About Sue Jaffer

I (Sue) am Australian, but lived in England for nearly 20 years. My husband Nick is English, originally from Derbyshire, and his brother and sisters still live in the UK. We brought our children, James and Rachel, up in a village in the Chilterns. Today we live in Melbourne, Australia but come to UK frequently, to see family and because of Nick's academic work at Oxford.

Sue Jaffer purchased this cottage in 2010

Why Sue Jaffer chose Wirksworth

We think Acacia Cottage is special - quiet, very well appointed and with wonderful views from every window. The Peak District is a magical place, with lots of history and spectacular scenery. Whatever you like doing - eating, walking, cycling, shopping, driving around - the area can cater for you. We are close to the Southern end of the Peak District rail trail - you can hire cycles at Middleton Top - and less than one hour's drive to the High Peak with its caves and mountains. Wirksworth, Cromford and Ashbourne have good restaurants. Matlock Bath and Matlock are within 15 minutes drive. For children there are the attractions at Abraham's Heights, Carsington Water and - not too far away - Alton Towers. If you like stately homes, we are close to Chatsworth and Haddon Hall. There are many gardens you can visit, including Lea Rhododendrum Gardens just across the valley. The local train line is easy to get to, about 20 minutes into Derby (with free parking at the station). If you like history, the museum of Arkwright's Mill at Cromford is a must. Canal walks are also a local feature, from Cromford.

What makes this cottage unique

Our cottage is the ideal base for a relaxing holiday. Blossoms in spring, wonderful colours in autumn, rural views all year round. Local walks to Black Rocks are lovely, and Wirksworth is a charming town with a thriving hobby railway. Bolehill is on the edge of the Peak District, with Chatsworth, Haddon Hall, Alton Towers, the High Peak and Bakewell all within easy driving distance. There are good local restaurants in Ashbourne, Matlock and Wirksworth, with many gastro pubs a short drive away.

Beautiful, cosy cottage with exceptional views .

  • 5 of 5

The perfect place for our family Christmas get together. Plenty of room for us all and a perfect location. The rooms were cosy and comfortable and the kitchen well equipped. We all loved the underfloor heating and the spacious sun room with the view over Wirksworth. The beds were all really comfortable although the sofa bed in the study could have benefitted from a mattress topper as it was a little hard and uncomfortable but all in all a wonderful accommodation. Highly recommended.

Perfect English Cottage!

  • 5 of 5

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Acacia Cottage! The cottage has everything one would need and has gorgeous views from every vantage point- especially the sunroom and patio. The short walk to town is breathtakingly adorable- with cow and sheep pastures, little gates, bridges and a beautiful cemetery. The town of Wirksworth has friendly people, good pubs, shopping and food. Definitely check out the High Peak Trail! We had the best time and hope to return!

Lovely cottage- great location. Excellent for a family get together.

  • 5 of 5

We thoroughly enjoyed a week in this welcoming cottage. It was the perfect place for our family get together. The property is of a high standard and well equipped - a real home from home. It is more suitable for seven people rather than eight as the fourth bedroom is small. The garden and terrace area offer stunning views and the lawn was ideal for our little crawling grandson!

There are several National Trust properties in the vicinity (good for picnicking!) and walks from the doorstep along the Heritage Trail and into Wirksworth, the nearby village. The local folk are all very friendly.

We would recommend this holiday home to anyone wanting a rural get away with family or friends.

Great cottage with lovely views

Very nice stay here within easy walking distance of Winksworth village where we found a great restaurant for suppers. Easy driving distance to all sites in the Peak District especially Chatsworth. Would recommend.
