Overview

About the property

A Paradise For Outdoor Activities, Stunning Scenery, Wildlife and History

The gorges and valleys of southeast Aveyron make deep cuts into the wild limestone plateaux (Causses) of the Grand Causses Regional Natural Park and the better known Cévennes National Park creating an area of outstanding natural beauty and a feeling of being in a land that time forgot. Still standing are fortified villages later maintained by the Knights Hospitaller but originally built by the Knights Templar who probably also helped in the fortification of our village, Cantobre. It’s an area rich in wildlife of all sorts, from wild boar, deer, beavers, eagles and four sorts of vulture, to orchids and other wild flowers. We have seen more species of butterflies in and around Cantobre than are in the whole of the UK.

Both our Cantobre gîtes (or self-catering holiday rentals) have stunning views of the Dourbie valley from their private terraces and access to our 800 m2 garden that includes a pétanque/boules court, a grassed area and our own rock that probably has the best views of Cantobre and a 360° panoramic view of the Trèvezel and Dourbie valleys and the 3 limestone plateaux (Causse Bégon, Causse Noir and Causse du Larzac) that surround us. There is also a small, terracotta tiled, north facing terrace with views that equal the stunning views from each gîte’s private terraces. The gîtes have very well equipped kitchens, washing and drying machines and for the occasional rainy day the living rooms are equipped with Terrestrial Television which provides French channels and a Satellite receiver to watch UK Freesat channels. We share our own library with you so you can read a book or two while you stay with us, the library also contains many games and puzzles, and CDs and DVDs that you can play on the DVD player provided. Free secure WiFi internet is also provided.

We used to come to the area for our holidays and it’s perfectly situated for a wide variety of visits and activities. It’s now our home and we are on hand to help you with your luggage and shopping when you arrive and to make your stay more enjoyable.

You could spend a holiday here without having to use your car, hiking in the hills, walking down to the river Dourbie for a swim in the crystal clear water or a spot of sunbathing or maybe fly fishing for the local zebra trout; alternatively, just stay in our secluded garden with 360° views of the surrounding countryside or relax on your gîte’s terrace with a bowl of olives, a glass or two of wine and our bird watching telescope.

If you did want to drive somewhere, 45 minutes north takes you to the Tarn Gorge, the northern boundary of France’s Mediterranean climate. Also a favourite route for cyclists, 30 minutes west down the Dourbie Valley is Millau, a big centre for outdoor sports such as paragliding, canoeing, caving and climbing (we also have our own climbing wall at Cantobre) with an Olympic-sized outdoor swimming pool, and it’s our nearest big town with hypermarkets and a large outdoor market, it’s also home to the Millau Viaduct, the world’s tallest bridge. 5 minutes to the south takes you up the Dourbie Valley to the 10th century village of Nant with restaurants and bars, our nearest shops and market; in summer there are free music events every week. Another 25 minutes southwards takes you out of the causses and the mountain air and into the Languedoc, France’s largest wine production region; another 45 minutes and you’re at the Mediterranean coast!

There are lots of family visits to go on, boat trips down the river Tarn, caves and caverns with stalagmites and stalactites, visiting Roquefort cheese caves, the reptilarium, wild animal parks and Micropolis, a whole centre about insects; there are even Knights and jousting tournaments; all are favourites places to visit when our young grandson comes to stay.

About Lionel and Peggy Haines

I am English and my wife is Irish. Although we have been together since 1983 we only got married in 2009 in preparation for our new life together in France.

Lionel and Peggy Haines purchased this cottage in 2009

Why Lionel and Peggy Haines chose Nant

We used to come on holiday to the region every other year for a long time and the opportunity to live here and make enough money to survive came up. So we have been living here since December 2009 and are enjoying every minute of it. Both of us love the countryside and the wildlife here and in between looking after the gîtes we go for lots of walks. It's a fantastic place to live, come and share it with us!

What makes this cottage unique

We are surrounded by countryside, both valley scenery and the wild "causse" land above the valley. Boredom is impossible here: we never tire of the scenery from our terraces or driving down the Dourbie valley to Millau. I love to go fishing in the beautiful crystal clear Dourbie trout river if only for "a walk on the wild-side", catching a fish is secondary to watching a beaver swim past or catching a glimpse of a deer or red squirrel drinking from the river while a kingfisher darts by!

Peggy, on the other hand prefers having a coffee on dry land, meeting friends and watching village life in nearby Nant.

