About the property

Ground floor independent Gite with stunning views and close to Lagrasse

The property is aimed at couples and those seeking peace and quiet with quality accommodation, furnishings and equipment. Though as stated the property can accommodate four people. There are absolutely NO additional charges and 'end of stay, cleaning is included.

The gite comprises the ground-floor part of a converted winery on a working wine Domaine set in 3 acres on a Cobieres mountainside. It has stunning views, gardens, a small wine-producing vineyard and pine forest. It is peacefully situated on the Domaine, away from the roads, but with easy access to nearby Thezan village, Carcassonne, Cathar castles, medieval Lagrasse, Narbonne, Perpignan and the Mediterranean beaches and etangs; even the ski slopes of the Pyrenees. Log burning stove and background heating makes it suitable for off-season lets.

The interior features original stonewalling, open plan dining area, well equipped American-style kitchen, and lounge with patio doors leading to furnished patio area. Tastefully furnished with period and modern furniture it has a romantic double bedroom, and a second bedroom which can accommodate 2 further guests. The gite has its own independent road access which assures guests’ privacy.

Guests are invited to share the superb in-ground pool, [11 x 5.5 metres], which enjoys the sun for the whole day! It is also thermostatically heated [28 degrees], which benefits those wishing to take holidays outside the normal spring/summer seasons. The water treatment is by the latest saline methods, which leaves the skin feeling so much nicer and avoids all the unpleasant effects of standard chlorination. It is of constant 1.5 metre depth and has Roman steps for ease of access. The pool also offers magnificent views across the surrounding countryside.

A high-walled courtyard contains a separate spring and small stream an original wine press and collecting vessels. In this secluded and private spot guests will also have the private use of our heated [36 degrees] hydrotherapy spa.

Views from the house and gardens extend across the vineyards and valley to the distant hills, chateaux and mountains.

All of the grounds are available for use. Within the pine forest is a shaded arbor for picnics or meals. Behind the house the unoccupied hillsides and forests cater for the more energetic walkers.

The accommodation is not suitable for children or pets and is non-smoking. We offer discounts for 'couples'.

About Paule Maria Hall

Following our careers in Government service both in the UK and Brussels Mike and I had always dreamed of retirement in France which we have now been enjoying for the last 12 years. We loved our life in the UK and lived in Essex before we came here. My passion was breeding and showing my cats and both of us were auction addicts in both the UK and Brussels. We came here on holiday and made up our minds we wanted to live here in the Aude.

We now belong to various associations here in France and spend a lot of time enjoying local life. I paint (my pictures are in the gite) and enjoy cooking. We find that our home keeps us busy too! We love dining out and have a good knowledge of local restaurants. If it is a nice day we take off to the beach or perhaps a riverside picnic with the dog. We also have a passion for open top cars. We enjoy our pets we have a dog, cats, ornamental chickens and a pet pig. The chickens and pig can be visited if you walk up to the wood!

Paule Maria Hall purchased this apartment in 2004

Why Paule Maria Hall chose Thézan-des-Corbières

We had been coming to the area on holiday for quite a few years before purchasing the house. We decided just to have a look round. This was the first and only house we saw and we fell in love with it. We did not want to be in a village but did not want to be too isolated. The views from the house are amazing. The domaine is a working domaine but it is peaceful and we really only see anyone around when the vines are being worked on or harvested. The house is in two separate halves with completely separate access to each. We live upstairs and for us this worked well. When friends come to stay they are totally independent. We also use downstairs for entertaining during the off season months. We love the fact that the house in only a quick shoot down the motorway to the Spanish border. Close to Carcassonne and Narbonne and of course, it is in the beautiful Corbieres which we adore.

A tranquil, delightful setting amongst the vines

  • 4 of 5

The air is fragrant and the views very special from this property. Mike and Paule are delightful hosts and it was a pleasure to meet them and chat about life in the Languedoc. They were generous and helpful with advice for visits around the area and that wonderful bottle of wine for the arrival at the property. Their arrival details made it easy to find the house - keep a eye out for the stone cathar cross which marks the path to the house which is set into the hillside.

The views are stunning and it was wonderful to sit out and breathe in the warm balmy air. The pool was heated and great to unwind after a day visiting the other charms of the area. Leucate plage is a treat and within 45 min drive of the house. The supermarket at Sigean is big and contains all the lovely foodie treats for the stay. It was lovely to sit outside and have a BBQ whilst drinking in the charms of this natural setting. The cats were so cute and the pet pig Onslow was a real charmer! Thanks again for having us to stay.

Owner's Response: Thankyou for taking the time to write your review. We enjoyed meeting you both and hope we can welcome you both back to Domaine du Sault in the future. We know one small blue cat is missing you both. We found him waiting for your barbecue to be lit at 5.30 pm the day you left! Hope you both enjoyed the rest of your holiday.

