Overview

About the property

Ideal for family. Russell Square tube, bus or walk to London's best attractions

The apartment occupies the top two floors of a Georgian townhouse in Bloomsbury, a quiet, elegant corner of central London, close to Russell Square, Kings Cross-St Pancras and Chancery Lane tube stations. You are in the centre of London, close enough to walk to most of the places you'll want to visit, short bus or tube rides to other tourist must-sees, but this is a quiet, secure part of town with little night time traffic or noise. The most common phrases in our visitor's book are 'great location' and 'we'll be back'.

Built in the 1790s, this historic building boasts all the luxuries of a modern home, including a fully-equipped kitchen (washer/drier for clothes, dishwasher, oven, hob, microwave, fridge/freezer plus lots of pots, pans and utensils for cooking), satellite TV and DVD player, free wi-fi, power shower and modern bathroom.

The spacious living room is light and airy with two large sofas plus a chair that converts into a comfortable single bed. The TV has multiple satellite channels including Sky Sports & Sky Cinema and there are speakers for your MP3 player, a dvd player and a few DVDs. Our bookshelf is stuffed with books which feature London. guidebooks for London and maps for you to take with you as you explore the city. We also have a few toys for young children and games. Two large sash windows with Georgian wooden shutters look out to the historic street below.

The adjoining kitchen is light, spacious and has a dining table and six chairs. It has everything you would expect in a modern kitchen; oven, hob, large refrigerator, separate freezer, dishwasher, washing machine (with tumble drier function), microwave oven, kettle, toaster and two coffee makers. The kitchen has plenty of crockery and cutlery, cooking utensils, baking trays, saucepans, a wok, pots, pans and everything you need to make a family supper and eat in. We also have a flask and some sandwich boxes for you to make lunch and take it out with you (ideal if you are feeding a family).

A short but steep flight of stairs leads up to two bedrooms and a bathroom. The bathroom has a bath and separate shower, with plentiful hot water. The basin has a mirror over it and the heated towel rail keeps the bathroom warm and cosy.

The large master bedroom has a king-size double bed and a single bed with large wardrobe, feature mirror and Victorian chest of drawers. It can sleep three people, but is usually used for two adults.

The second bedroom has two single beds (adult sized) with Victorian chest of drawers, hanging space for clothes and mirror. Both bedrooms have 'black-out' blinds so that you are not woken by early morning sun.

A cot and highchair are available on request. Bed linen and towels included.

A hairdryer, an iron and ironing board are provided, along with an umbrella.

A good choice of restaurants are within a 5 minute walk and there is a large Waitrose supermarket 10 minutes walk away in The Brunswick Shopping Centre. A smaller Co-Op supermarket is a convenient 3 minute walk.

This is an ideal holiday home for a family or friends looking to explore London from a central base.

John Street is a six minute walk from Russell Square tube station (subway) or Chancery Lane tube station. We are a 15 minute walk to Kings Cross-St Pancras stations (tube and Eurostar trains to France). We will send you full directions when you book. Just let us know which airport or train station you arrive at.

Getting Here - Air: It is an easy journey from London Heathrow Airport to John St, as the local tube (subway or underground) station runs directly to the airport. From there it's a 6 minute walk to the apartment. From other London airports (Gatwick, Stansted, Luton or City airports), you can take the train into the centre of London and make a short tube or taxi journey to the apartment. We will send you full directions when you book.

Getting Here - Rail: John St is a fifteen minute walk from the mainline stations, Kings Cross and St Pancras International where the Eurostar service from Paris, Lille and Brussels now departs. Euston Station is a few minutes further away. It is a short bus ride from London Bridge and Waterloo stations. Paddington is a tube ride away.

No hidden extras: Price quoted includes VAT (sales tax), bed linen, towels and cleaning. There are no hidden extras to pay to the property owner.

UPDATE: January 2016 - we have updated our wi-fi connection and we now have faster wifi (35mbps) in the living room, kitchen and also upstairs in the bedrooms.

ALLERGY SUFFERERS: we have blinds (no curtains), wooden floors in the bedrooms (the only carpet is in the hallway) and can supply feather-free bedding on request.

HOW MANY PEOPLE ARE COMING? - we have six sleeping places but as we only have one bathroom we do not let the apartment to six people. If you are a party of five, please state if you would prefer to have three people sharing the largest bedroom (in one double and one single bed) OR one person sleeping in the living room. We will only make up beds for the number of people you tell us are staying.

If you have any questions about the apartment, the local area or London generally, please get in touch by email or phone.

About Melissa Mackey

This apartment is owned by Electric Marketing, a database marketing company set up in 1991 by Melissa Mackey. Electric Marketing's offices are on the ground and first floors of the building, the apartment is on the second and third floors. You will share a front door and hallway with our office team during weekdays, but no one will visit the apartment during your stay unless you come down to the ground floor and ask us for help. This means that there is always someone on site to help you if you have any problems eg light bulb needs replacing or something is broken. Equally we are aware that most people want to be allowed to enjoy their holiday in private and we won't visit unless there is a serious issue that needs to be fixed. If you have a problem at the weekend, our contact phone numbers are in a black folder of useful information in the living room.

