About the property

Christmas & New Year

We have only just opened up our availability for the Gatehouse over Christmas 2016 and Easter 2017. During the Christmas & New Year 2016 season, the Gatehouse sitting room is decorated with a festive pine tree with a beautiful hand-made local artisan Christmas garland for the door and a Christmas Hampers will await you. The Gatehouse and our Coach House can be taken together for groups of 8 guests. The Gatehouse Dining room can seat 10 guests. https://www.ownersdirect.co.uk/accommodation/p6775089

The Gatehouse at Upton Cressett is Grade 1 listed and has been awarded five stars by Shropshire Tourism. It also was the runner-up in the entire country for Best Luxury Accommodation at the Hudson's Heritage Awards after previously winning for Best Hidden Gem in the country. The Gatehouse has appeared on the cover of Country Life and Sir Simon Jenkins (in The Best Thousand Houses of England) described the Gatehouse as an 'Elizabethan Gem'.

This stunning Elizabethan hunting lodge was built by Richard Cressett in 1580 and is regarded one of the finest and romantic Elizabethan gatehouse lodges in the country. Due to its size and two large turrets, our Gatehouse hunting lodge is often compared to the Tower at Sissinghurst Castle in Kent in which Vita Sackville-West created her library and wrote her books.

Famous occupants include Prince Rupert of the Rhine, nephew of Charles I and commander of the royalist troops in the Civil War, who hid and slept in the top floor bedroom to escape Parliamentary troops. According to historical sources, Prince Rupert garrisoned ‘60 royal horse’ at Upton Cressett. The suite is named after him and offers fine views looking out across the historic deer park that the royalist cavalry would have ridden across before reaching the Gatehouse. Other guests include Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher and her husband Sir Denis and Elizabeth Hurley. Off-season the Gatehouse is also used as a writers' retreat thanks to its romantic and creative environment.

The Gatehouse is a self-contained property that accommodates up to four guests in two separate suites and has its own private garden with fruit trees and a fountain.

There are two double bedrooms (Prince Rupert Suite and Thatcher Suite), two Turret Bathrooms, sitting room with a Tudor fireplace, kitchen, and a dining room with a Tudor fireplace that sits up to eight people.

The Prince Rupert Suite

This historic and romantic bedroom suite is especially popular with honeymoon couples or those celebrating an anniversary. It is located up an atmospheric carved oak spiral staircase leading to the top floor where Prince Rupert hid from the Parliamentarian forces in 1646. The windows offer superb views of the unspoilt Shropshire countryside that stretches out across the old deer park. PG Wodehouse, who was brought up around Bridgnorth, called this Shropshire countryside ‘the Paradise of England’.

The beamed top floor banqueting chamber was originally used as a ‘prospect tower’ for the hunting lodge – with views stretching for miles – as well as serving as a viewing chamber for the ‘ladies of the house’ to watch the hunt in the deer park around the Hall.

The Prince Rupert suite is perfect for special romantic occasions as it boasts a stunning super-king four poster canopy bed decorated in a 16th century-style linen fabric depicting scenes from an Elizabethan hunt by the artisan Melissa White.

There is a free-standing claw bath on a raised oak platform inside the bedroom as well as a luxuriously appointed Lefroy Brooks shower in the en suite Turret Bathroom. The huge room also features an oak library section with two comfortable arm-chairs, a writing desk and an armchair reading area.

The suite also has Wi-Fi and Freeview TV.

The Thatcher Suite

This suite is named after the former British prime minister – and her husband Sir Denis – who spent two nights in the bedroom whilst staying at Upton Cressett in 1994 as a guest of Sir Bill Cash MP.

The Thatcher Suite has a super-king canopy bed with ornate 16th century plasterwork, oak panelling and mullion windows overlooking the Elizabethan apple garden.

The room has a wet-room-style shower room in the turret with Lefroy Brooks fittings, marble tops and under floor heating.

The sitting room has a working Tudor fire-place below a beautiful ornamental plasterwork over-mantel. The ceiling also has fine original 16th century ornate plasterwork. Freeview TV and DVD player. The property has WiFi.

The Dining Room

The dining room can seat 10 people and is decorated in the style of a hunting lodge, with a romantic open fire place.

An off-site laundry service is available by arrangement, please contact the housekeeper for further information.

