About the property

Nestled at the gateway to the Yorkshire Dales our cottage is a perfect retreat!

Shaw Mills, a small hamlet in Nidderdale and a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, Holly Beck Stables offers peace and tranquility. There is a high standard of accommodation in this Grade II Listed property with exposed beams, stone flags and solid wooden floors. Dating back to the 1700s and being part of a former farmhouse, the stables, granary and blacksmith’s shop were lovingly converted into a delightful guest cottage. It has been inspected and rated 4 Star with a Gold award by the Tourist Board.

The spacious sitting room has large comfortable sofas, a wood burning stove, high beamed ceilings and pretty garden/village views - making it the perfect place to curl up and read a book. There is a flat screen digital TV, DVD player and a library of DVDs and books. You can relax in front of the stove, for which free logs and kindling are provided. We know how important the internet and keeping in touch has become so Holly Beck Stables is also Wi-Fi enabled with superfast broadband. If music is your thing then there is a CD player.

The kitchen is well equipped with crockery, utensils and recipe books that you would expect to find in your own home, along with a fridge/freezer box, dishwasher, electric cooker, toaster, kettle, and microwave. In addition, we will be offering a ‘Welcome to Yorkshire Hamper’ including local goodies for you to enjoy during your stay.

A dining table and chairs, seating four people, is available for guests to dine together. All tableware is stored in the kitchen for guests to enjoy when having a night of entertaining - along with the corkscrew!

If you want to eat in but don’t want to cook – home cooked food is available to take away from the local pub, The Station Inn at nearby Birstwith offering high quality, locally sourced meals.

On the ground floor, in the spacious shower-room and bedroom you will find Molton Brown toiletries; White Company bed linen and towels; and luxuriously soft, fluffy white dressing gowns. There is a flat screen TV with built-in DVD player and a dock for your IPod on the clock radio - all for you to indulge in when enjoying some much needed R&R.

There is a laundry area, including a front loading washing machine and an airer.

The cottage is set around a courtyard with beautifully stocked borders and elegant outdoor furniture – perfect for enjoying some alfresco dining or a relaxing drink.

Quiet relaxing stay

  • 5 of 5

Really tasteful property, with lovely owners. Had a great short break in Shaw Mills, the cottage had everything we needed, cosy and comfortable.

Great location for exploring the area, Skipton, Harrogate, York and the Dales all in striking distance. Had a great meal at the Station Hotel, Birstwith and the shop there, The Dale Stores, served our shopping needs. Thank you David and Kath for a first class experience.

Love at first sight!

  • 5 of 5

We stayed for 5 days at Kath and Davi cottage and it wasn't long enough. We fell in love with the cottage as soon as we arrived. Kath and Davi attention to detail was amazing which meant the cottage had everything you could possible need or want. We loved the decor and the layout of the cottage.

Both Kath and Davi were lovely, welcoming and very helpful with anything we needed. We really appreciated the hamper of goddies we received on arrival which was such a nice touch and unexpected.

Nice quiet area, very close to Harrogate with plenty of places for walking. Was nice to come home after a long walk to a burning log fire.

We will definitely be back again. Hopefully in the summer next time.

Beautiful comfortable cottage

  • 5 of 5

We were made very welcome on arrival.

The cottage was perfect with lots of personal touches which made it very special.

The location was central for many attractions which most were 20 minutes to a half hour drive.

The bed was the most comfortable one we have ever slept in.

The scenery is breathtaking.

There were some wonderful places to eat.

The cottage enjoys a quiet location being just two miles from Ripley and RIPLEY CASTLE (still bearing the bullet marks of Cromwell's army) where the Ingilby family have lived for the past 670 years.Ripley has a range of shops: post office, hairdressers, art gallery, café, deli, butchers, hotel bar, provisions shop and famous ice cream shop.

Nearby, the quintessential spa town of HARROGATE boasts a stunning mix of historical architecture, green open spaces and vibrant shops and eateries. Wander across the 200 acre stray. Enjoy Bettys Café Tea Rooms, a local institution, with the windows enticingly filled with breads, cakes and scones make the prospect of lunch or afternoon tea irresistible. Harrogate's stylish shopping area has a fine selection of independent retailers; browse the antique shops and fashion boutiques. The splendidly restored Royal Baths, its Moorish-style design dates back to the 1890s; is well worth a visit to enjoy a Turkish Bath and spa treatments. Explore the Valley gardens or RHS Harlow Carr Gardens, the Pump Room museum or one of the town's many art galleries. Then in the evening you may choose a visit to the theatre or drop in on one of the many fantastic restaurants or bars.

One of England's smallest cities, RIPON is known for its historic buildings and beautiful Cathedral as well as traditional customs such as "setting the watch". This thousand year old ceremony takes place nightly at 9:00 p.m. with the blowing of the horn in Ripon Market Place. Boats can be hired for a lazy afternoon on the river at KNARESBOROUGH. Old Mother Shipton's wishing well turning hats to stone is on the Riverside walk there.

It is only a few miles to FOUNTAINS ABBEY, the STUDLEY ROYAL water gardens and the deer park - now a WORLD HERITAGE SITE. On a smaller scale Rievaulx Abbey and the Rievaulx TERRACES are set in the North Yorkshire National Park. The ancient city of YORK with its wonderful Minister, Mediaeval streets, walls and river cruises would make a brilliant day out. NEWBY HALL, its famous house and gardens; And do not miss HAREWOOD HOUSE'S treasures and CASTLE HOWARD where 'Brideshead Revisited' was filmed.

Holly Beck Stables is an ideal centre from which to tour NORTH YORKSHIRE. NIDDERDALE - rightly proud of its place within the Dales, is for many the favourite Dale. It truly deserves its status as an "Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty", with its stunning moorland scenery and tapestry of lush green meadows. Offering fantastic walking opportunities, combined with cosy inns and quaint tea shops.

Experience REAL North Yorkshire and create memories to last a lifetime ....With beautiful countryside to explore, and heritage houses and castles to visit Holly Beck Stables is the perfect base for a romantic or relaxing break or even for conference delegates who want to escape from the hustle and bustle of the Conference Centre to this tranquil spot.
