About the property

5 ensuite bedrooms, on the beach, with pool, motor boat, fully staffed plus chef

Jahazi House is a palatial private beach house located on Kizingoni Beach, Lamu

Jahazi House, is named after the historical large trading dhows that brought Lamu its trading wealth. The property stands right on the edge of the Indian Ocean in a large garden of frangipani, fruit trees and shrubs.

The house is built of coral block, plastered in the local neru finish, tinted a soft ochre-yellow. It is designed along traditional lines around an inner courtyard, which holds a very private swimming pool, cooling the public rooms and bedrooms.

On entry to the house, you can see right through it, across the internal courtyard and pool with its marvellous frangipani tree, into the garden beyond. The entry hall has a baraza area, a large cushioned day sofa and a dining area, leading into the inner courtyard with its beautiful deep clear pool. The first floor has four guest bedrooms, all accessed from the inner courtyard and are furnished with ensuite shower rooms and their own private verandas. There is a covered baraza area behind the pool with sofas for relaxing and which leads through an ancient carved door onto a wooden deck area overlooking the frangipani garden with swing beds for that after lunch snooze.

The roof is one huge terrace, partially covered with makuti to provide a shaded bar, eating and sitting (baraza) area. At the rear of the house overlooking simply everything, is a wonderfully cool and spacious master wing, with its library, bedroom with windows on 3 sides and the 4th overlooking the pool, an ensuite dressing room and a double bathroom area.

The kitchen area is separate from the house and you will be looked after by your own house chef, waiter and room steward.

The House has it's own long boat for excursions or water skiing

. Frangipani, jasmine and lime trees have been planted in abundance around the house in the two acre garden.

About Jahazi House

My wife Gabi and I bought Jahazi House in 2006 while I was a busy doctor (psychiatrist) in Ireland. I have since retired and live in Kenya where I was raised until my father in turn retired to Ireland I where I went to medical school at Trinity College. In my career I have been attached to the University of Ireland, University of Toronto and the University of London. I never thought Gabi would go south of Provence in France but when I brought her to Kenya in 2003, it was love at first sight. Lamu is a Venice of Africa, no rads, no cars, all transport is by boat. Lamu town is Biblical in appearance and yet deeply sophisticated in it's culture. The trials of the world role off one when there.

Why Jahazi House chose Lamu

It is so fully relaxing and yet strangely thrilling to be on the coast of Africa. Can the two coexist, absolutely. When over and returning home there is the feeling of having had that wonderful holiday but also an adventure. Lamu is a UNESCO Heritage area. The community care for it with a desire to preserve what is so special about it. There is none of that hustle and bustle that tourist resorts might have.

What makes this villa unique

Being right on the beach is such a plus. Unique for the East coast of Africa, the house faces West so sitting on the baraza, looking at the setting sun of an evening is a memory to hold on to. The house is built in the Swahili style making it an adventure in itself.

There are other houses nearby but all luxurious in character, each in it's own grounds leaving one feeling quite secluded but not alone.

The only other people on the beach may be guests from those houses or passing staff. You can walk for miles on empty beaches or have Ali the boat captain take you in the house boat to Lamu town, Takwa ruins or Kanika rock!
