About the property

Poppy Cottage is a charming 18th Century 2 bedroom stone cottage

Featured in 'In the Footsteps of Alexander Cordell' written by the author Chris Barber, Poppy Cottage is a charming 18th Century 2 bedroom stone cottage once occupied by iron workers. The perfect country retreat for those seeking a peaceful beautiful setting for both a relaxed or active getaway. Poppy Cottage is a haven to be discovered...Fantastic walks right outside your front door...

Situated in a rural setting on the side of a mountain in South East Wales with Abergavenny, Crickhowell, and Brecon all within easy reach. There are countless activities in the area, from mountain biking to walking, and for those brave visitors, there are also more extreme activities nearby such as gorge walking & scrambling, caving, horse riding, sailing and climbing.

With a courtyard garden offering stunning views and a myriad of mountain 'and' forest walks, and mountain streams running close by, the Brynmawr to Abergavenny cycle path is just a short distance away. The remains of the original iron works, viaduct, and the largest preserved forest in Europe are within walking distance, and the Monmouthshire and Brecon Canal is just a 5 minute drive away.

Pure cosy cottage comfort 'Poppy Cottage' accommodates 4 - 5 visitors and caters for families, couples, or groups of walking or activity enthusiasts. If fresh air is what you're looking for this is the place to come.

The main bedroom provides a luxurious king size bed, with comfortable bunk beds in bedroom two. If required an additional fold out guest bed and / or travel cot can be provided.

The living area provides seating for all with the modern day convenience of a flatscreen 'Smart' TV and free Wifi.

The fully fitted kitchen, and utility room, include a smoothie maker, bread maker, microwave, oven with hob, washing machine, dish washer and dining for a minimum of 4 - 5 people. Complimentary tea, coffee and milk is provided for all guests, and guests are welcome to help themselves to a bottle of wine from the rack (please replace before you leave)

The cottage also has a separate shower and bath with ample towels and complimentary guest toiletries.

About Nicky

I have worked in the Food Industry for my entire career. In Research & Development, Business Development and now Export. I look after customers all over the world and with that I get to travel abroad occasionally. It goes without saying I love good food, travel, different cultures, and meeting people.

I bought our family cottage in a rural location in the Brecon Beacons 4 years ago close to where my family have lived for over 30 years? I have 2 sons and 1 daughter, and my eldest son has now flown the nest.

Last year (2015) I had the idea that I could share this beautiful location with others and when the opportunity came up to purchase a second cottage 'Poppy Cottage' (named after my daughter Poppy) became a reality.

This is my first time in hosting guests but I have to say I am thoroughly enjoying welcoming all our lovely guests. Ultimately all we want is for Poppy Cottage to feel completely like home from the moment of arriving.

I consider myself very lucky working in Export that I get to do my job almost everyday from such a beautiful place and now I can share it with others as well :) perfect!

Why Nicky chose Monmouthshire

It is rare to discover such a location that you could bypass easily without ever realising it was there. The tranquility and beauty of the rural surroundings is magnificent. Take a walk up to the viaduct and along the cycle path and you have views right across the beacons. This place is truly a hidden gem, a getaway unique.

Poppy Cottage, Clydach

Wonderful cottage, warm and comfortable, with a freshly-baked loaf waiting for us. Great area for walking, and exploring the rich industrial heritage from 200 years ago. Highly recommended.

Stayed for the weeekned as we were in Abergavenny for the food festival. Didn't have a chance to explore the area properly but we loved staying in the cottage. Had everything we needed, from milk in the fridge on arrival to toiletries to lovey clean linen and home made bread!

A cosy cottage in a good location for walks in the Brecon beacons. Nicky was very communicative and we really appreciated the fresh bread and eggs on arrival :)

Beautiful setting, nicely appointed and clean cottage.

  • 5 of 5

We loved the location, lots of grand hikes right out the front door and close to a larger town for provisions. The road way is currently under construction ( a bit noisy) and provided some challenges and exciting detours. We took several nice hikes along the river, and public foot paths with spectacular views, old rail lines, quarries and iron making ruins.

Cosy and Comfortable

  • 4 of 5

We used Poppy Cottage for a weekend break near our family and my wife and I found it very clean ,comfortable, well equipped and cosy. It was ideal for us and our young Springer Spaniel Nellie. Being dog friendly was a real bonus and there are many good dog walks close by. We will certainly be returning and can recommend the property. A nice touch was the smell of freshly baking bread when we arrived and a good wine selection. Many thanks. The owner was very attentive and helpful .
