Overview

About the property

Within the grounds of an historic Grade II* listed house and close to Salisbury

Two exceptional, lovingly restored cottages in South Wiltshire’s beautiful Chalke Valley….

North and South Cottages offer an opportunity to stay somewhere quite exceptional in South Wiltshire’s highly sought after Chalke Valley where the sparkling River Ebble flows eastwards on its journey to the cathedral city of Salisbury, 8 miles away. Both cottages have been the subject of a painstakingly researched, no-expense-spared refurbishment where period features – original beams and stonework – go hand-in- hand with state-of-the-art kitchen and bathroom facilities and where understated good taste and style are evident throughout the interiors. The cottages can be reserved individually with their own private entrances and gardens but if booked jointly they are perfect for larger groups of up to ten guests who will be able to make use of South Cottage’s large, convivial dining area.

The cottages are also of historical interest, being situated within the grounds of an ancient and historic Grade II* listed house – The King’s Old Rectory, which the Abbess of Wilton handed over to Henry VI as part of the endowment of the newly founded King’s College Cambridge. Centuries later, in the 1900s, the house was visited by many well-known literary figures of the time including the poet laureate, Robert Bridges and the author Thomas Hardy. The Hollywood actress, Greta Garbo is said to have been photographed by Sir Cecil Beaton sitting on the bridge over the Ebble in the Rectory’s garden.

ACCOMMODATION:

North and South Cottages are approached through their gardens from a large, gated gravel driveway and parking area which are bounded on one side by a garden wall, separating the cottages from the grounds of the main house. Furnished and equipped to extremely high specifications, both cottages have an uncluttered, contemporary feel. A fireplace with woodburning stove in each cottage creates a welcoming atmosphere and means they are very suitable for year-round letting.

Entrance up stone steps from the garden into an open plan living room comprising a sitting area with inglenook fireplace containing a woodburning stove and double sofa bed for alternative sleeping, a dining area and a smart Harvey Jones, fitted kitchen with induction hob, oven and grill. Carpeted stairs lead directly into a spacious bedroom with kingsize bed; large fitted cupboard for clothes storage. En suite shower room/wc with big walk-in cubicle and ‘monsoon’ shower.

Attractive garden laid out as a formal parterre with flower beds, gravel pathways and box hedging. Sitting area by the cottage with garden table and chairs.

Forming part of the Cranborne Chase Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, the surrounding countryside can justly claim to be some of the finest in southern England. Walkers, riders and cyclists are particularly well served by the multitude of footpaths, bridle ways and cycle routes which run along the valley while a walk up to the old Ox Drove on the chalk ridge above will be richly rewarded by the sweeping views across the surrounding downland as far as the Dorset coast in the distance.

If you’re exploring the area by car, there is an almost limitless number of attractions to see. Within 30 to 40 minutes’ drive are Salisbury with its superb cathedral, Wilton House, Stonehenge, Longleat and The New Forest. A little further, the Georgian city of Bath and Dorset’s World Heritage coastline are within comfortable reach for a day’s outing.
