Albatros is a stylish and thoughtfully designed family home set in its own gardens with good sized private pool, just 2 mins walk from the nearest clear water cove.

The bedrooms are all comfortable with plenty of cupboard space and each of the 4 bathrooms have showers - plus there's an additional shower poolside.

There are a number of seating and dining areas inside and out - fully shaded and part shaded - for relaxing and dining with plenty of additional chairs (and tables) available to those shown in the photos.

The main house kitchen is fully stocked with all the utensils and numbers of crockery/cutlery sets you would find in any sizeable family home. There is also a large American double door fridge/freezer, 4 ring gas hob with extractor, fan oven and microwave.

Particularly useful is the self-contained 2 double bedroom garden apartment with its own kitchen and TV/DVD/games/living space, offering optimum flexibility and privacy.

In addition, there's table tennis in outside covered area.

All bed linen is 100% cotton and bath towels are provided for all guests. Pre- and post-stay house cleaning is included in the cost of hire, as is pool cleaning and garden maintenance twice a week. Every 7 days, the house is cleaned and bed linen changed. Additional mid-stay cleans and changes of bed linen are charged additionally and available on request from the property manager on arrival.

The house is laid over 3 floors. On the first floor is the large master bedroom suite with terrace overlooking Cabo de Palos and the Mediterranean. On the ground floor is the large farmhouse kitchen, TV/DVD viewing area and large dining and living areas. In addition, there are 3 bedrooms on this floor: the four poster double bedroom and 2 twin bedrooms and 2 family bathrooms - renovated spring 2018. On the lower-ground floor is the garden apartment with kitchen and living area, 2 double bedrooms (one with kingsize bed) and beautifully renovated wet room. This is perfect for a couple with 2 or 3 small children as there is space for the additional put-up bed available and you cannot be heard from the main house! Alternatively, for members of the group who prefer a little respite from the energy of the rest of the party, this can prove to be a very welcome getaway.

There is air-conditioning in all bedrooms as well as ceiling fans - whichever you prefer to use. (Air-conditioning units are covered to protect them from the salty sea air during the cooler months of the year and therefore only in use during July/Aug/Sept).

Outside, by the pool is a semi-shaded relaxing area with coffee table as well as a fully covered area for dining al fresco without over-heating. There are other table and chair areas around the garden for relaxing at different times of the day, as the sun moves from east to west. The pool is to the east/south side of the house so benefits from sun up to about 6pm. The pool is not heated and hits swimming temperatures from mid-May to mid-October. The rest of the year it is covered for protection.

There is plenty of parking outside the house and don't be surprised if once you arrived, you don't set foot in the car again until you leave... there is so much to do and all services - groceries, bank, chemist, restaurants, etc - are within walking distance of the villa.

There is a large, cleverly disguised, area outside for hanging wet clothes and a utility room with Bosch washing machine and condenser dryer (should you need it).

About Lindsay Whitmore

We lived in the villa for 2 years before moving back to the UK at the end of 2017. The house was therefore our home and benefits from the love and time spent on and in it during this period.

We made many friends here and our youngest is fluent in Spanish and very handy at tennis and rock jumping in the sea! It was an incredible 2 year adventure that we celebrate every time we come back here.

The villa comes into its own when entertaining friends and family and we enjoy it just as much when we are on holiday now, too!

We moved to Cabo de Palos from Somerset early 2015. We now reside in Bath and have a student let business which keeps me busy whilst Andrew focuses on a new start up and matters of local government. Andrew and I first met at Durham University many years ago and we have 2 children, one fully grown and the other in secondary education.

We are all sport lovers and our youngest plays tennis to a high level so we have been visiting this part of Spain for a number of years and know it well.

About the photo: this family selfie (me in the middle) was taken on Christmas Eve 2015 before we walked to the Barra, Cabo de Palos for an al fresco lunch by the sea. It was a glorious day.

Why Lindsay Whitmore chose Cartagena

We chose this villa because of its charm, perfect room layout, large open plan living/dining area in the main house, separate garden apartment, 10m x 5m pool, well planted garden and proximity to the sea - on all sides. It ticked a lot of boxes!!

We have not been disappointed with our purchase having loved every minute of every day that we have lived here.

Before moving in, we did some much needed maintenance work (masonry repair, painting, updating lighting and appliances, etc) and have added a few mod-cons like ceiling fans and air conditioning - essential for us Northern Europeans - but little else, as it all functions extremely well. We continue to maintain as well as upgrade the house all the time - listening to guest feedback and carrying out recommendations where we can. Ready for summer 2018 we installed a new entry gate to provide additional privacy for guests; increased the comfy pool side seating area; and installed an automatic pool light function so that guests can enjoy 2 hours of ambient pool light every evening whilst dining - without having to worry about how to turn them on and off!

We have also done some much needed tree pruning, fence repair after the heavy winds this winter and renovated to a high standard 3 of the bathrooms.

The villa has a wonderfully friendly and homely feel about it, which I have found to be an unusual discovery in many Mediterranean villas and we hope you'll love it as much as we do.

It’s was a stunning house, in a beautiful place, couldn’t ask for more.

We arrived in Murcia airport and it’s was a 20 very easy drive to the house. On arrival to the house the house manager met us there (very kind man). Showed us around the beautiful house. There was plenty of bed rooms/ bathrooms for friends and family. The down stairs anax where stunning, bed where so comfy. Kitchen had everything we needed to cook from BBQs, big dishes and easy breakfasts.

The swimming pool was perfect temperature, seating out side was comfy and also perfect to sit down to socialise.