Guests can unload their cars in the bay outside The Gatehouse steps but we ask that during their stay all cars are parked in the Hall car-park.

Guests have access to the historic gardens of Upton Cressett.

Both bedroom suites are reached up an oak spiral staircase which is not suitable for small children or infirm adults.

Our housekeeper can cook three course dinners (@£35 per head) by request. Menus are seasonal. For sample menus please email laura@ This dinner service is offered so long as advance notice is given.

Services offered by pre arrangement –

Maid service/extra cleaning

Local day tips and tours

Babysitting

Pre-stocked fridge

Single meal Chef – one special meal cooked, served and cleared away by a chef

The Gatehouse has a selection of leaflets promoting local visitor attractions as well as information and maps of local walks.

Heating

There is gas central heating in all rooms of the Gatehouse, along with under-floor heating in the bathrooms. There are working log fires in the sitting room and dining room. We provide kindling wood and some logs on arrival. For the remainder of your stay, guests need to collect their own logs from the nearby wood-shed and buy additional kindling if required.

Kitchen

The fully equipped kitchen has an electric cooker, oven, microwave, American fridge/freezer. There are glasses, cutlery and crockery for up to eight guests. Basic ingredients such as sugar and black pepper are provided but it is advised that guests stop off on route to do their own shopping.

The nearest butcher and food market is in Bridgnorth, which also has a good Sainsbury’s and Marks & Spencer. For our local shopping recommendations.

Stunning, Spectacular Historic Gatehouse

  • 5 of 5

We literally planned our England trip around the chance to stay at this incredible historic Gatehouse and we are so glad we did as it was a highlight of our trip. The property is perfect in every way and the gardens were in full bloom. The owners made us feel very welcome and ensured we were comfortable. It's hard to say which part was the best when it was all truly special. Pictures do not do this Gatehouse justice. I didn't want to leave, and my conversations with Sir Bill Cash, Lady Laura, and William Cash remained with me long after we left. History buffs, architecture buffs, and romance lovers, don't miss this one.

Stunning property in beautiful setting

  • 4 of 5

The house itself is really beautiful, we stayed there to get ready for my wedding at a nearby venue and the bedroom on the top floor was perfect for getting a group of women preened and polished for the day! The kitchen is very small if you were wanting to cook anything exotic but perfectly fine for breakfasts and simple meals. The place was spotlessly clean, however I do feel for the price it may have been a nice touch to have fresh milk etc. available on arrival, and a proper range of toiletries. We didnt feel especially welcomed on arrival at the property, but as it was self catering this didnt upset our stay too much, as we had no need to see the owners again. The instructions on location before booking do not give the detail on how remote this property is, this was only sent through the day before arrival - it is up a very long, steep single track road which in winter I imagine becomes very difficult if flooded/icy - this goes on for around 3 miles. However, it is worth the trek, as the views are stunning and very very peaceful, but did cause us some difficulty with encouraging local taxi drivers to traverse the road!!

Outstanding property. Interesting history and superb decor

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful week at this beautiful and historical property in the Shropshire countryside. It was my wife's birthday while we were here and we had a lovely meal prepared by Laura to celebrate. It was a very memorable stay.

A relaxing treat

  • 5 of 5

We were visiting Shropshire for a walking holiday with friends so situated near Wenlock edge and Brown Clee this was a good location for us. We were greeted by the housekeeper on arrival who had left us a hamper of local goodies. Lovely touch.

The building was more impressive than its pictures and we loved the shower rooms in the turrets, a clever modern adaptation.

One evening we had our dinner cooked and served by Sacha the housekeeper she had lit the log fires and cooked local steaks from the next door farm and apple crumble from the gatehouses very own garden. After a long day it was a great treat to be taken care of. We crawled into a large four poster bed at the end of the day. Bliss!

Stunning gatehouse in a beautiful rural location

  • 5 of 5

This really is a little gem. Four of us had a lovely weekend enjoying this unique historical place. It is well equipped, very cosy and the beds are particularly comfortable.

The property details state clearly that the stairs are not suitable for young children and the infirm and this is true but it all adds to the charm of the place.

It is in a rural position and eating out would involve a very long (dark) walk or a car journey, but we were very happy to cater for ourselves and eat in the delightful Tudor dining room by candlelight.
