About the property

Working Vineyard with Lovingly Restored Luxury House for up to 14 people

Stunningly renovated vineyard that offers comfortable and stylish accommodation for large family gatherings and groups of friends. With six en suite bedrooms, seating and dining areas for 14 people to sit together both inside and out, a private swimming pool and a stunning kitchen. This house offers everything you would need for a fantastic holiday.

The house was originally the Chai of Chateau de Benauge and formed part of the historical estate once owned by King Henry II of England. First built in the 12th Century, it retains some of the original features but has been renovated to today’s highest standards seamlessly blending the old with the new.

The eat-in kitchen is fully equipped with high-end Miele appliances and provides ample room in which to cook for large groups. The Grand Salon, with its four-meter high ceilings, offers seating for 14 around an impressive open fireplace as well as formal dining for the same number. The media room includes a 60 inch flat screen TV with English Satellite TV and access to the thousands of films available on Netflix. While the conservatory area provides the ideal place to sit and read a book with views over the pool – during the winter it also houses the table tennis table. Each of the six bedrooms has an en suite bathroom and comfortable beds, some of which can be configured into single or double beds. There are two more single beds on the mezzanine above the Grand Salon that are served by a further shower room. Crisp white linen and towels for use in both the house and around the pool are provided. Travel cots and high chairs are available upon request.

The house is set in three hectares of garden, vineyard and ancient oak forest. Outside the south/south west facing pool area looks out over the valley. The swimming pool is open for use during the summer months and offers a great place to cool-off while sunbathing on the loungers around the pool. There is a large lawn (ideal for playing games), a shaded dining area for 14 people and seating areas from which to enjoy the view and sunset. There is off-road parking for 10 cars.

Set on the top of a hill, with sweeping views over rolling hills and vineyards, this is the ideal house to get away from it all. But, at the same time, it’s not too far to anywhere. The nearest town – Cadillac - is just 4 miles away. This small walled town has everything you would want – restaurants, bakeries, supermarkets and a Saturday market each week. For wine lovers, it is the ideal location from which to visit the vineyards of Saint-Émilion; Graves; Sauternes and Barsac; and Entre-Deux-Mers – all of which are within a thirty-minute drive. There are many hiking and cycling trails around the house, while it takes just 45 minutes to reach the center of Bordeaux by car.

All of our guests are welcomed with a case of wine and for those staying more than seven days we do carry out a mid-stay clean. However, to make your stay more comfortable, our non-resident housekeeper is able to provide a range of services such as shopping, cooking, additional cleaning and organising private wine tasting trips all for a reasonable price.

About Joanne Basford

We are Tim and Joanne and we bought this house in France in 2013 when it was a basically derelict. Even then we knew it was a special house and we immediately fell in love with its surroundings, the view and the warm feel of the house.

Since 2013 we have been renovating the house and we've put our heart and soul into this house. As a result we're fairly confident that we haven't overlooked anything - we've even put in international power sockets that accept English, French and US plugs without the need for an adapter!!

Whilst we’ve been renovating, we’ve still trying to get out and see as much of the area as we can. From the immediate vineyards surrounding our house to the broader area - we spend our days when we're in France wine-tasting, visiting historical monuments and trying the great food. We've spent a lot of time here now and we're never bored - I'm sure you won't be either. This house is a happy, peaceful and relaxing place to be.

Why Joanne Basford chose Arbis

There are many reasons to want to stay in our house. Firstly, it is beautiful. We've kept many of the original stone features, the wine cellar and the large open fireplaces. But we've added all of the modern conveniences and high-tech gadgets anyone would want on holiday. It's also a big house meaning that it can hold a lot of people without feeling like you are falling over each other. We've put an ensuite bathroom in every bedroom so that you don't have to stand in a line and everyone has some privacy.

Secondly - its a relaxing place to be. The surrounding countryside is simply stunning and its very peaceful.

Lastly - location. This house is situated in the midst of the main attractions of the Bordeaux area - and there is always something going on in the area.

What makes this farmhouse unique

The history of this house is quite unique. Originally part of the Chateau de Benauge estate, this house was the Chateau's wine chai and dates back to the 13th century. The Chateau itself was once owned by King Henry II of England and his wife Eleanor and Aquitaine and there are still remnants from the battles for the Chateau in our garden.

Stunning Vineyard in Bordeaux Countryside with private pool
average rating of 5.0 based on 1 reviews

Stunning location and fab restoration

  • 5 of 5

Property is very well designed but highly practical and although a little remote from the nearest town it's only 10 minutes in the car. Owners very helpful and plenty of restaurants in the area, though cooking facilities are superb if you like trying your hand at local produce. Easy day trips to the wine towns and Bordeaux, and direct U.K. Flights to Bordeaux. We drove which was a great trip. Can't wait to go back with the family
