About Sue Jaffer

I (Sue) am Australian, but lived in England for nearly 20 years. My husband Nick is English, originally from Derbyshire, and his brother and sisters still live in the UK. We brought our children, James and Rachel, up in a village in the Chilterns. Today we live in Melbourne, Australia but come to UK frequently, to see family and because of Nick's academic work at Oxford.

Sue Jaffer purchased this cottage in 2010

Why Sue Jaffer chose Wirksworth

We think Acacia Cottage is special - quiet, very well appointed and with wonderful views from every window. The Peak District is a magical place, with lots of history and spectacular scenery. Whatever you like doing - eating, walking, cycling, shopping, driving around - the area can cater for you. We are close to the Southern end of the Peak District rail trail - you can hire cycles at Middleton Top - and less than one hour's drive to the High Peak with its caves and mountains. Wirksworth, Cromford and Ashbourne have good restaurants. Matlock Bath and Matlock are within 15 minutes drive. For children there are the attractions at Abraham's Heights, Carsington Water and - not too far away - Alton Towers. If you like stately homes, we are close to Chatsworth and Haddon Hall. There are many gardens you can visit, including Lea Rhododendrum Gardens just across the valley. The local train line is easy to get to, about 20 minutes into Derby (with free parking at the station). If you like history, the museum of Arkwright's Mill at Cromford is a must. Canal walks are also a local feature, from Cromford.

What makes this cottage unique

Our cottage is the ideal base for a relaxing holiday. Blossoms in spring, wonderful colours in autumn, rural views all year round. Local walks to Black Rocks are lovely, and Wirksworth is a charming town with a thriving hobby railway. Bolehill is on the edge of the Peak District, with Chatsworth, Haddon Hall, Alton Towers, the High Peak and Bakewell all within easy driving distance. There are good local restaurants in Ashbourne, Matlock and Wirksworth, with many gastro pubs a short drive away.

really lovely cottage, very comfortable and everything you could need.

the only thing i would add - for those staying with kids is some plastic drinking cups / plates / bowls - but they may have been in a cupboard we just didn't spot.

Owner's Response: So glad you enjoyed your stay. Thank you for the suggestion of plastic cups and plates for children. That is something we hadn't thought of, but it is a very good idea. We will get a set of each for the cottage now. Thank you! Sue

Beautiful Acacia Cottage in Derbyshire

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful long weekend break with friends in Acacia Cottage. Although the weather was cold the cottage was extremely cosy mainly due to the underfloor heating.

This cottage provides everything required - exceptionally clean and well maintained.

It is highly recommended.

Fabulous cottage in a super position

  • 5 of 5

Before the visit, the owner was very accommodating, changing the dates for our visit without any issues. The quality of the cottage is top notch. It looks new throughout and the layout worked well for two families plus Grandma. One family took the main bedroom which accommodated a cot bed and blow-up easily. The remaining bedrooms are all a good size. Magnificent views (once the fog cleared) and access in and out of the village was easier than anticipated. Under floor heating welcome during Feb. Kitchen has everything you could wish for, although we did eat out for the majority of meals. Nice touch having a bottle of wine and cookies awaiting our arrival. There is a lot of information provided for the local attractions and the children enjoyed learning about Oxford from the Monopoly board game! We would happily book again in the future. No issues with the refunding of the deposit. Thank you, Sue.

Ideal property for walking in Derbyshire, 3 good bedrooms, one box room.

  • 5 of 5

Enjoyed fabulous weather which helped us overcome one or two niggles.

Decor was excellent, bed rooms well equipped except the downstairs bedroom. It's office come bedroom really not suitable for a couple, with

two large chairs in it, it might be better to be re sorted to a good single ?

The ensuite master bathroom has a sink that's difficult to use for anything other than rinsing hands, not enough room to brush teeth due to glass shelf over this sink.. Lighting was poor in the kitchen dinning room. Not enough light to do prep work in the kitchen. Lovely table lamps on sideboard gave subdued light, two ceiling lights on a low wattage, fan and one downlight over cooker threw light over the cooking range which was very welcome. The kitchen is very well planned as 4 people can prepare their meals in the space at the same time.

A Second fridge would be good for a party of 4 couples who all bring their own food and drinks. There is floor and cupboard space available for a second fridge. This is an honest report, of our feelings as we 8 adults found the house, niggles did not stop us enjoying the holiday, and enjoy the excellent views towards Wirksworth from the conservertry. The quality of furniture and fittings were of a high standard, along with the cutlery glasswear and China. Many thanks for a lovely venue. 23/02/2018

Beautiful, cosy cottage with exceptional views .

  • 5 of 5

The perfect place for our family Christmas get together. Plenty of room for us all and a perfect location. The rooms were cosy and comfortable and the kitchen well equipped. We all loved the underfloor heating and the spacious sun room with the view over Wirksworth. The beds were all really comfortable although the sofa bed in the study could have benefitted from a mattress topper as it was a little hard and uncomfortable but all in all a wonderful accommodation. Highly recommended.
