About this property

RIVERBANK COTTAGE, dogs welcome, walk to town along the beautiful Estuary....

Reviewers say that the best thing about our cottage is that it is a real home from home as well as being perfectly located for a short stroll to town along the picturesque Bideford Estuary. The cottage is fully equipped with lots to keep children entertained & is comfortably furnished. It is practical for dogs too, with hard flooring laid throughout the spacious downstairs. There is a little courtyard which is a complete sun trap. The driveway has space for one car & there is plenty more free street parking nearby if needed.

There are many pubs, restaurants & shops within an easy level walk from the cottage, with some of these delightful venues overlooking the estuary.

The cottage sleeps 4-6 in two bedrooms (& a sofa bed in the dining room). There is also a travel cot & high chair available. The cottage has a welcoming log burner in the spacious lounge which is well equipped with toys & board games as well as a SmartTV, DVD player & Wii console.

Riverbank Cottage dates from the 1890's & is a stone built terraced cottage in a row of former Estuary workers' cottages. Its position is unique in that this quaint cottage is only a 10 minute walk along the Estuary from the centre of Bideford & yet it is situated in a very quiet no through road set away from the hustle & bustle of the town..

There is a separate dining room with a dining table that seats 4 - 6. The dining room features an attractive stone fireplace; there is a double sofa bed available for extra guests (please note bedding / towels are not supplied for the sofa bed or travel cot).

The kitchen is equipped with washer dryer, microwave, electric oven & gas hob. Items supplied for your stay include a coffee plunger, tea towels, washing up liquid & cloths etc. The kitchen opens out into a little court yard with a patio table & chairs; there is a barbecue available for guest use too.

Upstairs is a master bedroom with a king size bed & an extra TV. The second bedroom has two single beds which can be made up as a king size bed if required. The bathroom is spacious with a bath & power shower over the bath. The cottage is warm & comfortable with gas central heating, constant hot water by way of a combi boiler plus the gorgeous log burner.

We supply all bedding & towels for the two bedrooms.

Outdoor games such as cricket, badminton & racquet games are supplied for guests' use. There is a beautiful park (Victoria Park) with a lido for young children which is only minutes away on foot towards the town centre. Or you can walk or hire bikes to go along the nearby Tarka Trail. Only 2 miles away is the lovely little sandy beach at Instow. There are also surf boards & 3 body boards at the cottage that guests are welcome to use if they want to go to the great water sports beach at Westward Ho! which is only a five minute drive away, or both Saunton Sands & Croyde are nearby.

A lovely cottage in a lovely place
Such a lovely cottage it was very cosy and the perfect location where we were able to visit family, and take our four legged family with us. It had all the comforts of home, and we can't wait to return in the near future .

Better than a B&B
We were on a golfing holiday with friends who had booked a b&b for the duration of their stay. Renting an entire property was a much better alternative, as we were able to relax and watch tv from a comfortable settee after a rain swept round. Dry and securely store our clubs. The accommodation was a home from home and only a £1.50 bus ride from where our friends were staying in Westward Ho!

About the host

Host profile image
We are a family with dogs who love outdoor pursuits including surfing, kite surfing, body boarding, canoeing, cycling and walking. We have always loved Devon but work commitments keep us in the south east so we bought our cottage in 2015 primarily for our own use but decided to offer it to others to enjoy when we are unable to.

Why they chose this property

Location, location location! This cottage is set in a tranquil no through road at the edge of the estuary and yet it is only a five to ten minute stroll into the quaint little 'white town' of Bideford either along the estuary or through beautiful Victoria Park. It has the benefit of its own driveway for parking.

It dates from the 1890's and is built of traditional stone with two beautiful fireplaces. The large stone chimney breast is an ornamental fireplace in the dining room and the lounge fireplace boasts a cosy log burner. Both these features have been restored by us having been covered over with plaster in recent years.
We love the blend of character that comes with an old property along with the modern comforts of a good power shower, gas central heating and a log burner for the colder months!

Both of us have previous links to the West Country and Bideford captured our hearts as it offers the unique mix of beautiful countryside as well as a thriving town with shops and a pannier market and also quirky and quaint pubs and restaurants.

What makes this property unique

The cottage's great location means that it benefits from:
- being only a stroll away from shops, pubs, restaurants and an array of takeaways
- less than a 10 min drive to Westward Ho! beach and its water sports
- sits on the Tarka Trail (beautiful walks and cycle rides)
- within an easy walk or cycle of both Appledore and Instow
- learn to surf or kite surf at local schools in the area