Notes:
We supply free WiFi Internet access, and DVDs, books, games, geocaching/hiking GPS system are available. Please note that while our accommodation and terraces are suitable for all ages (and we have had all ages here), we would recommend that very young children be supervised on or near the southern edge of our shared garden and on our rock as there is no fence. Outside: Both the gîtes have their own private south facing terraces with BBQs, sun shades, table and chairs. As well as a limited number of sun loungers, we also have a small shared north facing terrace with seating for 4 people which is ideal in the early evening or to escape the sun during the day. Our terraced garden (home to redstarts, our chickens and our veg patch too) with a boules court is also shared between the two gîtes, as is our rock from which there is a 360 degree view of the village, the two valleys and the climbing wall (bring your own ropes).

fantastic gites and hosts

  • 5 of 5

We had a fantastic family holiday in this lovely location. The Gite is located in the lovely village of Cantobre with fabulous views over the Dourbie Valley and is a great location for exploring the local area. The gite itself is very modern with all mod cons including wi-fi, satellite T.V etc and is very well maintained and is very clean throughout. Peggy and Lionel are most helpful and pleasant couple you could wish for, both will do whatever they can do to assist you in making your stay the best you could have.

Cantobre village itself is lovely and peaceful, and an ideal area for lazy walks or hard hikes or just to sit around and laze.

Millau is only a short drive away and has plenty to offer. we would certainly recommend it to friends and family and have already returned with elderly parents who also loved the place.

We have already booked for our fourth visit in April 2014

I would say it feels like you are staying with friends rather than being a visitor.

We have already booked for our fourth visit in April 2014 and I know that this will not be our last visit to Lionel & Peggy's home

we have stayed in both Gites and can recommend them 100%

Fantastic view & good value for money

  • 4 of 5

We received a very warm and friendly welcome from the owners, who helped to get our luggage to the gîte as it is a short distance from the parking area. The little hamlet is charming and the location affords wonderful views, particularly from the terrace of the gîte itself. The accommodation is pleasant and the gîte is very well equipped. The area has dramatic scenery and we thoroughly enjoyed our stay.

Perfection, a real paradise, wonderful hosts

  • 5 of 5

We chose Castel de Cantobre for our honeymoon. After researching for a very long time on lots and lots of websites Castel de Cantobre was the clear favourite and an easy choice. It had the ideal mix of requirements we were looking for and the very comprehensive website made our choice that much easier.

Located in a stunning part of France, Castel de Cantobre met all of our needs - quiet, wonderful views, pretty location, local walks and easy access (via a short drive) to the nearest town.

On arrival we were instantly made to feel very welcome by the simply superb owners Peggy and Lionel, the accommodation was excellent, extremely clean, fitted out to a very high standard, spacious and comfortable.

Anything we needed, be it GPS devices, recommendations/advice on local activities/places of interest or simply making us feel welcome, our hosts were always on hand to help and were a joy to speak to. Even though located in the heart of Cantobre, the location felt very private with exclusive views over the valley.

We didn't want to leave, and would definitely recommend this to others, in fact we have already on several occasions.

Some of our highlights were long walks in the gorgeous surrounding countryside, sitting on our own private balcony under the rock face eating local produce bought from the town market or watching the sunset from the shared terrace.

All in all we couldn't have picked a better place for our honeymoon. Peggy and Lionel were wonderful and made our stay even more perfect. We will remember Castel de Cantobre for the rest of our lifes.

Griffon was Great

  • 4 of 5

Griffon is a great place for a family holiday in a beautiful part of France. It's well equipped, very well maintained, a clever adaptation of an ancient building. There's loads of space, both inside and out, for families either to have fun together or for individuals to disappear for quieter moments!

The setting is stunning: at the top of an ancient hill-top village with grand views of the surrounding hills and valleys. It's just like the pictures on the owners' website but better! A plethora of butterflies and birds by day and stunning starscapes by night are things which we will never forget.

The surrounding area is perfect for "doing nothing" , walking and exploring and days out and about in the local area.

The owners, who live on site in the apartment below Griffon, were charming and unobtrusively attentive throughout our stay.

We loved our time in Cantobre and are eager to go back.

We are more than happy to recommend Griffon to anyone who is looking for an excellent base for either a great family holiday or a romantic getaway.

Beach:

A 10 minute walk from our gîtes gets you to a pebble beach on the Dourbie river. Canoeing is possible on the river but canoe hire is at Millau. For Inland water sports the Lac du Salagou is a about an hour's drive to the south and driving a little further south takes you to the beaches of the Mediterranean.

Travel:

There are several airports which serve the region, the ones that we have used are Rodez, Béziers, Montpellier, Nimes and Carcassonne, car hire is essential.

Driving time from Calais is around 10-11 hours (via Rouen or Paris) including stops and the Eurostar takes you to Paris or Lille and then you take the TGV (same station in Lille but you have to change stations in Paris) to get to Montpellier. We have a web page that shows how to get here, we can send you the link after you make your reservation.

Distances:

The village of Nant is 6 km up the Dourbie valley, the vibrant market town of Millau with its world renowned viaduct is 27 km down the valley, both are worth the drive in themselves.

Knights Templar villages are within 25 km from us and Roquefort (cheese) is about 40 km away. The Jonte and Tarn Gorges to the north are about 30 - 50 km away and Mont Aigoual (the tallest mountain around) with magnificent views and a weather station open to the public is 35 kms away.

Further Details:

Our Castel de Cantobre website has lots of information, 60 pages of photos of wildlife and the area, activities, local information, wine trips, places to visit and webcams for the valley etc.
