Single storey 1 bedroom with garden & woodburner, on a family farm, free Wifi

This gorgeous bolthole is set in the heart of pretty Ryedale and the Vale of Pickering surrounded by rolling countryside. It was completely refurbished in 2016 to a very high standard. Perfect for relaxing weekends, walkers, cyclists, a romantic retreat or a culture-filled experience with excellent restaurants and places to visit nearby to include a first class local pub serving delicious food within walking distance.

The Granary comprises a spacious one bedroom cottage with a Vi-spring mattress on a super king sized bed, Egyptian cotton bed linen, antique pine furniture, art on the walls and a beautiful view across the open fields of the arable farm. It has a brand new eat-in kitchen and a new tasteful bathroom with a separate walk-in shower and White Company towels. The large sitting room has a wood burner for cosy evenings (logs included), a large sofa and armchair, fresh flowers, coffee tables, all furnished with the owners' art, antiques and collectables.

Set at the end of a private road off a country lane, this is unquestionably peaceful and idyllic in its setting and is full of character. It adjoins the main house at the very end of the property to ensure it retains its privacy but the owners are on hand to offer advice and local knowledge, having grown up in the local area.

It has a fenced and (mostly patio) garden, with table and chairs, stunning views across towards the North York Moors and a wood-burning brazier to keep warm or to use as a barbecue.

The holiday home is just 5 miles from the bustling market town of Malton, and Pickering, nestled between the Howardian Hills and the Moors. Helmsley is only 20 minutes away and was just awarded 'best market town in Britain'. It also has easy access to the historic city of York and is only 40 minutes from the spectacular North East coast with seaside towns such as Whitby, Filey and Scarborough to explore. Historic stately homes of Castle Howard, Duncombe Park and Nunnington Hall are only a few miles away. We are also very close to the North York Moors National Park, Dalby Forest and other local attractions such as Eden Camp.

You enter The Granary through the garden, to a sheltered front door (all brand new external windows and doors) which leads into a small hall. The bathroom with WC, basin, bath and separate shower is to your left and the kitchen straight ahead with dining table and amenities listed below. The corridor then leads onto the large bedroom and spacious sitting room. All internal doors are reclaimed pine, carpets, rugs and tiling all fitted this year.

A welcome pack awaits you on arrival to include milk, tea, coffee etc; the bedroom features a double wardrobe, two bedside cabinets and a generous chest of drawers all in antique pine; the well-equipped kitchen has an electric ceramic x4 hob with oven and grill, toaster, kettle, dishwasher, fridge with ice-box; (iron/ironing board, clothes washing facilities and extra freezer space are available on request); Farrow & Ball colour scheme;; free Wifi; flat screen TV with Freeview; games, books and binoculars (to spy on the local wildlife to include garden birds, pheasants, partridges, barn owls nesting nearby and wild deer!); hairdryer; no internal steps; oil central heating throughout; parking right outside the front door for two cars; public footpaths criss-cross the farm for plenty of nearby walks.

Sorry no pets and no smoking in the property.

We are situated in the middle of our family's arable farm. After university, I enjoyed working in London for over ten years, before then returning home in 2007 to my beloved countryside, but continuing close working links with the south.

The Granary is so accessible to so many attractions if you feel like keeping busy, but is such a tranquil retreat if all you feel like doing is lighting a fire and realxing or sitting in the garden looking across the open fields. We have finished and accessorised the property to a high-end standard in 2016 so it is in immaculate condition, very comfortable and a relaxing place to be. We're close to the Moors, the coast, historic houses, museums, cities and local towns to explore - we have a bit of everything all on our doorstep.

What makes this house unique

The views! The peace and quiet. The spaciousness of the property despite it being only one bedroom - the rooms are all generously sized. The tasteful decor will feel calming and interesting. As a single storey barn conversion, it is also suitable for visitors with limited mobility.

This cottage is set in a beautiful location over looking open fields. We have stayed at many cottages in the past and this one by far is the best. Everything in the property is finished to an exceptionally high standard with no expense spared. Even little touches are thought about such as milk in the fridge and fresh towels laid out. The owners, James and Kate are very welcoming and happy to help with anything you may need. The bed is to die for, superking size and extremely comfortable, we could have stayed in it all day. Lots of things to do in the area too; such as Eden camp, Flamingo Land, Castle Howard and a short drive to York, Malton and Scarborough. We will definitely be returning in the winter months to make full use of the gorgeous log fire. Thankyou James and Kate for a fantastic stay.

Lovely quiet, rural cottage

Perfect for getting away from it all, the Granary Barn just outside Malton is perfect if you're looking for a quiet cottage for two. Just the right size, and super cosy in the winter. The location is very rural though, you definitely need your own transport and be prepared for some farm track driving! If it's wet, or has been wet, the track down to the cottage can become very muddy and slippy, but there is an alternative option which the owner will tell you about. Other than that, nothing to fault this property.

