Overview

About the property

Double bed, futon sofa, kitchen area, dining table and external compost toilet

Come and experience a tranquil stay in a truly unique property on the edge of Glen Affric (only 40mins from Inverness and on the Affric-Kintail Way), within easy reach of Loch Ness.

Follow a meandering footpath through the woods to find a sun-filled, private clearing in which your yurt nestles...

The yurt itself is a beautiful, cosy space: perfect for a couple to escape the humdrum of ordinary life. In the 5.5m diameter circular space is a comfy double bed, futon sofa facing a central woodburner, dining area and well-appointed kitchen. In your private clearing is a wooden seating area, firepit, outdoor wash-sink, peaceful compost toilet and al fresco bucket hoist shower.

Set in 100 acres of woodland which hosts pine marten, badger, deer, red kites, buzzards and other birdlife (as well as our resident shetland sheep) it's a perfect opportunity to zone out and reconnect with a more relaxed and natural way.

All bedding is provided as well as snowy towels and flannels. Wake up to a bit of home-made luxury with a complementary breakfast hamper: tea, filter coffee and sugar, fresh mint for herbal tea, home-made granola and hedgerow jam. We also provide some still and sparkling spring water for you.

We provide everything you need to enjoy your retreat (washing up stuff (incl. washing up liquid), kitchen roll, toilet roll, olive oil, salt/pepper, matches) so you can just focus on properly relaxing.

Scotland's weather is wonderfully unpredictable, but that means you can often enjoy the best of both worlds:

Sit out on the wany front step (milled from our own wood) and soak up the sunshine or watch the pine marten feeding from the bird feeders. Toast a marshmallow and enjoy a clear night of stars (we sometimes get the northern lights). Wander through the woodland and explore your wilder side. Or if the weather is less than perfect - cosy up round the central woodburner and read a book, play the board games provided or test yourself with a puzzle. You might even find you enjoy the rain, especially if you listen to it from the inside of such a warm, hand-painted haven. The yurt has traditional wool felt insulation, so is cosy even on a chilly night, and we provide enough kindling and firewood for a few nights. You can purchase more if you need. Whatever the weather, its a beautiful spot to enjoy.

Cannich village is a mile down the hill, and there's a well-stocked and friendly shop, as well as a cafe, pub and several local restaurants that we can recommend. There is also bike hire available at Cannich Caravan Park. We are blessed with a abundance of natural attractions, with Glen Affric just up the glen (named by many to be the most beautiful glen in Scotland), the magnificent Plodda Falls and the ancient remains at Corrimony. Urquart Castle and Beauly are only half an hour's drive away, and all the attractions of Inverness within 40 mins.Whatever your interests, there's plenty to keep you entertained.

We have tried to keep the yurt secluded, which also means it is inaccessible by car - there is an unloading point about 150m from the yurt, after which our trusty wheelbarrow will take the load down the hill into your clearing. The path is easy-going, though there is some rougher ground which makes this site non-accessible to wheelchair users - we hope to make improvements in the future to allow anyone to enjoy this site.

The yurt is solar-powered, with a battery that provides electric lighting and a place to charge a mobile phone. There is some mobile reception in the clearing but no wi-fi :).

There is no water source in the clearing, so various water containers (filled with fresh tap water) are provided for drinking and washing. We have a composting toilet system (no noisy flushes!) and a shower made from a bucket which you fill, hoist and enjoy surrounded by birdsong and ferns.

We are in a wilder corner of the Highlands, and sat nav machines often get a bit confused. Please don't listen to them, but follow the directions we provide. If you get stuck you can always phone us or ask a local in Cannich village!

About Eleanor Forster (Ele)

We are Ele and Craig - we live at Higher Crochail with our 2 year old son and chickens, and are in the planning process for building our strawbale house. We love where we live, and love to share it with others: we are fully qualified mountain, river and sea kayak guides, with ten years experience of expedition leadership, bushcraft, and foraging. We will do our very best to make your stay as wonderful as possible. If you have a questions, please don't hesitate to get in touch! We look forward to meeting you and sharing our lovely corner of the world.

You'll probably meet our lovely neighbours here - Rosie and Alex with their two little daughters. Rosie runs amazing courses on site (check out for info on felting, natural dyeing and prehistoric cookery!) and they keep the sheep and goats which provide our woodland with some extra character!

Why Eleanor Forster (Ele) chose Inverness

A yurt anywhere is a special thing - living in a round space that's crafted with such skill and love is a must-do experience for anyone, whether looking for a bit of luxury or a taste of nature. We think ours is a special spot as well - Higher Crochail sits above the village of Cannich, looking into the mountains of Glen Affric, with the river Glass winding through the Strath below. It's an area of outstanding natural beauty, with amazing wildlife, flora, and fauna, and is a perfect launch spot for outdoor sports, as well as a place of tranquility to relax and escape the stresses of urban life. You are 1 hour by car from dolphin-watching at Rosemarkie, and 40 minutes from Inverness with it's excellent restaurants, music venues and theatre/cinema.

What makes this cabin unique

There are very few places you can lie in a luxurious property while listening to an owl hooting and looking up at a beautifully rounded hand-painted roof. Yurt living really is to be experienced to be believed. As our very first guest others said: 'magical!'

Amazing experience

  • 5 of 5

I had a wonderful time staying at the yurt. The yurt itself is spacious and very cosy especially when the small stove has been on, little fairy lights and candles were a lovely touch. The attention to detail has made it such a beautiful space. Kitchen had everything we needed. The bed was very comfortable with lovely soft white sheets. Waking up to the birdsong then enjoying an outdoor shower was just the most refreshing experience ever!!!

The weather was rather rainy but not cold. Even with the drizzle we were perfectly content in such beautiful surroundings.

Ele was the perfect host. She is very friendly and welcoming.

Would love to come back again xx

Peaceful and comfortable. Perfect escape from city.

  • 4 of 5

Yurt was well equipped, warmed up quickly with stove even when frosty outside. Campfire under the clear skies a treat. Ele and Craig great hosts and very accommodating, going the extra mile to make stay even better. Highly recommended.

What a fantastic place to stay!

  • 5 of 5

We have just returned from our stay in this beautiful mongolian yurt and it has been a wonderful couple of days away. Ele has really gone to every length to make the yurt homely, warm, and fun. There are so many personal touches, both inside and out, that made this experience unique and amazing. Thank you for having us!

Ultra-relaxing visit in terrific location!

  • 5 of 5

Me and my wife stayed here for our 1 year anniversary. The yurt is set in the middle of woodland so we were not overlooked and from start to finish were delighted with how tranquil the surroundings were. The owner catered for every need and was just up the lane if we needed extras, which we didn't. We would thoroughly recommend this to anyone who wants to go back to nature and get away from the stresses of everyday life. Expect to go back to basics but with some additional comforts such as a hot shower (bucket hoist system) and a gas stove. It was also in a perfect location to visit Loch Ness and take in the local highland games! Thankyou Ele and Craig for a lovely time!
