Visiting Cortona:

Cortona is a treasure to visit again and again; seated on a hilltop 1600 feet above sea level, this ancient Etruscan town dates back to 800 BC. It is 9 miles from Lake Trasimeno, the largest lake in central Italy, where Hannibal defeated an entire Roman legion in 217 BC. From slightly later times, you will find one of the earliest Franciscan monasteries founded (in 1211) by Saint Francis of Assisi,. Other treasures of art and architecture include beautiful churches, such as 'Madonna del Calcinaio', designed by Francesco di Giorgio Martini (1485); and the Church of the Patron Saint of Cortona - La Chiesa di Santa Margherita - protected by the Medici Fortress, La Fortezza di Girifalco. Don’t miss the Museum, il Museo Diocesano - offering works by Fra Angelico, Piero della Francesca and his pupil Luca Signorelli, a native of Cortona.

The Town of Cortona itself is a lively town full of delightful shops selling selling locally products, wines, hand-made pottery, textiles, antique furniture, objets d’arts, designer clothes and jewelery. Of course there are plenty of inviting bars, restaurants and trattorias offering great local dishes and excellent regional wines. During the summer months the town puts on a series of open-air concerts, opera and chamber music ensembles, theatrical productions, an international photo festival (Cortona On The Move) plus a variety of popular entertainment events and food festivals.

Cortona is 65 miles south of Florence and 120 miles north of Rome, 40 miles to Siena and nearby Montalcino, and 15 miles from Montepulciano. Only 60 miles away is Arezzo where you will want to see the Piero della Francesca murals in the church of San Francesco, depicting the Battle of Anghiari and the True Stations of the Cross, as well as Perugia, Pienza and much more.

Giusi and Dario are perfectly delightful hosts! (and a hard-working,

multi-talented couple, as well). My friends and I felt fortunate to have stayed

in their lovely 3 bedrooms/3 bathrooms cottage located in the hills of Tuscany.

The entire property is meticulously maintained and we felt instantly comfortable

as soon as we agreed upon which bedroom to stay in...which wasn't too difficult

because all of the accomodations were equally charming! The kitchen and outdoor

patio were great common areas and each bedroom felt spacious and private. We

enjoyed hiking the property and seeing views of Lake Transimeno. And we always

had good appetites! Giusi was kind to give us a few Italian cooking lessons in

her authentic kitchen/classroom. In fact, we're still salivating over the meals

we shared together at the long table she so gracefully adorned with her garden

flowers! Yes, it's difficult to not want to move-in perminately! I stayed here

10 years ago and as recently as last March of 2014. I've always rented a car so

as to venture out on easy day trips to Siena, Assisi, Cortona, Pienza and

Deruta...and I love taking trains to Rome and Florence from the nearby station

in Camucia. But, honestly, it's the days thatvwe decide to not leave Giusi and

Dario's, that are the days I re-discover what Italy is all about! Eating,

laughing, and cultivating those lasting friendships over delicious food and good

conversation - Well, that and the olive oil! Seriously, I highly recommend

putting this particular place on your bucket list! These days, there are many

different rental options to chose from online. But, knowing this particular

family first-hand for many years now and observing the property only becoming

more beautiful by all their loving touches...Well, I can sincerely and

confidently encourage travellers to discover the true heart of Italy for

yourselves! And I'm sure you'll dream of returning again and again, as I always

seem to do, as soon as I have to leave this dreamy place.

Toscana Fantastica

  • 5 of 5

My family and my parents enjoyed a wonderful stay at Toscana Fantastica in August. Giusi and Dario's Tuscan villa is truly a magical spot and they are so very gracious and accommodating. The location high up in the hills was so quiet and beautiful, especially at sunset, and the home and gardens are so perfectly appointed. I was celebrating a special birthday and Giusi prepared an amazing dinner for us on the terrace that will be remembered always. We so enjoyed our time there and look forward to a return visit one day.
