"Everyone had a great pride, a great pride, a high sense of himself, of himself as individuals and of himself as a community, if immediately after the earthquake they wanted and could miraculously reconstruct those cities, with those topographies, with those baroque architectures: scenographic, daring, dazzling concretisations of dreams, realizations of fantastic utopias. " Vincenzo Consolo, essayist

Noto is a little jewel of Sicilian Baroque. A beautiful village perched on a plateau overlooking the valley Asinaro.

Important center Sicilian, Roman, Byzantine and then Arab, was destroyed in its full splendor by the earthquake of 1693, but thanks to the wise reconstruction, Noto has become a magnificent city of art, UNESCO heritage together with Caltagirone, Militello, Catania, Modica , Palazzolo, Ragusa and Scicli.

The extraordinary beauty of Noto, and other cities rebuilt after the earthquake, characterizes the whole Val di Noto. For the reconstruction they were called great architects, almost all trained in Rome and in fact the source of inspiration is that of the Roman Baroque, albeit revisited. The result exceeded expectations and the reconstruction started a wonderful job even if different from city to city: from baroque dark gray of Catania, where it was used as lava stone, the luminous architecture of Noto from honey-colored tint.

The medieval city, of which there are remains of the walls and the castle, corresponds to the ancient Neto. The installation of the new town is rather to Baroque, based on wide streets and straight interspersed with squares with steps overlooked by churches and palaces.

The three main squares, Immaculate square with the homonym church; then there is the City Hall Square surrounded by four buildings: the town hall, the Church of the Holy Savior (1791-1801), the Bishop's Palace and the magnificent cathedral of St. Nicholas (1771), which dominates a impressive staircase. In XVI May Square arise instead the church of St. Domenico (1727), with curved façade, and the Dominican monastery with a beautiful ashlar portal. In the church of the Crucifix it is preserved the statue of Our Lady of the Snow carved by the sculptor Francesco Laurana in 1471.

In addition to Noto and the other baroque towns, for lovers of ancient civilizations, not to be missed, even in the warm spring days, a trip in the surrounding areas where archaeological sites are preserved very valuable: the Greek city of Eloro and Camarina in greek theater of Palazzolo Acreide; from the Necropolis of Pantalica, also UNESCO site, the prehistoric village of Castelluccio, until the Roman villa of Tellaro.

Noto is a perfect place to visit all year round: in summer, where you can combine cultural visits excursions in the beautiful sea of Sicily, in autumn and winter, maybe along the road of the Val di Noto wine that It winds through six towns of South Eastern Sicily, as Palazzolo, Avola, Noto, Rosolini, Ispica and Pachino.

Formerly called Neas by Sicilians, Greeks and Neaton Netum by the Romans, the Arabs were to give her the final name of Noto. The term which in Arabic has the same meaning as in Italian, was intended as a tribute to the beauty and importance of the city.

Noto Lido (Syracuse Sicily Italy), Residenza Adriana sul Mare
average rating of 5.0 based on 2 reviews

Sehr schön gelegen, sauber und sehr ruhig.

  • 5 of 5

Vielen Dank. Wir haben den Uraub sehr genoßen.

Fantastic place directely at the beach

  • 5 of 5

We enjoyed a wonderful week here in this very nice house. You cannot come closer to a beach like from this property. Very nice sunrise from the balcony and fantastic view over the sea.

Sebastiano was a perfect host who cared about us very well. He even organized the welcome in the night. Thanks also to Aurora who waited for us with the keys at 01.45 am when we arrived by car from Catania airport.

The apartment is equipped with everything a family needs for holidays. As we were here in the off season (mid October) unfortunately a lot of shops and restaurants were already closed. However, we found nice restaurants here and in the nearby.

As we must travel home today we are very sad now but we are looking back to a wonderful week we had here.

