Overview

About the property

Set on a rural historic Highland Perthshire Estate close to Loch Rannoch and on the edge of the second largest remnant of ice age forest in Scotland. Lovely traditional cottage with spacious lounge with wood-burning stove. Peat can be bought from the Estate and we will light a welcoming fire for guests arriving in colder weather. Large games room or secondary lounge. Sleeps 4 in one double room and one twin. Large kitchen/breakfast room with dining room , downstairs bathroom. Plenty of room and outside garden area for sitting out and summer barbecues. There are other Estate properties around the cottage, some in need of refurbishment, but it's very quiet and private. Please read all the property notes and facilities before booking. Electric at 18p per unit. Bed linens included but bring your own towels.

Notes:
The water supply is untreated and tinted brown with peat. The water has been tested and safe to drink, however for babies and the elderly we recommend boiled water for drinking as no chemical treatment is added to the supply like mains water. There is a clear spring for drinking water on the Estate. Please ask where the location of the Spring is if you would like to have clear drinking water without peat content. Property on a private bio system so nothing to be flushed down the toilet that would cause blockages. Peat can be supplied for £12 a sack for the woodburner . Electric charged at 18p a unit by meter reading. Please note that cleaning at £35 per hour will be deducted from the good housekeeping deposit if the property is left in a dirty condition.

Perfect cottage to get away from it all! So much to explore...kids loved it

  • 5 of 5

Very roomy, rustic cottage which was super cosy with the log burner on. Bedrooms in the eaves very comfy. Owners were friendly and helpful. Kids had great fun exploring and wandering along the loch side. Kinloch Rannoch is only 5 miles away for supplies and firewood or peat and we went to dinner at the Mcdonald hotel which was nice. A walk along the river at nearby Struan/Calvine was a highlight - kids loved climbing over the rocks at a quieter part of the river. A lovely place to stay in a beautiful part of Scotland.

Had a great time with family

Owner's Response: Thanks for this honest and positive review. We are happy to be doing what we wanted to offer with this cottage, the location is unique being on an Estate that is surrounded by nature and ancient forests where the deer come to graze every night. Clear skies without any light pollution to admire the starry nights. The cottage is well equipped and comfortable and suits couples wanting a romantic break or a family up to 4 to come and get away for a few days and spend some quality time together. We are pleased to be providing good accommodation to happy guests.

One of the best cottages I have been to. Very beautiful, peaceful and vast surroundings. Warm hosts

  • 5 of 5

Cottage is vintage style. A 10 minute walk to Blackwood forests which was memorable. And lots and lots of wild pets around, lovely looking bunnies. Rein deer were easy to spot. The lake nearby had some stunning views and the road to train station is also a scenic route (suggested by the owner). The hosts were a friendly lot and attended to our queries and concerns straight away, and they live near too. Peaceful and detached from the noisy city feeling. Best fit for bachelors or family with kids.

Owner's Response: That is such a great review, the cottage is described as just what we wanted to provide for guests, away from it all and plenty of nature to get absorbed into. We like to give guests privacy but theres always someone here on site if theres any queries or problems. Being situated on a private Estate guests can also enjoy the very rural area without feeling isolated.

Lovely wee cottage in deepest Perthshire

  • 5 of 5

A cosy, homely cottage with a great log burning stove and lots to see and do. Clean, comfortable, quiet, welcoming and a great place to use as a base for exploring Perthshire. Our three (5 and under) boys loved it and had fun away from the usual hustle and bustle. Loads of books to read, tele (for Wimbledon!) and space for a family to spend time together.

This is an unusual holiday let...in that it is surrounded by semi-derelict buildings.

  • 3 of 5

However it was very quiet and once we had got used to the 'ghosts' was delightful. The actual cottage is very comfortable, and cosy warm in the summer. The owner was very welcoming. There are plenty of outdoor things to do in the vicinity. We hope to return.

Worst place I have ever rented

  • 1 of 5

This is located in the middle of nowhere, not where the map has indicated. The closest restaurants are nearly 45 minutes away. All of the surrounding homes are dilapidated. By the time we arrived, we wanted to take a shower. We noticed a note on the table that said you cannot drink the water but if you do, it must be boiled because the water is brown. When I turned the shower on, sure enough, the water was brown. Another note said if you use any towels, they would charge 9 pounds per person. These were old, worn out towels. We booked this rental because of the available wi-fi, but were told when we arrived there actually was no wi-fi available wi-fi inside the property, but if we wanted to use the wi-fi next-door, we would have to go outside to use it. The rental next door was not occupied, so the wi-fi was not on and because we were in the woods, we had no internet, which meant we could not look for available restaurants online or anything else. I emailed the owner the first night and advised we were leaving because this was not at all what we were expecting. We asked for a two night refund and I was told she could do nothing about it and she drank the water herself and "it is 2016, no one boils brown water anymore even if Scotland has the purest water anymore." I still have not received a refund to this date.

Owner's Response: It's such a shame that some people don't read the property descriptions fully, most of these issues would have been covered. People that love the countryside enjoy staying in this cottage, see the other 4* reviews and appreciative comments by previous guests. In the Scottish Highlands you can't expect to have the facilities on hand that you get in the towns and cities. I am surprised that none of these complaints were brought to my attention before departure, the guests stayed the night and left in the morning and emailed me to ask for a refund. A member of staff that took them free fire wood on arrival advised them that there were a couple of restaurants locally that they could try, further the guests had called earlier from the Riverside Cafe in the village 5 miles away, to ask directions so I am puzzled why they blamed the lack of Internet at the property for the reason why they didn't eat out. As for the water, this is explained on the property listing and most guests are really delighted to be bathing in pure Scottish spring water without chemical additives and tinted brown by the natural peat content. The boil water notices are displayed to comply with EU regulations for untreated private water supplies, not uncommon in rural areas. Anyone loving the countryside and wanting a relaxing peaceful holiday would strongly disagree with this review.
