pool is reserved for the occupants of the Catalan Country House. NOTE!! --- there is an internet connection via a ETHERNET CABLE BUT this cannot be guaranteed due to frequent problems from France telecom and orange and is suitable only for emails and NOT for multiple users. ADD ELECTRICITY COSTS TO ALL RATES.
