A spacious traditional ground floor flat with very high ceilings, in Edinburgh's popular Marchmont/Sciennes area, close to the Meadows. Scroll down for trip advisor reviews, pictures and information about the flat and every room.

Two double bedrooms, large spacious living room with bay window overlooking the flat's front garden and the tree lined street, wooden shutters on all windows, period fireplace & cornicing; large kitchen with dining table and chairs, and views to shared garden at rear; large bathroom with bath and separate shower cubicle; separate toilet; sanded pine floors. The flat can sleep four people, in two double beds. For a fifth person, a single mattress may be used for short periods in the living room or front bedroom on request. A travel cot and high chair is also available on request for babies/toddlers.

Please note the flat is suitable for non-smokers and we operate a no-smoking policy.

Rubbish is collected from on-street bins in Gladstone Terrace. Recycling collection points for paper and packaging (plastic bottles, cardboard, tins) are also on Gladstone Terrace. Glass recycling is at James Gillespie's School, further west on Warrender Park Road.

There is zone 7 residents parking on Gladstone Terrace with on-street metered parking on Gladstone Terrace, Sciennes Road and other nearby streets. Note metered parking is cheaper in zone S1 (just the other side (south) of Sciennes Road) than in zone 7, and must be paid between 08:30 to 17:30 Monday to Friday. Free parking beyond zone S1 is about 15 minutes walk from the flat.

As the flat is in a quiet location and residential staircase, it is not suitable for stag/hen weekends or other events where you plan to party.

The Rooms

Living Room

The very large, bright living room includes period decoration such as cornicing, a gas fireplace and a bay window overlooking the front garden and Gladstone Terrace. Two large leather sofas provide ample space for up to four people. There is also a coffee table, dining table with four chairs and a display cupboard.

Kitchen

The fully fitted kitchen includes a glass dining table at the window overlooking the rear shared gardens. There are ample cupboards, along with a walk-in utility at the back of the kitchen with shelving, washing machine, drying machine and microwave. Features include a fridge / freezer, gas cooker (hobs), electric fan oven and grill, iron and ironing board, and a ceiling clothes pulley for drying washing if required. The combi boiler provides instant hot water automatically, while in winter, central heating can be on timer.

Front bedroom

The front bedroom overlooks the front garden and Gladstone Terrace, with wooden shutters at the window. The double bed can be supplemented if required with a single mattress on request. Furniture includes a wardrobe, two bedside cabinets and shelving

Back bedroom

The back bedroom overlooks the rear garden and has a double bed. Two ceiling height mirrored wardrobes, chest of drawers and two bedside cabinets provide plenty of space for your personal belongings during your stay.

Bathroom

The large bathroom includes a shower cubicle and a second shower over the bath. The toilet is in a separate room off the hall.

The spacious Z-shaped hallway leads to all the rooms.

Gladstone is perfectly placed to experience the wonderful city of Edinburgh. A well-equipped, spacious and characterful apartment in a favourable location, Gladstone is within comfortable walking distance of the city centre and all its attractions. The apartment has a very pleasant outlook -both front and rear and a wonderful parkland area just over the road from the bottom of the street, which includes an excellent play park for children, together with tennis courts. The ground floor apartment is perfect for small families (2 double bedrooms) and couples alike with a choice of dining areas. For those wishing to self cater, there are convenience stores, cafes, takeaways and delis just a short walk from Gladstone.Comes highly recommended.

Wonderful Edinburgh

The flat was just perfect. Clean, large and with all amendities. Sue gave us a very warm welcome with a personal touch. Very pleasant. I hope to come back at the same spot in a few years. Groceries and beer store were close by, as well as a few take out restaurants and a park. Thanks for a wonderful time in this great city.Salut!

Great location

This apartment is in a great location. Quiet neighborhood but close to the town center. Walk to the Grassmarket in about 15 minutes. On the 1st floor and easily accessible for people who have trouble with stairs. Spacious rooms and a great kitchen fairly well equipped. Sue was a wonderful host!

Marchmont Holiday Let

The flat has a mixture of comfort and old-world charm. It is nicely decorated and was clean and tidy when we arrived.The kitchen is adequately equipped and the large sitting room has a dining table as well as plenty of comfortable seating.The location is very good: the flat is in a quiet street in Marchmont, with a very good range of local food shops within a short walk. The centre of Edinburgh is also within walking distance and bus routes pass close by if you are less active.We had problems getting into the flat when we arrived. This was quickly resolved and is unlikely to recur. Otherwise the process of booking, payment etc. was simple and trouble-free.

I created Marchmont Self Catering in 2008, when my partner and I moved in together and we kept both our flats in Edinburgh. Roseneath Apartment had been my home for about 8 years, while Gladstone Apartment had been Pete's home for about 20 years! We have both loved living here and hope that you will also love staying in the flats during your visit to Edinburgh. The area is lovely, just on the edge of the Meadows, walking distance to the city center and with an excellent bus service to get to the center quicker and to all destinations around Edinburgh, whether you are here on holiday, visiting family and friends, or for work.

