Amazing Place
We have booked many an accommodation independently in our time, but this is the 1st time we have used homeaway, don’t know if we just fell lucky, but we would have to say this place now ranks in the top five places we have stayed and would like to thank Gabriella for such a wonderful place she has made to spend part of our holiday. Plenty of space within the accommodation and all the basics supplied, even fresh baked bread, the gardens and grounds were well looked after and enjoyed buy our Pug (carlino) for the time we spent there which on the face of it wasn’t long enough. The only critique we had was the shower could be a little temperamental, but that won’t stop us booking this accommodation next time we are in the area. Thank you again Gabriella and keep up the good work you are doing so more people can enjoy the castle.

A wonderful holiday stay
We had a memorable holiday in Casa Rambaldo, one of the best ever. Castello di Strassoldo is a truly atmospheric and idyllic place to stay and Gabriella is a very warm and welcoming host. The apartment has been beautifully converted, is comfortable and very well equipped should you wish to do a lot of cooking. Our private corner of the gardens was absolutely lovely, spacious and with mature trees and is a peaceful and relaxing place to unwind and to eat outside. We also enjoyed wandering in the castle grounds which are beautifully maintained. It is hard to imagine how it could be improved upon! There are lots of interesting places to visit in the area without driving very far. We stayed for 11 nights but there will be plenty of new places to explore when we return, which we hope to do in the near future.

About the host

Hosted by Gabriella W. di Strassoldo

Host profile image
Gabriella Williams di Strassoldo is the current owner of the castle of Strassoldo di Sopra.
Her mother inherited her family's estate in awful conditions in the Sixties. The place belongs the counts of Strassoldo since it was built more than a thousand years ago. Like her mother, Lella felt obliged to look after the complex and helped her mother as much as possible since she was very young, so the two of them alone dedicated their life to the maintenance and restoration of the castle.
They faced many difficulties, but year after year there were improvals and the complex has now acquired its ancient beauty.
The castle is formed by a central building and a series of houses once used for administrative and rural purposes, the whole is surrounded by centuries old gardens washed by spring water courses. Many parts of the complex were complete total ruins up to 20 years ago.
Gabriella grew up in Britain, Germany, Austria and Italy and speaks fluent English, French, German and Italian. She, therefore, brought her experience and different mentality to Friuli-Venezia Giulia, implementing many touristic activities that involved also other castles of the Region.
She organised many fund raising activities (exhibitions, visits, weddings, workshops, presentations, etc.) with the aim to carry out the heavy restoration works.
After renovating many parts of the main building of the castle and its garden, she bought back the Archives, which had been sold by her grandfather, in 2001, and immediately started restoring its ground floor and garden. In 2009 the the rice mill, which had partially collpased was also restored and turned into a bed and breakfast, with four double rooms, which are open from mid April to mid November.
In 2012 the guards' houses, which were ruins, were restored and turned into holiday homes. There are now three lovely self catering and independent Holiday homes, each with its own garden

Why they chose this property

Holiday in Strassoldo means feeling the flair of a castle that belongs to the family of the counts of Strassoldo since more than a thousand years and you can seen that the place has been lovingly restored in every detail.
The gardens are washed by spring water courses and are beautiful with many flowers and high trees.
It's a magical and quiet spot, although very central and ideal also to visit the whole Friuli-Venezia Giulia Region, have a swim in the Adriatic sea and drive to Veneto, Venice, Austria and Slovenia which are just around the corner.

What makes this property unique

Strassoldo offers a unique, relaxing and easy going atmosphere full of flair in contact with nature, history and beauty
