Characterful Stockbridge garden flat on the edge Edinburgh's New Town

'The Old Bakehouse' is a converted basement in a terrace that was designed by architect Robert Brown in 1825 as part of Edinburgh's New Town. It has two spacious bedrooms, a beautiful sitting/dining room which looks out on to a quiet garden, and a fully fitted kitchen and shower room. The apartment was rennovated in 2015 and is situated in the cosmopolitan Stockbridge area near the Water of Leith and on the edge of the New Town.

** Please note that the ceilings in the flat are quite low and people over six feet tall will not be able to move around comfortably in some of the rooms **

The sitting room has a three-piece suite, freeview TV and a DVD player and the adjoining dining area seats four people. This room opens directly onto the communal garden.

The bedrooms are spacious and each one contains a double bed and ample cupboard and wardrobe space. Both beds have electric blankets.

The shower room is newly refurbished and has shower, basin, toilet and a large heated towel rail.

The kitchen is also newly refurbished and contains a fridge/freezer, microwave, combined electric oven and grill, ceramic hob and dishwasher.

The apartment has gas central heating and hot water on demand. There is also a washing machine, folding cot for toddlers or babies and a high chair. There is also wireless internet access.

All bed linen and towels are provided for guests, together with a welcome-pack consisting of hot and cold drinks and freshly baked cakes or cookies.

I always try to be at the apartment to welcome guests personally on arrival and on the rare occasions when I am not available guests can obtain the keys via a key-safe facility.

Why Chrissy Pritchard chose Stockbridge

I bought this flat with my husband two years ago because we live one hour away from Edinburgh towards the west near a town called Lanark and we decided that we would like to spend some more time in the Capital. The flat immediately appealed to us because it is quite unusual, nice and quiet and it opens out directly onto the garden.

What makes this apartment unique

This flat is cosy and comfortable and also very secluded and quiet. It's hard to believe that you are in the middle of Scotland's capital city but when you venture outside you find yourself in the heart of bustling Stockbridge and just a short walk away from the many attractions of both the New Town and the Old Town. I love to walk and explore and it's possible to do this for hours on end in Edinburgh.

Perfectly located character basement apartment.

This beautiful basement apartment is within easy walking distance of all of Edinburgh’s attractions, but located in what must be the most characterful yet quiet residential area, Stockbridge.

Chrissy went out of her way to ensure that everything was perfect for our stay, including leaving us a whole plate of baked treats.

I can’t imagine a better or more convenient place to stay for a short break in Edinburgh.

Perfect location!

Chrissy graciously allowed us to stay in her home in May of 2018. The location was perfect as it was literally a mile from the city center (Royal Mile, The Castle, etc.).

Chrissy was there to greet us when we arrived and thoroughly explained everything we needed to know. She left us a nice blue binder with directions and reminders so that if we had any questions during our stay we could just refer back to it. Before and during she was always responsive to our emails and we never worried about anything. She also left us some DELICIOUS cupcakes. Seriously. We argued over who got the last one.

The apartment had pretty much everything you would need. One thing that we left (that we didn't know we needed) were plastic bags for the grocery shopping. If you don't take your own, the grocery store charges you about 5 pence per bag needed. We also found that by downloading the Gett app (like uber) it came in very handy for the days we did not want to walk up the hill. All the cabs arrived within 2 minutes of ordering them and cost between 6 and 12 pounds depending on your destination.

The rooms were very big and had ample space for unpacking. The beds were harder than what we are used to, but this may be a European thing. The wi-fi worked great. We had some trouble with the TV but found if we turned it off for a bit, it re-set itself. We also had trouble with the coffee maker but this could have been user error rather than a problem with the maker itself. We just ended up getting some instant coffee. Pro-Tip: it's very difficult to find cream in this country. They all use milk. The ceiling height did not seem abnormal to us at all. Unless you are 6'5 you shouldn't worry. There are multiple steps leading down and at night they can be a bit dark, so just like at home, be careful going down. The bar on the corner (the Bailie) had great food and a wonderful local vibe that you don't get in the tourist part of the city.

All in all, we had an amazing stay here and wouldn't hesitate to do it again! Thank you, Chrissy!

Perfect!

Me and my family spent 3 nights in this flat and it was perfect. The flat itself is really lovely, the street and the area is nice and peaceful. Chrissy was also very polite and was willing to help with any problems we had. A fairly short walk from the city centre. I would definitely recommend this flat to anyone who would like to spend a few nights in Edinburgh!

Cosy flat in a great location

We had a lovely short break in October in this flat.

Stockbridge is great location, it has a village feel of its own, but is still within walking distance of Edinburgh city centre.

The flat is cosy and welcoming, and had everything we needed for our break, including some delicious ginger cake that Chrissy left for us. We hope to be back again.

It is within walking distance of both the Botanical Gardens, the Water of Leith and many of the city centre attractions.There is a popular Farmers' Market held every Sunday morning just across from the end of St.Stephen Street.
