Overview

About the property

Perfect for that romantic getaway that you have been promising yourselves!

The Old Co-Op Barn newly converted in Dec 2016 oozes warmth, charm and eccentricities. Soon to be shown on Chanel 4 new renovation show “Big House Little House” 4pm on saturdays in April. See the renovation from the beginning of the project to the end!! We hope you like it, it was fun taking part.

The barn nestles in the lovely village of Brassington with 2 excellent pubs with exhilarating walks for you and your dog if you have one, right from the door step. The barn has all modern conveniences but also reclaimed wooden and slate floors, old beams and a hand made reclaimed upcycled kitchen made from pallets. Cuddle up on the quality sofa and the woodburner will make you feel at home and relaxed in no time. The Co-Op barn can be your romantic bolt hole or energetic sporting retreat.

Facilities

Wi fi and central heating is available throughout the barn

Bedrooms – both have full ensuite facilities, towels and all bed linen provided.

The upstairs room has a double bed and a luxurious double ended bath for your indulgence. All furniture is upcycled and renovated, we hope you enjoy it, we enjoyed making it especially the ladders !!

The downstairs bedroom has 2 full size single beds and has a large shower room. I hope you like the picnic blanket curtains (my idea) and the unusual lampshades (John’s idea)!!

We will provide a travel cot, stair gate and high chair when requested just let us know your little one’s needs.

Lounge and Dining room area

Curl up on the quality sofa and chairs in front of the woodburner. There is a TV, Hi Fi, many cds, videos and books for all age groups. The dining table and chairs seat 4 easily for your family meals. Please note the TV table was the old work bench in the barn before we started renovating it.

Kitchen

All modern facilities, dish washer, washing machine, microwave, cooker, fridge (but no freezer), all cutlery, crockery pots pans and all you need to cook with. We hope you enjoy the “potting shed” themed kitchen, made by John from reclaimed pallets and hand painted and waxed by Vanessa, it is truly unique. Even the old brass taps are upcyled and reclaimed.

Enjoy the old Co-Op Barn for its fantastic interior décor with lots of old agricultural features that will sure to get you inspired to start renovating and up-cycling in your own homes!

Parking is off road next to the barn and there is a local bus route in the village if wanted. The Old Gate Inn 5 minutes walk is 400 years old is stunning and does a good pint and meal.

The Barn cottage garden has decking and seating positioned to enjoy the views across the valley and up into the hills and dales beyond. There is also a picnic table and chairs for alfresco dining surrounded by flower boarders, stone walls and fencing making the garden a safe place for dogs and children. We have also attached 2 x D rings for you to lock up your bikes at night down by the back door. So, whether it is sitting out in the early morning with a cup of coffee watching the sun rise across the valley or watching the sun go down after a lovely day out in the fells whatever the reason we hope you love it as much as we do

Exploring the area

The walk over to Carsington village is just stunning with views over Carsington water and a pub to enjoy on your way. The Carsington water has a visitor centre and 8 miles to walk or bike around. Footpaths across hill and dale are everywhere and biking trails such as the High Peak is 10 mins bike away. Further afield are Ashbourne, Bakewell, Wirksworth and Cromford all worth exploring with great restaurants and shops. Come once and you will fall in love with Brassington and Derbyshire and end up living here like we have.

Hope to see you soon

Regards Vanessa and John.

About John & Vanessa Marriott

Welcome to Postcard Cottages, John and I (Vanessa) have taken (slightly) early retirement from our careers in Medical Sales and the Agricultural Supply Trade to live our dream by moving from Leicestershire to the beautiful hills and dales of Derbyshire. We started by coming on short holidays here over many years, just like you are thinking of doing and fell in love with the beautiful rolling green hillside, the limestone walls, numerous sheep, pretty villages and friendly folk. Watch out this area is addictive it could happen to you.

We now have 2 properties, the first we opened in 2015 No3 Club Cottage at Biggin by Hartington is a charming old limestone shepherd end of terrace and it captured our hearts as soon as we saw the stunning rolling views front and back and safe south facing enclosed gardens.

