Overview

About the property

4 bedroom chalet, sleeps 8+2. Brand new kitchen. Amazing views. Garage parking.

We fell in love with this beautiful, spacious, light 30 year old chalet, and bought it in May 2016. The position is perfect being a very short walk from all that Samoens village has to offer, but being very quietly positioned at the end of a no-through road.

We have completely refurbished the kitchen, fitted underfloor heating on the ground floor and replaced the roof so that it is now highly insulated with new triple-glazed velux windows.

The open-plan living area consists of a roomy kitchen with views of the famous Criou to the east and a meadow to the north, filled with wild flowers in the spring and summer, a dining area overlooking the south-facing patio with views of the mountains towards the ski area and a cosy but spacious sitting room with the original open fire.

The kitchen is well-equipped (the owners like to cook!), with an oven, separate microwave, induction hob, dishwasher, Lavazza coffee maker, toaster and many pots and pans!

In the sitting room the TV has British Freesat and French channels and there is fast free wifi accessible throughout the house.

The downstairs area also has a roomy hallway with coat hanging and shoe rack space, and access to separate toilet. In addition there is a spacious double bedroom with mountain views and an ensuite shower room with sink.

Upstairs 2 enormous double bedrooms with great storage space open onto a charming south facing balcony. In addition to the king sized double beds in each room there are two single futons which can by placed in either room to provide additional sleeping for two adults or children.

There is a cosy smaller 4th bedroom with two slightly narrow full length single beds (separated bunk beds) ideal for children but suitable for adults.

The spacious upstairs family bathroom has the original 1980s bathroom suite, with a large bath and separate shower. There is a washing machine in a cupboard off this bathroom.

Outside there is a large patio which extends from the kitchen, facing east to catch the sunrise and morning sun, wrapping round to the front of the house and facing southwest with mountain views and amazing sunsets. The patio table can seat up to 10 - you might be able to grab a bit of lunch here on a sunny winter's day and you will want to eat every meal here during the summer months. There is also some shade for those occasional scorching hot days!

There is a covered porch and a carport for guests use and a new large double-garage is planned for completion in Nov 2016.

And if you choose your season wisely you may be able to help yourself to apples, plums or red currants from the old well established trees and bushes!

About Sally and David Spicer

We are a pair of 50 somethings who live in a village on the edge of Oxford. We have 2 grown up children and became grandparents for the first time in 2016. In the winter Dave loves to ski but Sally prefers the rather more sedate (but even more aerobic) activity of snow shoe walking with a group or with friends.

In the summer we both love to walk in the stunning surrounding mountains, or the many other activities Samoens has to offer.

Sally and David Spicer purchased this chalet in 2016

Why Sally and David Spicer chose Samoëns

We had spent several winter holidays in Samoens before deciding to buy here. We love the busy, buzzy historic and beautiful village, with its many bars, restaurants and pretty shops as well as the friendliness of the locals and the fantastic ski area. We saw this house and fell in love with the south-facing terrace, characterful rooms, the quiet but very central location, the space all around the house and the great views out of every window. We knew it would be perfect for winter and summer holidays for us and our extended family to enjoy for many years.

Séjour merveilleux !

  • 5 of 5

Merci beaucoup !!! Nous recommandons vivement cette location.

Samöens is situated in the stunning Vallée du Giffre, just less than one hour's drive from Geneva. It forms part of the Grand Massif ski area with 256km of great skiing encompassing Flaine, Les Carroz, Morillon and Sixt as well as Samoens 1600. But the small town of Samoens is much more than a ski resort. It is full of character, tradition and history, and is the only French ski resort to have national historic monument status. The ancient tree in the old town square dates back to the 1400s and its many old buildings add a wonderful charm to the village.

There are very many restaurants and bars to be explored as well as a small supermarket and many other food shops, including two excellent bakeries, all within 10 minutes walk of the chalet. There is a big Carrefour supermarket just outside the village centre about 5 minutes drive from the chalet or 15 minutes walk.

In winter there is the whole of the ski area to explore and many other activities. We have regularly joined guided snow walks in the beautiful forest and mountain areas around Samoens away from the bustle of the ski slopes. The skating rink which was opened in 2015 is only a few minutes walk from the house.

Once the snows have melted, the village is buzzing with activity. There are over 600 kilometres of mountain bike tracks and almost limitless road biking including the route of the penultimate stage of the 2016 Tour De France, over the Col Du Joux Plane, a challenging 13 kilometre climb with an average gradient of 7.4% but stunning views back into the Giffre valley.

Parapenters set off nearby, gliding from the mountains facing the chalet and landing in a field very close by and we have experienced the great views of the valley (and the chalet!) on the way down.

White water rafting, climbing and 900 kilometres of marked scenic walking trails with the opportunity to stay overnight in mountain refuges add to the variety of summer activities.

Not to be missed is the stunningly beautiful Cirque du Fer à Cheval area at the end of the valley fantastic at any time of the year.

During the busy summer period many of the ski lifts are open, taking bikers and walkers up into the mountains to access the many trails.

The open air swimming pool complex a few minutes walk away has a view of the mountains to die for and is very popular with children and adults alike.

Or you may just choose to sit outside one of the many picturesque cafes in town with a coffee or a beer and watch the world go by.

If you don't have a car there are a number of companies who offer transfers from Geneva Airport at reasonable prices.
