Originally three miners cottages, Acacia boasts three good-sized double bedrooms (one en-suite) and one study/bedroom with a sofabed, modern kitchen with gas range, large dining room, sitting room, study and large sunroom. Under-floor heating and wood burner make this delightful snug in winter. Outside is a large terrace with spectacular views. Local walks include the Peak District rail trail and across the valley to Wirksworth. The facilities include good wi-fi and flat screen tv.

About Sue Jaffer

I (Sue) am Australian, but lived in England for nearly 20 years. My husband Nick is English, originally from Derbyshire, and his brother and sisters still live in the UK. We brought our children, James and Rachel, up in a village in the Chilterns. Today we live in Melbourne, Australia but come to UK frequently, to see family and because of Nick's academic work at Oxford.

Why Sue Jaffer chose Wirksworth

We think Acacia Cottage is special - quiet, very well appointed and with wonderful views from every window. The Peak District is a magical place, with lots of history and spectacular scenery. Whatever you like doing - eating, walking, cycling, shopping, driving around - the area can cater for you. We are close to the Southern end of the Peak District rail trail - you can hire cycles at Middleton Top - and less than one hour's drive to the High Peak with its caves and mountains. Wirksworth, Cromford and Ashbourne have good restaurants. Matlock Bath and Matlock are within 15 minutes drive. For children there are the attractions at Abraham's Heights, Carsington Water and - not too far away - Alton Towers. If you like stately homes, we are close to Chatsworth and Haddon Hall. There are many gardens you can visit, including Lea Rhododendrum Gardens just across the valley. The local train line is easy to get to, about 20 minutes into Derby (with free parking at the station). If you like history, the museum of Arkwright's Mill at Cromford is a must. Canal walks are also a local feature, from Cromford.

What makes this cottage unique

Our cottage is the ideal base for a relaxing holiday. Blossoms in spring, wonderful colours in autumn, rural views all year round. Local walks to Black Rocks are lovely, and Wirksworth is a charming town with a thriving hobby railway. Bolehill is on the edge of the Peak District, with Chatsworth, Haddon Hall, Alton Towers, the High Peak and Bakewell all within easy driving distance. There are good local restaurants in Ashbourne, Matlock and Wirksworth, with many gastro pubs a short drive away.

Fantastic Property

We were two couples staying at this amazing property. Its large, spacious and the most well equipped place I've ever stayed in. The view from the terrace is gorgeous and the walk into Wirksworth only ten minutes away. Everything you need on your doorstep.

Sue, the owner gave such detailed advice on how to find it, and many thanks to her for

letting a property which was really home from home. Can't wait to stay again.

Lovely house with space for all the family

The cottage was ideal for our annual family get together including 2 small grandchildren. Well designed, the house has everything you need. Sadly the weather was wet and miserable much of the time but the underfloor heating kept us cosy. In better weather the patio would be great for sitting and admiring the beautiful view. Plenty to do in the area and within easy walking distance of Wirksworth even for a 3 year old. For longer walks the High Peak Trail is close by. There are one or two maintenance issues, for example the toilet door on the ground floor does not shut! For this reason only 4 star rating.

Lovely cottage

Great sized cottage for 2 families affording it’s own space when you need it. Plenty of crockery, cutlery and glasses. Large dining room, snug lounge and large orangery. Bedrooms are a good size, downstairs bedroom a little uncomfortable for a couple. It may be designed as the overspill room likely intended for children but they will always want to be upstairs and part of the family. We really enjoyed the stay and would definitely return. Not complaints just observations: Take care with the over bath shower in the bathroom as it needs securing more firmly in place. Main bedroom ensuite could do with a larger sink as it’s very small. If the door was reversed to open into the bedroom it would accommodate a larger sink.

the only thing i would add - for those staying with kids is some plastic drinking cups / plates / bowls - but they may have been in a cupboard we just didn't spot.

In off-peak periods we do allow bookings for a shorter period than a week, minimum 3 nights.Our standard rate for this is a bit higher than the nightly charge for a full week booking.
