Overview

About the property

A great place for families, with spacious, safe and secure garden with pool.

The Location:

Le Petit Vigier occupies a one acre plot of land amid the vineyards of Bergerac wine region, and adjacent to Chateau des Vigiers hotel and golf course. Because the house itself is relatively isolated, the use of a car is essential. Bergerac Airport is just 25km away, (25mins) away.

The Accommodtion:

The property comprises a character 200 year old single-storey main house (which apparently was originally the gate house for the adjacent Chateau des Vigiers) and a self-contained summer house adjacent to the swimming pool. This set up is great for separate families who want the benefit of each others' company, but the privacy which a second house provides. The main house has four bedrooms sleeping up to 8 adults and 4 children/babies (Max Total 12). The summer house accommodates a further five people and would suit a family, or maybe a group of older children.

The entire plot is completely enclosed, and screened by mature hedges which guarantees safety and seclusion. There is a large wooded area which children find enchanting.

The main house has two large double bedrooms, each with king-sized bed, with additional single bed and cot, and two twin bedded rooms. The layout of the rooms is to some extent flexible depending on the make up of your party. An all adult party could for example sleep 8 adults in comfort. For occasional visitors who may wish to stay over, there is also a double sofa bed situated in the living room.

The master bedroom has a newly installed en-suite shower room with sink and toilet. There is also a new family bathroom, with bath, walk-in shower, sink and toilet. Finally, there is a separate toilet with washbasin. (Photos of these new facilities will be made available by April 2018)

The main house has a large living room, which is cool throughout the day since it is shielded from direct sunlight by the terrace, and is handy for cooling off younger children during the heat of the day.The large, well-equipped kitchen/dining room, opens directly to the garden, and also straight out on to the spacious covered terrace which is great for alfresco dining in the summer months. The terrace looks across the garden towards the swimming pool and summer house, and has a table tennis table and dartboard. To the rear of the house there is a floodlit boules court.

The summer house itself has a double and a triple bedroom (two bunk beds and a single), In addition there is a further single day bed available if required, and a travel cot. The house is totally self sufficient, with bath/shower room, small kitchen, and covered terrace, which opens on to the pool.

The Swimming Pool:

The 12m x 6m swimming pool has a lockable safety fence, and has the benefit of shallow access steps, which is great for smaller children. There is an extensive sun terrace with sun loungers and sun shades, which enjoys the sunshine all day long, The summer-house kitchen is well equipped and has a large fridge which is great for chilling down a steady flow of ice cold drinks (plastic "glasses" provided).

The Garden:

Both houses and the pool are set in the middle of an enclosed and secluded garden plot of about one acre with mature trees, areas of lawn, and attractive shrubs which children will love. In 2017 a new Wendy House was constructed adjacent to the summer house for the kids to enjoy.

Car Parking:

There is off-road car parking for several cars.

The house is well equipped for a relaxing stay, and on top of the well equipped kitchen, there are a number of charcoal BBQ's available in the garden. So that you can travel lighter, all bedding and towels for use in the house are provided, and there are laundry facilities on site for those wishing to keep on top of washing as you go. A laundry and cleaning service is provided at the end of your stay, so there are no delays for you as you depart. There are complimentary beach towels provided for the swimming pool area. (Guests are requested to push these through a wash on their last day after final usage)

The main house has broadband connection with wi-fi. Mobile phone signals are weak, though WhatsApp etc are available through the broadband connection.

Local Activities:

For those wishing to enjoy the outdoor activities of the area, the property has a 27-hole golf course next door,(2 mins) and there are several sets of golf clubs for guests to use. (Late afternoon/early evening is a good time to play, and the club offers "twilight" discounts of about 30%)

There are some childrens' bikes, and two adult bicycles for use by guests, and these can be supplemented by a local bike hire company who will deliver to, and collect from, the property. There is kayaking and canoeing on the Dordogne at Ste-Foy-La-Grande (6km - 8 mins) The quiet roads and paths through the local vineyards are perfect for cyclists, walkers and runners alike, and for those determined to stay fit on holiday, there is a great 5km circular run. There is a floodlit boules court at the rear of the main house, which can be a great way to spend a few hours between the pool and dinner.