Noto (Siracusa-Sicily-Italy)

"The impressive silence of the Baroque garden monuments"

"Go in Noto, believe me ... this is a place that, if one happens to us is trapped and happy, who moves more", writes Gesualdo Bufalino.

Visiting Noto is undoubtedly a priority for those who went on the road in the province of Syracuse. Defined the golden stone garden, Noto strikes every visitor with its enchanting and aristocratic atmosphere warm data from the honey-colored stone tones. At one time the city of nobles and prelates, the Noto today is about to become a center of art and culture, where the magnificence old have turned into a common world heritage. Among all the centers of Val di Noto upset by the 1693 earthquake is considered the capital of the Sicilian Baroque: built from scratch in a different site than the one that was totally razed to the ground and which today only ruins scattered on delll'Alveria hill.

To Noto with streets among citrus, olive and almond trees is enchanting, cross the fresh and shady avenues of the Public Gardens, it is even more; characteristic are the pinkish tones sometimes gilded facades of countless churches, convents, monasteries and stately mansions. Deliberately built on a gentle slope, every corner, every view is intensely dramatic and is very pleasant to walk, almost forced a heads up, to see an explosion of decorations, stone embroideries, statues, pot-bellied balconies and wrought iron grilles on majestic facades.

Continuing in the plan of the Church of St. Francis and the simple but elegant church of "St. Clear ", or from the area of S. Salvatore up to the masterpiece of "S. Domenico ", passing through a reborn Cathedral that, on a monumental staircase, triumphs in front of the sinuous loggia of Palazzo Ducezio, what is striking is the extraordinary harmony of the whole. The Palazzo Nicolaci balconies, on the homonymous street, renamed by netini "The ascent of the prince", are unique: original creations by local artists that amaze every passerby with their masks, with sinuous sirens or with winged horses. The way Nicolaci blooms every spring, as a salute to the beautiful season that celebrates Noto through the Flower Festival. The ascent of the prince becomes a long carpet of brightly colored flowers that reproduce every year a different theme. The result is truly picturesque.

With the exception of the holidays, the atmosphere that usually reigns in Noto is a quiet town, yet sophisticated tourist resort, which keeps with pride, the memory of its past. The baroque of his stone jewels are unique culinary delights. Pizzuta almond, marzipan, and oranges are turned into sweet delicate flavors now spiced by now, that join very well the delicate Moscato d. or c. produced in the area.

Just outside the village, turning towards the sea, you can stroll on the golden beaches of Noto of "Marina" or the cove "Calabernardo", or, turning to the south, you will find yourself among the African dunes of Vendicari, the ruins of a 'old trap with marshes visited by flamingos and other migratory birds.

And if you are still addicted to ancient archeology, you will amaze you admiring the mosaics of the Villa Romana del Tellaro, valuable for the manufacturing and the subjects represented.

For those who are looking for places far away from everyday life, it will see the picturesque Valley of Miracles, the places dear to the hermit S. Corrado today the town's patron saint, or the impressive "Sanctuary of the Madonna of the Stairs".

"Everybody had to have a great pride, great pride, a high sense of self, self as individuals and as a community in itself, if immediately after the earthquake took and knew miraculously rebuild those cities, with those topographies, with the Baroque architecture: spectacular, daring, dazzling concretization of dreams, achievements of fantastic utopia. " Vincenzo Consolo, essayist

The organized tours of prof. Emmanuel U. Muscova

Known, as well as having an important architectural heritage, it has a large and varied territory (the heights, hills, plains and sea coasts), rich in places of historical, archaeological and natural. Its territory is crossed by the river Tellaro and Asinaro Torrente, or Oleander. The two rivers are born respectively from Mount Lauro and Fontana Grande in the Carosello Valley. The varied landscape allows the visitor to enjoy a mild climate, an extensive coastline of golden sand and clear blue sea, considered the cleanest in Italy, from Calabernardo to Marzamemi, and landscape features, like the Alveria the Finocchito, Castelluccio, etc.