January 2017 sees the opening of “The Old Co-op Barn” Brassington our second property. This has been renovated over 14 weeks during Autumn 2016. The Old Co-op barn is so called because it used to store agricultural items for the old co-op store in the village and has been called the old co-op barn ever since when.

Channel 4 filmed us for a new renovation show called Big House Little House to be shown in April 4pm,Saturday. We hope you like it, it was good fun being filmed and there should be some funny moments, hopefully they will not be too rude about us!

Why John & Vanessa Marriott chose Brassington

The Barn is very special and everyone loves the unique character. You will see dustbin lids, potato baskets and ladders used as light fittings, old sacks, and picnic blankets for curtains. John made the kitchen from used pallets delivered to site during the renovations, Vanessa painted them to look like a garden potting shed. There are many more surprises, such as the double ended bath in the upstairs bedroom.

The main bedroom upstairs is a beautiful room with double aspect windows with filed views. The luxury double ended bath is just what you need for a long relaxing soak. As a special romantic touch the bath is at one end of the bedroom! There is an en-suite loo and washbasin tucked away off the main bedroom.

The twin-bedded room is on the ground floor with en suite large shower, toilet, and basin. With two full sized single beds and has relatively easy access to suit less able guests who find stairs a challenge. Also, ideal for children, friends, and relatives.

The fully equipped kitchen has everything you need to cook your own meals if you want to stay in. There is a full set of crockery, cutlery, and kitchen utensils to suit four guests plus plastic dishes and cups for one child. The kitchen has a full range of appliances; electric hob, full sized electric oven, microwave, fridge, dishwasher and washing machine.

Choose the Barn to enjoy home from home comforts blended with traditional style and exciting design. Enjoy your break and let your imagination go. You will get plenty of ideas to take home with you. Photos are free; help yourself!

Pets are welcome both in the barn and at The Olde Gate Inn is just a short stroll down the lane. It has open fires, great food, good beer, and a warm welcome.

Some practical stuff now: The Barn has free dedicated wi-fi and the broadband service is good. There is a colour flat screen tv with a free sat service and a dvd together with a collection of dvd’s. There is also a radio, cd player with a phone music connection.

What makes this cottage unique

The Co-op Barn offers you the perfect bolt hole for your holiday getaway. A unique blend of traditional style with all the home comforts for a cozy break. Special attention to detail by us means you don’t have to worry! We want you to have a great time here so have made an extra special effort to make everything perfect for you.

Come on in and take a look…

Notes:
The Barn lies at the west end of the village of Brassington nestled in a small group of cottages possibly a hamlet of its own many years ago. Brassington was a limestone mining village hence the numerous quaint small cottages and barns scattered around the narrow lanes and byways across the village. Enjoy walking around the lanes and looking at the stone walls and cottage gardens mostly leading down to the 17th century Pub. The whole village was built on a south facing slope giving it sunshine the whole day through and protecting it from northerly weather up and over the hill behind it. There are lovely walks and bike trails up and over the surrounding hills just waiting to be explored

Absolutely stunning property, very quirky but most if all cosy and homely for a Christmas break.

  • 5 of 5

Property is very well presented, quirky without being impracticable. The whole property has a luxurious feel but very cosy and homely. There is everything you need for a short break for a family of four. I particularly liked the free standing bath and log burner, perfect for a Christmas family break. Owners of the property live close by and gave us a friendly welcome when we arrived and we're on hand if we had any queries or problems. My family and I thoroughly enjoyed our stay and will definitely be booking again next year.

Second stay and loved it just as much the moment I stepped through the door.

  • 5 of 5

Just my ticket; homely, quirky and a thoughtful barn conversion using many old materials found in the Old Co-op Barn. I stayed with two grandsons aged 8 and 5 who wanted to stay longer. We went to Chatsworth House Farmyard and playground for £22 followed by hot chocolate at Chatsworth's farmshop. Grandchildren also got me down and up 294 steps at the Blue John Cavern! I have already planned my next stay.
