Overview

About the property

Spacious 4 bedroom [1 a seperate suite] Cottage in a perfect Somerset Village.

The Barton in Shipham village is a lovely 3-storey cottage nestling next to the village green. The Mendip Hills are close by. Across The Green you have the local, traditional butchers/store/newsagent famous for excellent steaks etc and you have The Penscott Inn with a friendly atmosphere and heaps of character on your doorstep.

Attention to detail is in plentiful supply at The Barton. The owners have over 10 years experience in the rental industry and ensure that every room looks and feels luxuriously comfortable and cosy, but at the same time interesting. This is achieved by using antique pieces along with many modern touches,so when you stay you feel you could be staying at the home of a good friend whose main aim is to ensure your comfort and happiness.

The cottage was originally thatched and its original character remains with different floor levels and a quirky top floor suite with it's own door and staircase.Up here you will find an antique bed, beautiful views up to the rolling hills,a large dressing room with a cot for your little one to sleep in comfort near you if you need that facility and a fresh ensuite shower room.

On the second floor you have another double bedroom with a French, carved antique wooden bed with pretty views across to the church and a large wardrobe and desk/dressing table area. This also has a gleaming ensuite/shower room.

Along the landing you find another double bedroom with built in wardrobe and a single room with a small wooden desk and chair.

The large, light family bathroom is on this floor with bath and shower.

On the ground floor is a very large lounge and office area.

There is round breakfast table in here if you are a smaller party or would prefer a cosier setting for a meal.

The furniture includes a beautiful dresser originally made in the local city of Bristol. There are 2 small settees and an armchair and rocking chair for your comfortable nights in.

A herringbone floor completes the look with rugs and a white stone fireplace with a coal effect fire for extra cosiness on cooler nights.

Stone steps lead down to a fantastic kitchen dining area. The kitchen has been designed with a shaker theme and its grey cupboard doors and enamel handles complete the look. Lots of space here and a fabulous cream range cooker should you decide to entertain at home. An integrated fridge and freezer and a dishwasher are all here concealed behind the wooden doors.

Then a linen cupboard for the washing machine/ tumble dryer should you need to launder during your stay.

Eating at the long wooden kitchen table will always be a pleasure and of course extra touches are supplied to beautify the table should you wish to have a dinner party. The table can seat up to 10 people.

Outside there is parking for 2 cars and more spaces can easily be found near the green should there be more spaces required.

A pretty patio area overlooks the village green if you want to sit and have glass of wine and watch village life in this adorable village.

Should you need a new novel...the 'novel'ty in Shipham is the traditional red telephone box now full of books...what could be better?!

There is also a bus service from the village with routes to Cheddar,Wedmore,Glastonbury,Axbridge and Street. So you can hop on and shop in Street until your heart's content and then return to The Barton for tea and all you have to do is cross The Green!

The village is a hub of local activity and art shows and live music are very much on the menu at the local Village Hall.

The Parish Church was built in 1843 on the site of a smaller mediaeval church. It has an octagonal castellated bell tower housing 6 bells. The church is Grade-2 listed and well worth a visit.

If you love coffee and cake...and who doesn't?...then you will find Lenny's Coffee Shop. This is now probably the smallest coffee shop in Britain and the scrummy cakes are all made by members of the local church. All profits go to charity and it is a great place for a natter with the locals and for elevenses.

It is set in an ideal location for exploring the Somerset countryside and the brilliant coastal resorts of Burnham-On-Sea and Weston Super Mare.It is a year round location with many beautiful local walks or an easy drive to the fantastic City of Bristol reached within half an hour by car.

The 9th guest who can stay would be a little one who can still sleep in a cot. A highchair and extra put up bed are available if requested @ £25 each per stay.

There is a large screen TV with Freeview,DVD and WIFI.

There is gas central heating throughout the property and the extra gas fire in the living room.

At the entrance is a boot room for any wellies or walking boots.

The cottage is supplied with fluffy towels and fresh bedlinen in keeping with the cottage feel and if you stay for longer than a week there will be a free mini clean with a change of linens.