The Granary

The Granary is wonderful peaceful retreat in beautiful countryside situated in a rural location.

We had a lovely two nights stay in the tastefully furnished cottage which was extremely well equipped & had a very comfortable huge bed.

The owners had very kindly supplied tea bags /coffee & some milk in the fridge plus a gorgeous lemon cake that was a very nice surprise, thankyou so much, a lovely touch.

We have no hesitation in recommending Kate's wonderful cottage.

The house is reached by a quarter mile long private road, yet isn't too isolated as the owner's live next door, with a detached farm house on the other side. It is incredibly quiet here, with wildlife in abundance from birds and hares to wild deer to be glimpsed across the fields in front. It also benefits from various public footpaths on and around the farm, and is only around a mile as the crow flies (along a public footpath) to the local village of Great Habton with its pub The Grapes Inn which serves excellent food.

The house is surrounded by rolling countryside. The Granary is just 5 miles from the historic town of Malton and 7 miles from Pickering and the North York Moors where countless good eateries, pubs and bars, a cinema, museums and a steam train to mention just a few attractions are open to all.

Just a few suggestions on what to do are below, and please also see our links page to local attractions and information.

For stately homes, castles and gardens, less than 10 minutes away is the stunning Castle Howard, set in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and home to the Howard family. Duncombe Park is one of Yorkshire’s foremost historic houses and estates with a spectacular landscaped garden, and the surrounding parkland open to visitors most of the year. Nunnington Hall, Scampston Walled Garden, Rievaulx Terrace and Temples and Ampleforth Abbey are just a few more wonderful sites within half an hour's drive.

Ryedale's market towns are well worth a visit. The nearest is Malton - a pretty, bustling town with 'proper' livestock markets every Tuesday and Friday, monthly farmers' markets and Saturday general markets. Great local produce, cafes, restaurants and regular food markets. It has an array of traditional shops with butchers, deli's, grocers, auctioneers and a fishmonger as well as a major supermarket. Spend a lovely afternoon strolling around the independent antiques dealers, collectables shops, rope-makers, clothes and home accessories shops. Or choose Pickering – meander around the local shops, antique centre, and see the steam trains in this ancient, small and very pretty town. And then there's Helmsley – recently won the 'best market town in Britain' award and the perfect day-trip destination. A bustling market square is towered over by the remains of Helmsley Castle, it even has its own outdoor pool, galleries and arts centre, a walled garden and luxury spa. Plenty of excellent places to eat and spoil yourself.

York is well worth a day trip and is bursting with history, shopping opportunities and lovely restaurants. It will take between 35 and 45 minutes to drive there depending on the traffic. Harrogate is a beautiful historic spa town, a little further away as it will take up to an hour to drive there. It has an excellent selection of shops and places to eat, glorious gardens, the world famous Betty's tea rooms and of course the Turkish Baths.

For the coast - Filey is a traditional fishing town with an amazing 5 mile stretch of beach and around 35 minutes away. Surfing, fishing, walking, yachting, amusements and good fish and chips on offer here. Scarborough is a larger seaside destination, divided into two bays both with blue flag beaches. It has a traditional seaside holiday feel, plenty of fishing boats and family attractions. Whitby is steeped in history. Enjoy the beach here, or climb the 199 steps that lead up to the magnificent ruins of Whitby Abbey and the churchyard that gave Bram Stoker the inspiration to write Dracula. Explore the maze of alleyways that run down to the busy quayside, learn about Captain Cook, and fish and chips here is a must, sitting overlooking the harbour. The beach at Whitby runs north for a couple of miles to Sandsend which is a charming seaside village with easy access to the beach below.

Robin Hood's Bay is a jumble of white-washed cottages tumbling down a steep hill. Runswick Bay is another village that appears to be rising out of the sea up into the cliffs, picturesque and with a wide sweeping sandy bay.

For more nearby outdoor fun the North York Moor's National Park is perfect for walkers and cyclists and the stunning scenery of the moors can be enjoyed from the car, or pulling up by a stream for a picnic and a paddle. Dalby Forest known as 'The Great Yorkshire Forest' offers miles of footpaths, bike trails, cafes and an activity centre. It also has a Go Ape and Tree Top Adventure – the award winning high wire forest adventure course of rope bridges, swings and zips as well as bike and Segway hire. Again it is only around 20 minutes drive from The Granary. Finally Eden Camp is a multi-award winning modern history themed museum housed within the buildings and grounds of a former Prisoner of War camp. It covers the history of the British Military in the 20th century and is our doorstep only 5 minutes drive away.
