Barberino Val d'Elsa is a fortified village situated on a hill above the Val d'Elsa 373 meters above sea level, it is located halfway between Florence and Siena in the north western part of the Chianti area.

Barberino Val d'Elsa was founded by the Republic of Florence as a castle, strategically located along the Via Cassia, the town was founded after the destruction of the Florentine troops of the fortress of Semifonte, stronghold of the Counts Alberti, destruction occurred in 1202. Thanks to its position along an important communication route, Barberino Val d'Elsa became one of the main centers of the Florentine countryside.

Entering the old village through the south gate, Porta Senese (XIV century), on the left we find a noble palace: called Palazzo del Cardinale, on its door is the emblem of the Barberini family, that of Pope Urban VIII.

Proceeding on the main street on the right is the Palazzo Pretorio, now the seat of the Propositura di San Bartolomeo, with its beautiful Renaissance façade adorned with 35 crests of 15th-century magistrates. On the opposite side of the square is a loggia that in the past served as a public loggia.

Inside the Church of Barberino, which was radically renovated in 1910 by the architect Castellucci, we can admire some fragments of frescoes from the 14th-15th century, a bronze bust of the Blessed Davanzato as well as a reliquary with his mortal remains.

For a wonderful view of the Chianti hills it is advisable to stop at the belvedere near the church, here they are also an excellent pizzeria and a typical restaurant. Near the Porta Fiorentina (the door to the north of the town) is the Ospedale dei Pellegrini, from 1365, in which there are some frescoes and a tomb. A statue was recently placed in the square in front of the town, in commemoration of Francesco da Barberino, a native 14th century writer from Barberino.

In the surroundings of Barberino Val d'Elsa there are many villages and churches to visit, including the villages of Tignano, Linari, Petrogano and Sant'Appiano. Among the religious buildings is the beautiful Romanesque church of the Pieve di Sant'Appiano (12th-13th century) and the small dome of San Donnino built at the end of the 16th century and reproducing the dome of the Duomo in Florence on a 1: 8 scale. In Marcialla, in the Church of Santa Maria, there is a fresco attributed to Michelangelo Buonarroti. Just below the village of Marcialla there are the ruins of the Castello di Pogni.
