Dalkey, County Dublin
Dalkey heritage town a popular location, both as a place to live and as a tourist destination.
It has a real village feel and is just half an hour by train or road south of the capital city.

WHY IS DALKEY SO POPULAR?
For a start it has an ancient, rich and varied history. It rose to prominence through great surges of activity and rested as a sleepy fishing village in the intervening times.

It grew from early settlers on Dalkey Island when the surrounding area was covered in forests and the only pathways were along the rivers and coastlines.

We know that both Dalkey Island and Dalkey mainland became places of early Christian ecclesiastical importance with their two churches dedicated to St Begnet as pilgrims made their way to Glendalough.

We have evidence of the Vikings making the island their base to trade slaves from.

We know Dalkey served as the port for Dublin in medieval times, with the large ships at anchor in Dalkey Sound. Dalkey declined and languished peacefully until the great sea tragedies of 1807 led to great activity in the Quarry for the building of Dun Laoghaire Harbour. When the railways came in 1830s & 1840s some of the fine houses we know today were built.

Today there is welcoming local community and the area is home to many creative artists such as writers, musicians, film directors and rock stars. This tradition goes back John Dowland the famous musician who was associated with the area in the 1600s. He was known in all the courts of Europe, the Bono of his day! Today many creative people live quite unobtrusively among the local community who are proud of their rich ancestral heritage and welcome the visitor to share the ancient history of their home town.

Delight in Dalkey
This lovely property is like the Tardis: the small, unassuming exterior belies the spacious loveliness within. We stayed for ten days and were bowled over with how comfortable, well-furnished and homely it was. The kitchen/dining area is probably the pièce de resistance: big, bright and airy and leading to a wonderful terraced garden. This was our favourite ever Airbnb property and we feel very lucky to have found it. Although we did not meet the owner, Judy, she had left us a lovely welcome card, fresh flowers and two chocolate rabbits (we stayed over Easter.) Her proxy, Gill, was friendly and helpful when we met the next morning. The DART station is two minutes walk as is the town. Finnegan’s Pub is within spitting distance. If only all Airbnbs were like this

A very comfortable , well equipped house in an excellent location . All needs were catered for .
We really enjoyed our stay in Dalkey . The location of the house was ideal , so many cafes , restaurants and facilities only a short walk away . The house is very nicely furnished and presented , with everything you could need for a two week stay .It is big enough for four people so we could relax in privacy . There was a large amount of written material , brochures , local information and other helpful comments . And a very generous , warm welcome ! We felt very much at home and would happily recommend it as a lovely place to stay .

Wonderful holiday in this beautiful house
We absolutely loved our stay! The house is spacious, comfortable and stunning. The location is perfect. We had such a great time and could enjoy the pretty garden because of the great weather we had. Our host even left a bottle of wine for us to enjoy! Thank you, we loved our week!

Great for city and sea walks
The house lived up to our expectations. We immediately felt at home because it is full of light and very friendly and it has got all the facilities you need on a holiday. Unfortunately we couldn't sit in the lovely garden because it was too cold. Public transport is very near and frequent into Dublin and to the airport so it is very suitable for people without a car. There are also shops close by and it is only five minutes walk to Colliemore harbour where there are beautiful views to Dalkey island. It is a great place to combine the bustle of the city with peaceful village living and sea walks.