Sorry this is a Non-Smoking property. Welcome to smoke outside of course.

About Amanda

We are a local couple who brought out two children up in the local area.

We live in the next village to Shipham which is Winscombe and we are all very fond of this beautiful part of North Somerset. Our daughter and her husband have built a house locally and live there with our first Grandchild,so we are lucky to have them so close. Our son lives in Bristol and we love visiting him in this brilliant city.

We have been renovating and renting property for many, many years and The Barton was a big challenge as it needed a lot of TLC and hard work when we purchased it.

We like to allow properties to retain their character and try to keep as many features as we can within the property. This was originally a thatched cottage and has a great location in the centre of a typical village in Somerset...small but with a big heart.

We like to add interesting objects/paintings/details to our rental properties such as the beautiful dresser in the lounge which was originally made in Bristol.

It is very important to us that our guests feel special and comfortable when they stay and we are sure your stay at The Barton will be a memorable one.

The biggest compliment is of course when our guests return and with the property we have in Spain they return again and again. [See 8037571 and 8048762] This is a newer project for us and we look forward to having many happy guests stay at The Barton.

Why Amanda chose Somerset

The setting is straight out of an Enid Blyton novel. A traditional cottage offering you space and yet maintaining the quaintness of its original building.

It has a uniqueness because pieces of furniture and other adornments have been chosen with care and to maintain a link to the past.

The 3 double beds are full of character and workmanship that you do not often see today in rental properties. They are all unique. That is just one example of the delights you will find within The Barton.

All this and then the lovely village of Shipham where the community vibe is strong and very important, from the village shop/butcher to the hall where plays are put on and events take place often.

Come and escape there and we are sure you will fall in love with the beautiful area and all it has to offer.

What makes this cottage unique

The Barton is perfect for a group of friends or extended family members wishing to stay together.

It is a large cottage, so lots of space and yet has the bonus of the 'banquet' table where 10 people could sit comfortably and share a meal and good company.

The village of Shipham will give you a taste of a perfect Somerset location as it has all the underlying features you would look for...a pub over the road,a shop with an excellent butcher and home made cakes,a cafe with treats baked by the local community in support of the church and a busy timetable at the Community Centre where you can join in if you wish.

Also, you will be surrounded by well known places of interest which are very easily accessible by car and on foot. Enjoy!.......

Notes:
Your stay at this quaint cottage will give you a taste of being in a quintessential Somerset village. You can pop over the road for your provisions and your paper and even a free range chicken for your dinner. Visit the [very] local Public House and tiny cafe and have a gossip with the locals who will tell you what's on next in the village hall. Then, of course, you have all the surrounding villages and towns to try and visit, such as Cheddar with its' famous caves and gorge or Wells with its beautiful cathedral and architecture. Ride on the donkeys at Weston Super Mare or visit the cities of Bath and Bristol, both stuffed to the gunnels with history and sights. Best of all though, you will be staying in luxury in a place where small details have been thought about and chosen and displayed and placed especially for you to enjoy. We have been renting property now for over 10 years and this is our new 'baby', so hopefully now everything should be perfect for your stay at The Barton.

A wonderful cottage holiday

  • 5 of 5

Stayed for a week at this beautiful cottage in Shipham. Facilities were first rate, with everything you could need in a home away from home. Lovely friendly pub and shop just across the road, plenty of space for everyone, comfy beds and heavenly showers. Three miles from Cheddar Gorge and not much further to Wells. Close enough to Bristol for visits to the city. What more can I say? Perfect!!

Clean, comfortable and a great location

  • 4 of 5

The cottage is in a great location, not far from the seaside, or the caves. There are lots to do in the surrounding area.

The cottage itself is spacious and comfortable, and only thing missing to make it perfect was an outside area for us all to sit.

great property for a somerset stay

  • 4 of 5

The standard of the property is great with everything you need provided. The decor is eclectic but done thoughtfully so it works. Close to everywhere we wanted to visit, each day was relaxing with little driving required. Our only complaint was the proximity to quite a busy road as we all live in quiet areas and are not used to this at night. That said we all slept well enough even with the windows open. Great stay!