Shopping:

Because the food markets and supermarkets are so good, there is ample opportunity to sample the renowned local cuisine at home or in the surrounding restaurants. With plenty of fresh fish available including oysters at around 6 euros a dozen, it can be great fun to relax on the terrace with a cold bottle of Sauvignon Blanc while the BBQ warms up......

Wine

The house is surrounded by the vineyards of Bergerac, Bordeaux, and Duras, and visitors are made most welcome when enjoying a degustation at the local chateaux, great and small, Typically most grow white, rose', and reds, and many also produce the delicious sweet wines. At one end of the scale the individual businesses resemble smallholdings, and at the other are world famous producers such as St Emillion, Bordeaux Superior, Pomerol, and Monbazillac. Visitors to the vineyards are always welcome (though it is best to book) and will find great value wines sold on the premises. Decent everyday wine costs in the region of 6-8 euros.

Shops, Bars & Restaurants:

The property benefits by being in a secluded location, and the nearest shops of any size are in Ste-Foy-La-Grande (6km - 8 mins). There is a terrific Le Clerc hypermarket on the outskirts of the town, and two more very good supermarkets. Fresh fruit and vegetables are sold by local growers on the roadside towards Ste-Foy, and the taste, quality and price are to die for.

Each Saturday morning there is a large and typical French Market in Ste-Foy-La Grande, which is in France's top 100. Here you can stock up on all the fresh produce you could hope for, including fresh fish, fruit & veg, meat and poultry, cheeses, wines, and just about everything else. (see picture)

The nearest bar/restaurant is the bistro at Chateau des Vigiers (1km - 2mins) with stunning views of the Chateau itself (now a hotel and Michelin Restaurant), the lake and the 18th hole of the golf course.

There are several good cafe/bars in Ste-Foy, and in the towns surrounding the property. The nearest restaurant of note is Le Relais, in Monestier, where booking is essential, and very popular is the intimate Lion D'Or in Saussignac. Both of these are about 5 minutes drive from the property. Details of these places, and others, can be found in the property guide in the house. Duras (18km - 15mins) is well worth a visit (there is a market on Mondays in high season) and has several good eateries, as well as the famous chateau, which has many live music events in the summer months. Monsegur 20km - 20 mins)has a lively street food and drink market with plenty of free entertainment every Wednesday evening during the high season, and there are many markets, festivals and special events to be found on the Dordogne tourist website. There are details of a dozen or so very good restaurants within 15 minutes drive of the property, and booking is recommended during high season.

There is a regular train service from Ste-Foy-La-Grande which in one direction will take you to the World Heritage Site Bordeaux City Centre via St Emillion. The train is the recommended method for visting Bordeaux, and there is a great new tram service operating in and around the city-centre) The famous towns lining the R. Dordogne on the line as it heads east up-river include Bergerac, Beynac and Sarlat, where the railway line ends, and beyond them, the hilltop towns of Domme and Roquamador.

There are many interesting and ancient Bastide towns to visit, including Eymet (24km, 30 mins) Issigeac, which has an excellent market on Sundays (35km - 40 minutes) and what many describe as the most beautiful of all, Monpazier (45km - 50 mins)

General:

Because there are no immediate neighbours, and the site is completely enclosed, your holiday party can make as much noise as they wish, and can run free in the large wooded garden, kick balls, swim in the pool, play in the Wendy House, or chill on the terrace.

For younger children there are a number of board games, card games, the Wendy house and several kids' bikes. It is intended that the new tree-house will be available for the summer of 2018. For the bigger ones there is table tennis, boules, 2 adult bikes, and several board/card games such as backgammon, chess, draughts etc.

This is the perfect spot for a relaxing and hassle-free holiday, where children can run freely about the large garden, and there is sufficient space to find a quiet spot to relax.

About John Randle

I retired in 2007, and spent the next several years sailing around the UK and Ireland, and western France. I decided to buy this property as a family project. Having four children, who in turn have my eight grandchildren, they loved the idea of having a house down in France, not far from where they used to come on family holidays. And so it has proved, with the property being so suitable for all ages, from young babies, younger children, and adults all with things to do and places to visit, as well as sufficient space on the plot, to get some peace and quiet if that is what is required.