Ideal relaxing & picturesque location

  • 5 of 5

Easy access from Carcassone to Narbonne autoroute, the 1st impression is 'What a view'. The charming welcome and explanation of the facilities helped to speed up the settling in and opening of the relaxing wine, sitting at the garden table in the sunshine. There are well-stocked supermarkets in the nearby towns, and excellent restaurants too. I would recommend pizzas from le Carignan in Saint Laurent de la Cabrerisse, L' Heureux Tour in Fabrezan, and there's an Italian family run restaurant (with buffalo farm) at Pradelles en Val, which is accessed via some of the most beautiful scenery around. Good idea to prebook for this one. Narbonne & the coast aren't too far away either. Back at the gite, enjoy the view, the pool, the pretty little wood and feel 'France'.

Relaxing at the Domaine du Sault

  • 4 of 5

Our fourth visit to the lovely Domaine du Sault: we love its tranquil rural setting and the view acros the valley from the outside dining and barbecue area. The gite is well equipped with everything we need and the large pool in its garden setting is a real plus - we swam every day. A car is a necessity for shopping although we enjoy walking in the woods behind the property. Nearby there are fascinating towns and vlllages to visit and the coast and restaurants are an easy drive away. Mike and Paule are on hand to deal with any queries. We look forward to our next visit.

Recharging, relaxing holiday Summer 2016

  • 5 of 5

Arriving at dusk, we were grateful for the directions given. The domaine had a welcoming peaceful ambiance which was very much needed after a long day on the roads. Upon arrival we found in the property a welcoming bottle of wine and snacks.

The property is very well equipped with every mod con and excellent wi-fi which is a god send for any teenager! We found the property to be clean and tidy and freshly decorated. The kitchen is a good size with everything provided. The seating area indoor and outdoor, comes with an amazing view providing a relaxing, restful atmosphere after a busy day spent sight seeing. When going down to the pool to our surprise it was much larger than any pool we have had at previous property rentals. Plenty of sunbeds and a heated pool which was much appreciated. The property is located down a long private road, which should you wish to, lends itself to a relaxing quiet evening stroll overlooking vineyards. The local supermache is a ten minute drive away and is very well stocked for all your needs. The owners are friendly and informative and gave excellent recommendations for local activities, attractions and restaurants. We have recommended this property to family and friends as it is an ideal place to have a relaxing holiday away for it all with an authentic French ambiance.

I love this place so visit annually. It is beautifully furnished..has everything for inside/outside dining. Beautiful, ever changing views of countryside yet within reach of many towns..Carcassonne/Narbonne beach and local villages with high class and local cuisine.

The well kept large pool is fabulous to exercise/relax in.

With unobtrusive owner nearby this place is ideal both for experienced and inexperience visitors to France.

This is an intensive wine-growing region with formally documented Routes des Vins. Chateaux and Domaines abound for the tastings and purchases of your choice. It is also Cathar country, steeped in rich and often violent history. Many of the old Cathar strongholds such as Peyrepeteuse, and Queribus remain. Set along the Routes des Cathares, they are within easy driving distance. and are well worth visiting. A little further afield, but easy for a day visit is Rennes le Chateau, which features in the recent docu-novel ‘The Holy Blood and the Holy Grail’... Or you could just drive into the ever changing scenery of the nearby mountains and hillsides. They are riddled with gorges and other interesting geography, and the roads remain unpopulated. The very popular mediaeval city of Lagrasse, with its monk-inhabited abbey is also nearby. If you should need it, river swimming is available at nearby Ribaute and other places. There are plentiful fishing, horse riding, walking and cycling facilities.

Finally, the ski slopes of the lower Pyrenees are also accessible on a daily basis, offering good low-cost facilities.

Shopping and eating

The nearest major towns are Narbonne and the fairytale city of Carcassone, used in the filming of Robin Hood Prince of Thieves. Both are within easy reach for exploration and shopping. Narbonne is the nearer of the two [about 15 miles] and has an excellent fish, meat and vegetable market daily, and an extensive weekly general market. Perpignan is about 45 minutes away, and the Spanish border and cross-border shopping facilities, 60 minutes away.

At the top end of the scale, there is within 15 minutes drive l'Auberge du Vieux Puits, a 3 star Michelin restaurant. However in addition to the local bar/restaurant, there are many other good quality, but less expensive restaurants in the surrounding villages of Villeseque, Lagrasse, Fabrezan and Lezignan [10 miles] which has two good supermarkets and a weekly market. Slightly further afield at Narbonne and Carcassonne and even Perpignan there is an even wider choice. From December through to March there are regular truffle markets in nearby Talairan. Throughout the year one can usually find markets specialising in gourmet regional foods such as foie gras, cheeses, pates, honey and all usually offer a good selection of wines to taste and even buy!
