These two magnificent period properties are set in private grounds in the heart of a historic medieval village just 20 minutes from Carcassonne. The château and cottage are set in their own private gardens, surrounded by lawns, flowerbeds and vegetable gardens. It benefits from a completely private wonderful sheltered swimming pool. It is ideal for a large family or two to three families holidaying together and wanting a safe and quiet haven. The whole site is private & not overlooked. There is also a lovely self contained two bedroom house in the grounds. During July and August the Château is usually combined with the cottage as one rental with a maximum of 16 people. The village is on the edge of the historic Etaing de Marseillette with miles of easy cycling on quiet country lanes to explore. It has a bakery & bar with excellent shops & restaurants close by. It is also the heart of the Minervois wine region & vineyards & close to the Canal du Midi. Only 45 minutes from the sea, the property is also close to the lakes & mountains & perfect for activity and family holidays or a quiet romantic break.

We moved from London to France in 2003 with our six children and bought Clos des Archers in 2004. It has been a labour of love restoring this 19th century Maison de Maitre and the cottage and grounds. We work in the wine business and we wanted to be closer to our producers.
Alex and Pipa Francis purchased this chateau / country house in 2004
We were looking for a large family house and one which also offered the possibility of guest accommodation for friends and family. We fell in love with the lovely proportions of all the rooms, the space and quietness of the grounds and the huge potential of the house. We were looking for somewhere that was rural but not isolated and it is quite rare to find houses of this size in a village and with substantial outside space. Being just 20 minutes from Carcassonne is a big advantage.
The orientation of the property is such that there is always a sunny and sheltered corner to be found throughout the day. The high walls (Cloister) provide privacy and shade when needed. The terraces are in full sun in the summer, as is the pool. Having proper lawn is also a great advantage for lying out in the sun while the house provides much needed shade on the north lawn for small children to play outside. The house and bedrooms never get too hot in the summer.
The surrounding countryside is really beautiful, with many lovely walks and rides leading away from the village through vineyards, rivers and streams. Within a short drive you can be up in the mountains and lakes and streams or down at the coast. It is a really safe village and area for children and everyone looks out for each other.
We spent two weeks in the cottage and had a wonderful time! Lovely house, fantastic garden and pool - indeed very cosy and private. Perfect place for friends and family. Our children had their time of their life with all the toys left for them to play with. And we played ping pong;-) The owners are very friendly - and we enjoyed fresh vegetables from the garden nearly every day. We will be back! Enjoy!
Best wishes, Mona from Norway
We rented Clos des Archers for 3 weeks during the summer and we had a fantastic stay! Our whole family was there and we had a great time.
The location of Clos Des Archers is perfect and the owners, Alex and Pippa were always only one phone call away always willing to help us with information on sites to visit or just info on the closest grocery store! :) Clos des Archers is impeccable and we have very fond memories of the awesome family vacations we experienced :)
Would go back in a heartbeat
We stayed in the converted coach house, which is next to the main house. The house was thoughtfully decorated, spacious and very clean. There was a lovely patio area, and use of the gardens and trampoline. The pool was an excellent size, immaculate and well kitted out for the children with a safety cover. The owners were very warm and helpful, greeting us with a bottle of rose on our arrival. They were always on hand for advice, or if we needed anything, and went out of their way to make us feel comfortable. When our children wanted ice cream late on sunday evening when all the shops were closed Alex came out with a tub for them. The house is particularly good for families. There were many suitable toys and dvds for the children, and all the kit you would need. They loved the chickens and picking up their eggs for breakfast. The village is quiet, beautifully located, and is perfect for visiting Carcassonne and the region. We would come back and would very much recommend it to our friends other families.
My finest recommendation for future guests at this charming, userfriendly, spacy and relaxing home.
Excellent for families with small and/or grown-up children.
Many opportunitites to explore the surroundings.
We stayed in the Chateau and Cottage for 14 days during July 2012. We were a group of 4 families with 8 adults and 7 children and found this property perfect for a stay in the area surrounding Carcassonne.
During our stay the weather was great, at least 25 degrees Celsius with up to 37, which made sure that the pool was in use every single day. Some days the wind was a bit too harsh. There was a very clever pool “carpet” making sure we could close the pool without having to look for the kids not getting in to the water.
The children were between 2 and 12 and they had a wonderful time exploring the house and playing with all the toys that were let to our disposition. An enormous selection of movies made sure that both kids and grown-ups could find good entertainment when needed. Also a few bikes were at our disposition. And for sure the drum set and the piano was challenged during morning and afternoon jams…
We only used the kitchen in the Chateau, which has plenty of space to be able to cook for the whole group. We had dinner 3 different places around the house, both outside and inside, which says a lot about the flexibility of this place.
The rooms were lovely, with high ceilings and very spacious. Even though they were meant for two to sleep in, we easily slept a whole family (4 people) in one room. That was a great flexibility for us.
In the village there is a bakery store, which sells bread form the nearby village Badens. It’s closed on Mondays, but you can go to Badens for bread. Also there is a vineyard across the street with very good wine (all the local wine we had was great ?). We went for a guided tour one Wednesday in their fields and enjoyed a wine tasting in the courtyard (The tour was in English). Also during our stay there was a market with local producers in the town square.
The villages Trébes (supermarket, Canal de Midi and dining), Caunes-Minervois (The Black Mountains, wine and marbel), Homps (Canal de Midi, Dining) and Olonzac (great market on Tuesdays) are all recommendable places to go. And of course Carcassonne, both the castle and the city itself. Our kinds had a great time watching the Knight spectacular in castle, highly recommendable with kids.
We had great use of renting cars when staying at the house. The Mediterranean, Narbonne and lots of other places are easily accessible with 1 – 1½ hours’ drive from this place.
Will definitely return to the area.
We spent one week in late August 09 and had a marvelous time. The Manor House and small villa were in excellent condition and very clean. The pool and gardens were very well kept. Both were well equiped with everything we needed - plates, utensils, books, DVDs, and TOYS for the little ones. The Owner was extremely helpful throughout and helped arrange cooks to come prepare fabulous dinners which just added to the experience. We found the location to be almost ideal - minutes from Carcassonne and Trebes, but also minutes from some great Minervois towns and about 1-2 hours from some of the most famous Cathar castles. There was something for everyone - adults and children alike. The medievel church adjacent to the property does have bells that ring regularly, so if you are a very light sleeper, this could be a challenge, otherwise it adds to the charm. We highly recommend this property.