Owner's Response: Hi there and thank you so much for reviewing your stay. So glad you enjoyed the cottage and as you stay the location really is so convenient for all the fabulous locations to visit in the North Somerset area. I suppose the advantages of the location as not in the middle of nowhere, you have the bonus of the local shop and pub over the road. Thats what we particularly like. Thanks again and best wishes Amanda.

It's a winner for us!

  • 5 of 5

If you want a cottage in the middle of nowhere with no traffic noise, this isn't for you, as the road that runs through Shipham to Cheddar is quite a busy one at times. But if you want a cottage that has a lovely ambience, comfy beds and sofas, is impeccably clean, has an excellently appointed kitchen (we love to cook, and mean things like colanders, serving dishes, jugs, graters, tupperware, etc etc) fabulously gushing showers, a delightful community shop just over the road, with a friendly pub providing real ale and good grub a stone's throw away, then get booking! It's 5* from us!

Owner's Response: Hi there and can I say a huge Thank You for your glowing review about The Barton. We have set the cottage up in Shipham with a lot of attention to small details as we want guests to feel totally at home and comfortable. We have also tried to retain an eclectic feel there with lots of period items of furniture that you would not have at home, but which are so interesting in this setting. Mixing the old and the new can work if the bathrooms and kitchen are modern and fitted to a high standard, so glad this worked for you! Would love to have you back and thanks again for leaving everything in such excellent order. Amanda.

Wonderful cottage in a great location

  • 5 of 5

Six adults and two children spent a wonderful few days at the cottage. There was an obvious attention to detail with the decoration and all rooms are beautifully presented. The cottage is located next to a very friendly pub and local store which we visited daily. It is located only a short drive from many tourist locations in each direction which makes it a very useful place to stay.

The only thing I would suggest is a welcome/guest book - it would have been nice to read about activity suggestions or hidden gems.

Owner's Response: Hi there Adam and thank you so much for the brilliant review. It makes all the hard work of sourcing the furniture and decor to match the era of the cottage worthwhile. Yes, Shipham is a great village to stay in to explore the local area. Sorry about the lack of a book, but I had put all the information on the links to the cottage on the website and had hoped that this was automatically provided to my guests, so I will check that this information is easily accessible to clients who have made a booking. Thanks for the tip. Hope to see you again.

Great location but cottage is a bit tired

  • 3 of 5

We had an amazing time during our time at Shipham, loads to do in the area and the property was big enough for our large family group. Lovely walks right on the doorstep, a charity café on afternoons run for BHF and a local friendly pub just over the road. I can't say anything against the location.Cheddar Gorge just a couple of miles away, Wells, Wookie Hole and the seaside all within a short drive.

My only comments would be with the property itself. The size of the property is great for a large group, though lacking in outside space (don't plan to have a BBQ as there is no garden). The kitchen was well equipped and we cook most nights we stayed for the week. There is a big range to cook on and that was great when cooking for everyone on an evening. Not sure if we were the first guest for a while but the cottage did smell quite musty when we first got there and needed a good airing out. The bed in the small double room is extremely uncomfortable and squeaked all night long. Other beds in the property faired better and offered a better nights sleep for the others in the party. Bathrooms were all great and there always seemed plenty of hot water.

Overall a great holiday was had, mainly because we were spoiled with choice of things to do and the weather was amazing the week we went. The cottage could do with an update in the living room and bedrooms but was fine for us as we were out most of the time.

Owner's Response: Hi there Adam, so glad that you and your party enjoyed the stay in our cottage. It would seem that the eclectic decor was not perhaps to your taste. Having a lot of interior design experience with many different properties - in the cottage we have antique beds and furniture. All our previous guests have enjoyed the experience with the unique interior which we feel really suits the age of the cottage. We try to steer clear of simply filling a rental property with everything from a trolley from Ikea. We will take on board that some guests may prefer a new divan to a French bed of course.
