About Jenny Jarvis

We have owned Portland House since 2004. We loved it from the first moment we saw it. It’s a charming house and one we have enjoyed looking after. In 2013 we realised it was too big for us and decided we’d share it with others as a holiday home.

Jenny Jarvis purchased this house in 2004

Why Jenny Jarvis chose Ross-on-Wye

You cannot help but admire this area of outstanding natural beauty. It’s been a privilege to live here for over 12 years in a friendly village, with our fabulous local shop and local restaurants, and near so many attractions in the Forest of Dean Being able to walk straight out of the door with family and the dog to enjoy nature and history at its very best is such a bonus too. So much to appreciate so much to learn.

What makes this house unique

Portland House is Grade 11 listed. The first dwelling began as a modest little cottage in the 17th century, evidenced by some features at the back of the house. . In the 18th century it gained its Georgian façade and became the local asylum and hospital, with the Doctor’s quarters and padded cell! After this it was a Young Gentleman’s Academy.and gained a Victorian wing which is now part kitchen, part lounge. In the 20th century it was divided up into 3 residences and the current Portland House was formed. It was then run as a private hotel, then as B and B for over 40 years.

Fabulous Portland House

  • 5 of 5

I had the pleasure of staying at Portland house along with 18 of my nearest and dearest ladies for my hen weekend in June 2017. Wow, what a house! The house itself is absolutely beautiful. All of the rooms are decorated to a high standard and are very spacious. All bar one of the bedrooms have an en-suite and the house easily accommodated all 19 of us. It didn’t take us very long to feel right at home. The garden was stunning and provided the backdrop for many of our photographs! Luckily we were blessed with fabulous weather too. We found the location to be ideal with amenities close by and easy access to local towns for shopping etc. On arrival at the house we found a most delicious cake had been left for us along with a ‘starter pack’ of kitchen items to get us going. The kitchen itself was very well equipped with everything we needed to prepare and eat our buffet. Both Jenny and John were very responsive and helpful, keeping in touch with us before and during our stay. Overall we all thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Portland house. Every single one of us would highly recommend it and we are already talking about returning next year!

Interesting

  • 4 of 5

We hired the property as it had the right number of bedrooms; a good kitchen + additional space for dining & louge. It also had disabled facilities that we required & was dog friendly. It wsa a good family weekend & the house delivered everything we asked of it!

Wonderful house

  • 5 of 5

This house was far better than we expected, beautiful big and old. Great rooms, and huge garden. The kitchen was bigger than we expected. Loved the open fire and the Aga. Would love to stay again!!!

There is a lovely shop that sells home made and local produce, wine, wood, chocolate, cooking essentials and other exciting treats.

There is also an amazing quirky cafe reataurant "The Potting shed", 5 mins walk down the lane..highly recommended .. best food!

The area is beautiful and Monmouth is great to visit.

(The only thing I wasn't expecting was the big road that harshly cuts through the village ☹️️)

Owner's Response: What a lovely review, thank you very much. We're so pleased you had such wonderful time. The road was built in the 1970s but fortunately we can ignore it with the wonderful countryside all round us. And it really obviously doesn't affect the experience of Portland House. Merry Xmas and Happy New Year!