Guests love staying here because the location is very convenient, close to the action but in a lovely residential area. We often have guests visiting to work or study and they say they love working at the dining table in the living room bay window, which overlooks the front garden and tree-lined street. The flat is spacious, and comfortable to stay in, close to the open spaces of the meadows and bruntsfield links, the oldest short hole golf course in the world. You have the option of a pleasant stroll to The Royal Mile and Princes street, or catch a bus - the nearest stop is only a few minutes' walk from the flat.

What makes this apartment unique

The flat has exceptionally high ceilings, so the rooms feel enormously spacious. The wooden shutters on the windows enhance security and also keep the warmth in on cold wintery nights.

The ground floor flat is ideal for families with young children, and people with limited mobility. Guests have stayed here with wheelchair users: there is a low step at the main entrance door to the tenement and no steps within the apartment. However, the shower requires a person to be mobile enough to step into the cubicle and be able to stand for a shower.

Beautiful Flat - Perfect Location



My friends and I stayed here for two weeks while attending to research work at the University of Edinburgh. The flat is located in a quiet street across from the Meadows and is walking distance to both the University and to the center of town. Local shops and some very good restaurants nearby meant that we didn't have to walk more than 5-10 minutes if we wanted to stay in the neighborhood. The flat felt like home and is very spacious with a large living room and a roomy kitchen. It has all the amenities and is well furnished including a washer and dryer for a comfortable stay. The kitchen is well equipped and even the bathroom had all the basic care products we needed in case we ran out of our own.

Excellent short break in Marchmont

Excellent welcome by keyholder, workings of apartment explained. Very good communication with owner on arrival, access etc. Apartment is spacious, warm, clean, quiet and comfy and well equipped. Everything we needed for a short s/c stay. Good shops etc close by, handy for a bus route and the wonderful Meadows. Pleasant walk to the city centre. Would stay again.

Sue was a great and very helpful host! Easy to reach and always happy to answer our questions regarding accommodation, public transportation, restaurants etc. The house is easy to reach via public transportation and well connected to the city center. It's quiet, clean and cosy. We had a great time and I'm pretty sure we will visit again!

These spacious family-friendly traditional Edinburgh flats are perfectly situated for any visit to Edinburgh, whether you are visiting on holiday or business, by yourself or with your family or friends.

Amenities for self-catering within about five minutes walk include a co-op, off-licence, newsagent and probably the best fish shop in Edinburgh, three or four fruit & veg shops and other grocery shops, and various take-aways covering Indian, Thai, Chinese, pizza, fish & chips and Italian/pasta. Other supermarkets within 10-20 minutes walk include a Sainsburys on the Meadows, and Tesco and Lidl. In the flat, we have a comprehensive folder of information on where to find everything, bus timetables and routes, and a map to help you make the most of your time here.

Edinburgh's old town, with it's intriguing and mysterious past, new town with Georgian architecture, many tourist attractions, churches, museums, galleries, festival venues, cinemas, theatres and more can be reached within half an hour walk or short bus ride. Marchmont is easy to get to and well served with buses. There is a taxi rank on Warrender Park Road and metered on-street parking if you are driving (Monday to Friday 8:30am-5:30pm).

Marchmont is a popular area to be based in Edinburgh, due to its close proximity to the city centre, frequent bus service and many amenities combined with the open spaces of Bruntsfield Links and the Meadows. Recently, more cafes with pavement tables have opened, giving the community a somewhat continental feel (there are about 8-10 cafes within five to ten minutes walk from either Apartment!).

When you are tired of visiting the many interesting and varied visitor attractions or festival events in Edinburgh, the Meadows and Bruntsfield Links offer plenty of opportunity opportunity to relax outside with a book, picnic or glass of wine. Its also the perfect place to play with friends and the family - from frisbee to football, tennis at the Edinburgh Leisure courts where you can hire everything you need, children's swings and multi-activity compounds, or golf on the short 36 hole links, where you can play for free and you need to bring your own clubs.

Alternatively, walk about 20-30 minutes south, to Blackford Hill, where you can feed the ducks at Blackford Pond, walk up the hill (or drive to the car park at the top!), visit the observatory or explore the nature trails at the Hermitage of Braid.

Further afield, Roseneath Apartment is a perfect base to explore the surrounding countryside, as it is so easy to access the city bypass. Between half to three quarters of an hour's drive brings you to fabulous beaches along the east coast, where you could walk all the way from Aberlady via Gullane to North Berwick, or discover hidden beaches near Tantallon Castle, or learn to surf at the glorious sandy expanses of Belhaven Bay. To contrast, explore the local Pentland Hills, less than half an hour's drive to find varied walks - whether by a reservoir, up steep hills with panoramic views or in the valleys, or learn to ski or snow board at Hillend Dry Ski Centre. Cultural visits that are also a short drive include Rosslyn Chapel, Crighton House, Borthwick Castle, Dalmeny House, and Hopetoun House.

No visit to Scotland is complete without seeing castles - and many are easily accessible from Edinburgh. In addition to Edinburgh Castle, why not also visit Blackness, Craigmillar or Lauriston Castles, or check out the many on offer at Historic Scotland.
