Car: recommended

You are in the Marina Alta region, north of the province of Alicante. Benissa is one of the municipalities of the Valencia Community and its extension reaches the sea. Benissa coast is dotted with beautiful coves and warm clear water. Also find very near the mountain, the Sierra de Bernia, Oltá, pines, .... Nearby is Calpe, 8 kms, much more touristy and all kinds of shops and restaurants. Its beaches are of very fine sand and are dominated by the Penon de Ifach, which you must not miss. An excursion to the Rock and enjoy the magnificent views is essential. Further north is Teulada - Moraira. We recommend visiting Moraira, a charming, elegant small town to spend the day at the Cala del Portet or l'Ampolla beach. Other nearby resorts include Denia and Javea.

Denia is particularly remarkable for its gastronomy. Hence comes the famous chef Quique Dacosta, three Michelin stars. Javea has a great beach with restaurants and pubs to enjoy the day or you can also visit the lighthouse of Cabo de la Nao.

As you see you're in the middle of a magnificent environment of mountains, beaches, coves, sea and gastronomy only find here in Benissa.

The main celebrations that the town follows with great devotion are the festivities in honor of the Immaculate Xiqueta, which are held on the fourth Sunday in April and last 10 days. They can highlight the free concerts, bullfighting events and the emotional rise and fall of the virgin before and after the procession, attended by many beniseros.

Other notable festivals are the Moors and Christians, celebrated in honor of San Pedro, the weekend closest to June 29.

Besides these two parties, also celebrated in January and Porrat Fair in honor of San Antonio, which lasts three weekends, the last of which a medieval fair is also held.

What to do

• City Hall: One is located in the Plaza del Portal. It has been installed on the old Municipal Hospital, erected in 1790. For long periods of time was contagious shelter sick and needy.

• Church of the Immaculate Conception: Neo-Gothic style. It is also known as the Cathedral of the Marina because of the magnitude of its dimensions. He finished its construction in 1929.

• House of Juan Vives: Next to where the house is. Tells a story that owners stayed two pilgrims who, when leaving the house and as a token of appreciation, gave the owners the miraculous image of the Immaculate Conception, now patron of the municipality.

• Old Church Square: There the Church-Fortress of San Pedro was built in the S. XIV. It was reformed in S. XVI and that is how it remained until it was destroyed in the early 50s. Today is a secluded square whose use is intended for the realization of various cultural events, among others.

• university Headquarters of the University of Alicante: Stately homes and mansions S. XVIII that currently make, as a whole, an important educational center, part of the University of Alicante, with a wide range of training.

• La Lonja: It is the oldest monument of the municipality. Data S. XVI. Today it houses exhibitions of high artistic and cultural value. It has a marked medieval character composed of three bodies with an arcade ashlar three eyes on the lower floor and dating from the sixteenth century. Formerly on the top floor the Municipal Council was and the bottom was engaged in commercial transactions.

• Riberero (Riberer): The riberer is a very symbolic figure and corresponds to Benissa peasants who emigrated twice a year to the Valencian bank for planting and harvesting of rice. It appears in prayerful position because they had the habit of praying before the stone saved before the journey.

• House Culture: Palace of the Torres-Orduña that now houses the library, exhibition halls, classrooms and Hall for holding various events and events

• Youth House: It was a commercial building. At low weekly market was held. The town hall was in the Casal until he moved to the current building. Today this building houses the Youth Information Office and an Exhibition Hall and classrooms.

• Convent of the Franciscan Fathers: 1645 Data. We can see in its facade a marked defensive character. It stresses the cloister and the church of a single ship.

• Franciscan Seminary: He had a high importance as it formed many young people from all over the country. In this seminar the first cycle of religious education was provided to become Franciscan. Currently it houses the offices of Creama and Afic.
