About John Cook and Jean-Maurice Siu

Originally from the UK, John studied design at the North London School of Architecture and Design in the late 1990’s. He worked as the interior designer for a private Architectural practice in Mayfair for 9 years before moving to the Languedoc region of France where he created The Village House interior design business.

Jean-Maurice originates from New Caledonia but moved to Paris in 1988 before both he and John relocated to southern France in 2004 to renovate and create their home and business.

John Cook and Jean-Maurice Siu purchased this house in 2010

Why John Cook and Jean-Maurice Siu chose Gabian

We found our home and christened it The Village House by setting up a small bed and breakfast business as well as our interior design business. Over the years here we have acquired the properties next door and opposite and fully renovated and refurbished them to create our two letting properties. Hopefully you will be able to experience the real french life as we do by staying in one of them !

What makes this house unique

Gabian is a charming, rural village, surrounded by vineyards, winemaking is very important here. We love the coutryside, relaxed lifestyle and of course the climate.

Guestbook comments from the owner

From the moment we pulled up in the car we knew we had chosen well. We were greeted by our wonderful hosts and shown the house - and what a house it is. Lovingly restored with a beautiful sense of style, function and attention to detail. It really was a 'home from home'. The village of Gabian is what you would expect from a sleepy French village in the heart of the Languedoc (including the obligatory Boulangerie plus a travelling Pizza-van on Thursday evenings). 30 minutes inland we found ourselves sunbathing and swimming in the stunning Gorge d'Heric and 30 minutes the other way on one of the many south coast beaches the area has to offer. We would thoroughly recommend a trip to Montpellier which was a relaxed 1 hour drive away (park at Ikea and take the tram - a top tip from our hosts!). If you are looking for a property with an outside space/terrace then maybe this isn't the one for you, that said we spent a very enjoyable evening with our hosts on their terrace next-door. All in all the perfect end to our holiday across France.

Surrounded by vineyards, garrigue and sunshine in the historic heart of of Gabian, a wine making village near Pézenas. Close by are Beziers, Montpellier, Agde and the Mediterranean coastline.

Near Pezenas in the South of France, Gabian sits at the foothills of the high Languedoc Natural park. A charming and rustic village, Gabian is at the meeting point of two rivers, surrounded by vineyards and the open countryside of the garrigue. The Chateau de Cassan, a classified historical monument sits on a hill overlooking the village.

With its natural spring water fountains Gabian is both a picturesque and a lively working village with 2 bars, a grocery, post office, baker, pharmacy and a weekly market. The Village House in Gabian makes an ideal base for enjoying the many and varied surrounding sites and activities. For swimming, either the local lakes and gorges, local swimming pools or of course the Mediterranean.

Within easy reach are the High Languedoc Natural Park; fine sand beaches of the Mediterranean, some tourist resorts others completely undeveloped; historic artisan towns such as Pezenas and the cosmopolitan city of Montpellier.

The region encompasses a large variety of landscapes, from the Pyrenees in the west, through vineyards and the garrigue to the expanse of the mediterranean coastline and Provence and the camargue in the east. The landscape and climate make this the largest wine producing area in France.

There are so many places to visit such as the Canal du Midi, the ancient ports of Agde, Sete, Meze or Marseillan, the historic city of Nimes and World Heritage site of the Pont du Gard, the fortified cities of Carcassonne or Aigues-Mortes or picturesque sites like St Guilhem le Desert.

With easy and quick access to airports, railway and autoroutes, Gabian is the perfect location for a visit in any season.