John Randle purchased this villa in 2015

Why John Randle chose Monestier

There were a number of key criteria which steered me towards this property rather than any of the others I considered. These are:

Size : I wanted somewhere where all the family could visit together if they wanted to, or come with friends and their families. With my children being in their thirties, they have many friends who are in a similar position to them, therefore I wanted a property which can accommodate two, or even three families.

Space : Ideally I wanted a large and easily maintained garden plot, where the grand-kids could run around and kick a ball without supervision, with no worries about their safety and security.

Swimming Pool : If possible I wanted a large swimming pool which is child friendly. The pool at Le Petit Vigier is fantastic, since it is large (12m x 6m), has a beautiful sun terrace around it, has shallow steps for the introduction of toddlers to the water, and is fully enclosed by a safety fence. It is fully maintained on a weekly basis, so will be in sparkling condition at all times.

Airport : Bergerac airport is a mere 25 minutes away, with regular flights from a dozen UK airports, such as Stansted, Manchester, Bristol, East Midlands, City and Southampton. Bordeaux Inernational airport is also possible, though further away.

Golf : Good courses are few and far between in the Dordogne, and Chateau des Vigiers is at the very top in terms of quality and ease of booking, due to its offer of 3 x 9 hole set up, and its beautiful terrain. Golf groups have used the property as a base when playing there over several days, and the brasserie/bar are perfect for an after game drink and dinner.

Accessibility: The house combines a sense of privacy and seclusion (there are no close neighbours) with easy access to local shops and services in and around Ste-Foy-La-Grande, which is only 7/8 minutes away by car. The Le Clerc Supermarket has a fantastic range, and the Saturday market is regularly in the France top 100

What makes this villa unique

As a property it is so easy to use, combining traditional architecture from 200 years or so ago, with a light and airy feel, and the recent addition of a new kitchen, and new bathrooms.

The single storey house layout lends itself to easy access for people of all ages and abilities, and being totally enclosed, the plot is perfect for children and pets, and well behaved dogs are welcome.

A perfect place for a relaxing family holiday

  • 5 of 5

I spent a week at Le Petit Vigier with my sons, daughters in law, and grandchildren. We had great weather and a relaxing stay, knowing that the children were safe to run around within the secure grounds and play games to their hearts' content.. Once we got them to bed, the well equipped kitchen was ideal for conjuring up al fresco evenings meals with thew beautiful local wines on the covered terrace overlooking the garden.

We even manged to fit in a round of golf at Chateau des Vigiers next door, and some cycling on the quiet roads through the vineyards. We are going back this summer to sample it all again!

The children (aged 1-5) loved the pool with its easy stepped access at the shallow end.

Brilliant villa for families and wine lovers

  • 5 of 5

Second time our family have been to this villa. It's spacious, really well equipped with beautiful large garden and big pool. Great for families chilling around the pool and short day trips to excellent local vineyards. Super easy to arrive at by flying to either Bordeaux or (better) Bergerac. Highly recommended.

The property is surrounded by welcoming vineyards either a short drive or cycle ride away, and Chateau des Vigiers Spa Hotel and Golf Course (27 holes) is literally adjacent to the plot. This was named best hotel golf complex in France in 2015, and also boasts two fine restaurants.

There is easy access to Bordeaux by train from Ste-Foy-La-Grande, the nearest town, which also has its wonderful Saturday morning market, regularly in the France top 100.

Bordeaux old city centre is a World Heritage site, and is well worth a visit. The renowned 54m euro Wine Museum opened in 2016, and is considered to be the best of its kind in the world.

Nearest beaches are about 1.75 hours away on the Atlantic coastline running north/south from Arcachon and the amazing Dune de Pila to Biscarosse and Mimizan. The caves at Lascaux with Paleolithic wall paintings are a must for those with an interest in archeology.

The train heads east towards Sarlat along the R.Dordogne, and keen cyclists have used the train to travel with their bikes to Sarlat, Domme, and La Roque Gageac before cycling home along the river.

For the less energetic, the Dordogne towns and villages, and the medieval Bastide towns of Monsegur, Villereal, Issigeac, and Eymet are an easy day's drive from the property, as is the wonderful wine town of St-Emilion. You simply cannot avoid vineyards, and there are details of all 280 or so chateaux great and small of the Bergerac Appellation at the house, with its "Route des Vins" to explore, let alone the 70 miles or so of Bordeaux vineyards to the west, the nearest being just 0.5km away.
