Onano is located, like the other small villages in the area, on a tuff cliff, very close to the border with Tuscany. During the Middle Ages underwent various vicissitudes linked to the conflict between the Guelphs and Ghibellines, and the disputes between local lords and Papal States.

It was dominated by the Monaldeschi and later by the Sforza, who controlled the area for a long time, also making several improvements to the country. After the rule of the Sforza small village passed again under the control of the Church and later the Dukes of Onano.

Palazzo Madama

Located in the center of the village, this majestic and imposing fortress was built in the mid '300. The manor was irretrievably destroyed by Lanzichenecchi, in 1527, after returning from the sack of Rome, but promptly rebuilt by Corrado della Cervara.

Church of St. Mary of the Immaculate Conception

The church was built in 1784 and has great significance for the people of Onano, as it maintains the urns of the patron, St. Tryphon and St Columba.

Church of Our Lady of Grace

It 'a beautiful Romanesque church, rebuilt and expanded in the fourteenth century, it is worth a visit especially for the beautiful frescoes of the Sienese school. Noteworthy also is the canvas with the image of the Virgin and Child.

The little church of the Madonna del Piano

E 'was built in 1492. Interesting is the image of the Virgin and Child, by Antonio del Massaro said Pastura. The church has suffered war damage.

Celebrities:

Pope Pius XII (Eugenio Pacelli) grandson of Marcantonio Pacelli Onano, who used to spend the summer holidays of his childhood.

The artist and singer Lina Cavalieri repeatedly stayed in Onano, birthplace of Teonilla Peconi mother.