Why Melissa Mackey chose Farringdon

There is no doubt that John Street in Bloomsbury is a smart part of town, close to Grays Inn and full of barristers' chambers and legal firms. As well as the lawyers, our near neighbours are the Charles Dickens Museum, noted actors and artists as well as the ITV news studios on Grays Inn Road.

John Street and adjoining Doughty Street are steeped in history as these houses have stood for 250 years.

It is a safe and secure part of London, walking distance to the West End and to the City of London, close to shops and restaurants and yet quiet at night so that you can sleep easily.

If you are coming to London for reasons other than pleasure, John Street is walking distance from Great Ormond Street Hospital, University College Hospital, British Library, London School of Economics and University College London.

What makes this apartment unique

You are in the centre of London, close enough to walk to most of the places you'll want to visit, short bus or tube rides to other tourist must-sees, but this is a quiet, secure part of town with little night time traffic or noise. The most common phrases in our visitor's book are 'great location' and 'we'll be back'.

Notes:
This apartment is on the second and third floor of a 200-year old house. If you have difficulty with stairs, it really isn't suitable as there are two flights to the entrance and a further flight to the bedrooms. Please try not to bring a car, the parking in London is awful. Public transport is excellent with underground (tube) stations Russell Square and Chancery Lane both 7 mins walk away. Buses are 3 mins walk away and of course, famous London black taxicabs are always available. You can walk to Covent Garden, St Pauls and many of the major sites, shops and entertainment in the West End. There is no outside space with this property, but for children, at the end of the street there is Coram's Fields, a delightful park with swings, slides, sand pit, farm animals and astroturf football pitches. For adults, Russell Square is a pleasant green space with a café, fountains and wildlife to provide a respite from life in Europe's largest city.

Bloomsbury apartment

  • 5 of 5

We recently spent 6 days at this apartment and found it excellent. It was great having a kitchen given prices in London and the supermarket is quite close. The beds were really confortable and it was a quiet retreat at the end of the day. We had our 3 children with us and found the apartment much roomier than I expected. The owners were helpful and let us stay until 2.00pm on the day we were leaving. Just be warned that there quite a lot of steps!

Roomy flat in Bloomsbury

  • 5 of 5

Our family of five enjoyed a very good stay at this Bloomsbury flat. Close to the British Museum, the Russell Square tube station, a large Sainsburys, and bus lines to both the City and S Kensington, this clean flat offered a comfy bed for each of my kids, high ceilings, and good value.

We had an issue with a small appliance which the management resolved within twenty-four hours.

Seemless Process

  • 5 of 5

Loved how big the apartment was, plenty of room for us to dine/relax together and then retire to private spaces at night. Location is good and an easy walk to 2 tube stations and within walking distance of many attractions. The overall booking/checkin/checkout process was smooth with no problems. The kitchen is well stocked for cooking and having a washer is a plus! Beds/pillows were comfortable. The apartment is on the top floor, so there are a number of stairs which would be a problem for those with limited mobility. We did buy a portable fan (which we left behind) to circulate the air as a few nights got warm, but overall we were very pleased and would stay here again if we were to return.

Great to explore London

  • 4 of 5

Melissa was very helpful in greeting us and helping us get settled in (and very helpful when we locked ourselves out!). The flat was a great launching point to explore London. Shopping and restaurants close by for necessities and a comfortable walking distance for me and my family to get to two underground stations. I have no hesitation in recommending this place to others.

Lovely apartment, central London, lots of stairs.

  • 5 of 5

Just returned from a week using this apartment in April 2017.

The apartment is very nice. New kitchen. Very nice bathroom with a powerful (but small) shower. Clean, bright and warm feeling. VERY comfortable queen sized mattress. Our girls enjoyed the two single beds in the other bedroom. Overall this was perfect for our week in a London and we really enjoyed our stay. Absolutely no regrets about this apartment.

A few items to be aware of. It is a good 7-10 minute walk to a tube. No big deal for adults, but a bit long for our 6 year old. I could also imagine it would feel a lot longer if you get caught in the rain, which fortunately we didn't experience.

The bedrooms are up a steep flight of stairs. The separation is nice when the kids go to sleep before the adults, but the staircase is very steep. That could make some parents nervous with little children.

There is a fabulous park for children (Coram's Fields) only 5 minutes away, and that is a great bonus.

The area has a number of options for groceries (not M&S), which fit our needs nicely. Also some nice pubs and Indian options within a block or two.

Again, we had a wonderful time and would use this apartment again when in London.

Owner's Response: Thank you for taking the time to write this review. We're glad you enjoyed your stay. As the apartment is in a 200 year old listed building, there is nothing we can do about the stairs! For the benefit of others who may be reading this, there is an M&S Simply Food, right by Chancery Lane tube station, about 8 minutes walk. I will add this shop to the Guide To The Local Area folder in the apartment. There are a number of useful bus routes which are a 2 minute walk from the apartment. Children under the age of 11 travel free on London buses and a ride on the upper deck of a big red bus is quite a fun thing to do. You can take the 38, 55 or 19 bus into the West End from the bus stop at the end of John Street on Theobalds Road or the 17 bus route on Grays Inn Road will take you to St Paul's Cathedral and the financial district (City of London). There is a more detailed guide to local bus routes in the information folder in the apartment.
