About the property

2 bed cottage with log burner in fab central location with driveway parking

Our reviewers say that the best thing about our cottage is that it is a real home from home as well being perfectly located for a short stroll to town along the picturesque Bideford Estuary. Our home is fully equipped with lots to keep the children entertained and is comfortably furnished. It is practical for dogs too, with new hard flooring laid throughout the spacious downstairs. There is a little courtyard which is a complete sun trap (when the sun is out!). The driveway has space for one car and there is plenty more free street parking nearby if needed.

Riverbank Cottage dates from the 1890's and is a stone built terraced cottage in a row of former Estuary workers' cottages. Its position is unique in that this quaint cottage is only a 10 minute walk along the Estuary from the centre of Bideford and yet it is situated in a very quiet no through road set away from the hustle and bustle of the town. All the pubs, restaurants and shops are an easy level walk from the cottage, with some of these delightful venues overlooking the estuary.

Sleeping 4-6 in two bedrooms plus travel cot and high hair available, this characterful cottage has a welcoming log burner in the spacious lounge which is well equipped with toys and games as well as TV, DVD player and Wii console.

There is a separate dining room with a dining table that seats 4 - 6. The dining room features an attractive stone fireplace; there is a double sofa bed available for extra guests (please note bedding / towels not supplied for sofa bed or travel cot). NB Using the sofa bed may restrict numbers around the table unless it is put away during the day.

The kitchen is equipped with washer dryer, microwave, electric oven and gas hob. Everything is supplied for your stay including tea, coffee, sugar, condiments, tea towels etc. The kitchen opens out into a little court yard with a patio table and chairs; there is a barbecue available for guest use too.

Upstairs is a master bedroom with a king size bed and an extra TV. The second bedroom has two single beds which can be made up as a king size bed if required. The bathroom is spacious with a bath and power shower over the bath. The cottage is warm and comfortable with gas central heating, constant hot water by way of a combi boiler plus the gorgeous log burner.

We supply all bedding and towels for the two bedrooms. We do not charge any extra for gas or electricity.

Outdoor games such as cricket, badminton and racquet games are supplied for guests' use. There is a beautiful park (Victoria Park) with a lido for young children which is only minutes away on foot towards the town centre. Or you can walk or hire bikes to go along the nearby Tarka Trail. Only 2 miles away is the lovely little sandy beach at Instow. There are also 3 surf boards and 3 body boards at the cottage that guests are welcome to use if they want to go 3 miles up the road to the great water sports beach at Westward Ho!, or both Saunton Sands and Croyde are nearby.

About Juliet & Alex

We are a big family with dogs who love outdoor pursuits including surfing, kite surfing, body boarding, canoeing, cycling and walking. We have always loved Devon but work commitments keep us in the city so we bought our cottage in 2015 primarily for our own use but decided to offer it to others to enjoy when we are unable to.

Juliet & Alex purchased this cottage in 2015

Why Juliet & Alex chose Bideford

Location, location location! This cottage is set in a tranquil no through road at the edge of the estuary and yet it is only a five to ten minute stroll into the quaint little 'white town' of Bideford either along the estuary or through beautiful Victoria Park. It has the benefit of its own driveway for parking.

It dates from the 1890's and is built of traditional stone with two beautiful fireplaces. The large stone chimney breast is an ornamental fireplace in the dining room and the lounge fireplace boasts a cosy log burner. Both these features have been restored by us having been covered over with plaster in recent years.

We love the blend of character that comes with an old property along with the modern comforts of a good power shower, gas central heating and a log burner for the colder months!

Both of us have previous links to the West Country and Bideford captured our hearts as it offers the unique mix of beautiful countryside as well as a thriving town with shops and a pannier market and also quirky and quaint pubs and restaurants.

What makes this cottage unique

The cottage's great location means that it benefits from:

- being only a stroll away from shops, pubs, restaurants and an array of takeaways

- less than a 10 min drive to Westward Ho! beach and its water sports

- sits on the Tarka Trail (beautiful walks and cycle rides)

- within an easy walk or cycle of both Appledore and Instow

- learn to surf or kite surf at local schools in the area

Lovely dog friendly accommondation

  • 5 of 5

Riverbank Cottage is in a great location, just a 15 / 20 minute gentle stroll along the bank of the river into town or via Victoria Park. The cottage is beautifully decorated and well maintained and has a plethora of information guides and books for the adults and games for children to play. Plenty of car parking, including a private space in front of the cottage, and very quiet at night time. The kitchen is well appointed and the beds are super comfy. We loved our holiday and Riverbank Cottage contributed hugely to a nice, relaxing break.

Riverbank

We had a wonderful time. The cottage was extremely well-equipped, although Kleenex would have been appreciated. I have a small complaint about the bed in the master. The

too soft foam mattress was lumpy and, being arthritic, I had a very sore back every morning.

Owner's Response: Thanks for leaving a review Christine. I’m afraid that we don’t normally supply Kleenex tissues, we only supply toilet rolls and kitchen rolls. However, the supermarket is only five minutes away if you need anything. Sorry to hear that the mattress did not suit you with your arthritis. It is difficult to please everyone with a mattress as it’s such a personal choice. The bed does have a good quality memory foam mattress which we and other guests have found to be very comfortable, but this is an individual choice of course. We are pleased you had a good stay overall.

Great little cottage

  • 4 of 5

What a lovely little place to stay! So nice to walk in to a bottle wine and chocolate biscuits. A nice touch , thank you!

I was mainly visiting relatives in Bideford And Torrington so was ideally placed. The coastal path is nearby and 5 minutes drive to Morrisons for supplies. Also 5 minutes in the opposite direction to get back on the A39 so great location for visiting other parts of North Devon.

The cottage is well equipped, beds comfortable. If you took children a Wii is included so if weather inclement something to keep them busy! Also lots of board games. My friend and I played one evening during our 3 night stay which was fun.

Beds comfortable, hot water constant all kitchen equipment you need.

Our only niggle was that we couldn't quite get the thermostat to obey our commands! So although warm most of the time there were times we felt a little chilly first thing in the morning, having stayed in March. Very quiet location for peaceful sleep and yet so near popular locations for daytime visits. Can recommend Belluno Italian in Bideford and The Seagate and Beaver Inn in Appledore for meals. Also John's cafe/Deli/bakery in Instow afters beach walk. Fabulous cakes!! I'd certainly return again to Riverside Cottage.

Owner's Response: Thanks so much for leaving us a nice review. Yes the heating thermostat is a little confusing because it has two temp settings and you need to twiddle the right one for it to respond! The heating is left on constant as is the hot water as you said so our guests should be cosy and warm all the time. It's just the thermostat ring that needs adjusting to suit. Plus there is the lovely log burner too!