The house has a small stone beach walking distance, harbour with lots of restaurants and a big sandy beach where the sea is stunning.

The house was a 5 minute drive from anything we wanted to do.

Was best holiday I’ve had,would recommend to anyone that wanted a relaxing or active holiday.

Fantastic 2 week family holiday

First impressions, relatively private with great indoor and outdoor space situated in a quiet suburb of the town. On arrival we were met by the villa representative, Hristo, who talked us through the do's and dont's, and left us a small welcome pack, he attended the villa regularly throughout our stay to clean the pool and check that all was OK. The property both inside and out was immaculately clean with a great family size swimming pool, sunbathing, shaded, seating and eating areas scattered around the property.

The property was like a home from home and if like us, a large family group, the kitchen was well used and contained everything from a garlic press to a dishwasher. Indoor family table for afternoon meals and an outside family table for late evening suppers.

All the bedrooms were very clean, air conditioned with adequate storage space.

The villa does need some maintenance issues addressed, the owner has advised these are to be undertaken after this season. However my rating still remains 5* as these little issues do not impact on our stay.

Closest supermarket is only 10mins walk and the nicest restaurants which we found on the far side of the harbour was 20mins walk, however there are closer ones if you do not want to walk as far.

Owner's Response: Thank you for your kind review. We very much appreciate the time taken and your honest opinions and feedback. Together with some minor maintenance issues and additions (including replacing some of the older blinds and mosquito screens, adding an automatic pool lights timer for after dark and enabling parking within the property) we are continuing with our ongoing upgrade program. Not everything we want to do can be done at once but we are delighted that guests appreciate how we have prioritised works so far - eg, the adding of air conditioning units, fully equipped kitchen, Nespresso coffee maching, 100% cotton bed linen, quality mattresses - to ensure enjoyment is optimised at all times. In addition, cleanliness and service are key in our book and we are lucky to have such attentive people to help. (Hristo was delighted to be singled out for comment :)). Whilst we are yet to confirm all the upgrades for next year, we will be putting in a new, taller pedestrian entry gate for added privacy and enabling off-road parking for 1 car.

Cabo de Palos will suit just about anyone. There is plenty to do if you want to be active and a host of wonderful scenic places if you want to chill by the sea.

Cabo de Palos is an old fishing village/port and boasts the largest number of sub-aqua diving clubs and schools of anywhere in Europe. From beginners to experts, the wreck diving in this part of the Mediterranean is second to none. For snorkel enthusiasts, the many coves, some within walking distance of the villa, feature plentiful fish species and rock formations that will keep you occupied for hours.

Cabo de Palos and Cala Flores together feature 7 coves ideal for snorkelling and sunbathing, whilst Playa Levante on the west side of the cape, is for those who crave long sweeping sandy beaches. Either way, if there's a breeze blowing you can choose to enjoy the cooling gusts and waves it creates or visit the other side of the cape and stay protected.

The MDZ Tennis Academy is just up the road in Mar de Cristal on the Mar Menor, for children's tennis courses, adult coaching, elite squads and there are a number of Padel courts as well you can book yourself or get some coaching.

There is a bike hire shop in La Manga and the La Manga Club where you can join organised rides around the area. Horse riding, yacht charter, one off sailing trips, paddle board hire, windsurf hire - it's all available and full information will be provided on arrival.

You can walk to a number of excellent restaurants and beach 'chiringuitos' with enough quality and vairiety that you don't have to visit the same place twice in a week - unless you choose to. Fresh fish, tapas, freidurias, pasta, paella, Eastern fusion and Argentinian dishes all on your doorstep.

Also in the centre of Cabo de Palos are some lovely fashion boutiques and well worth a visit are the large ceramic warehouse on the way to the Mercadona supermarket and the exceptional jamoneria, on the side road by Caja Mar bank. Both within 10 mins walk from the villa.

The Sunday market from 8.30am - 2pm is highly popular and full of energy. Beware though that in the summer months it gets very hot very quickly, so do go early. This is easily managed when all you have to do is take a 10 minute stroll to enjoy the huge number of stalls selling a variety of items from fresh fruit and vegetables and other local produce to clothes, leather goods, jewellery, homeware, ceramics.

If you've some children (or petrol heads) in your group, then there's the nearby go-kart track and Peke Park in La Manga, which is just perfect for children up to the age of 14, featuring large trampolines, bungees, merry-go-round, small dodgems, rides and mini-golf.

On the other side of Cabo de Palos and within an hour's hike are the beautiful, unspoiled beaches of Calblanque National Park. Alternatively, take the car and it'll take you about 15 mins. Some of the roads as you near the beaches are little more than tracks but easily driveable. In the summer months, the council operates a 10 Euro pp park and ride, which can involve upto a 25 minute wait, so do make sure you remember to take all necessary refreshments, sun shades and sun creams with you.

For the young and young at heart, don't miss out on Trips nightclub with its live music, DJs and events. You won't even have to worry about taxis as it's just a 10 minute early morning stumble from the villa.

The nearest city, Cartagena, is 20 mins by car and the closest shopping mall, Espacio Mediterraneo, is 15 mins. Cartagena is the ancient city and sea port of Carthage with many Roman architectural ruins including a well preserved ampitheatre and still active commercial port. The city boasts many excellent restaurants, a very attractive old town centre and the popular sub-aqua museum.

The famous La Manga Club is 15mins drive from the villa and the geographic phenomenon, the Mar Menor, Europe's largest natural lagoon is easily accessible on the other side of the La Manga strip.
