About Karla Piner

I'm a furniture designer and have a passion for cleverly designed and beautifully made furniture and objects. I hope this passion comes across in Connell's House and Barn, which has been lovingly restored over the last two years. As well as designing furniture I also have a very keen interest in vernacular architecture both in Ireland and Scotland. I have worked on restoring many period properties during my career, but Connell's House & Barn is the first one I actually own!

I am a very keen cook and love nothing more than cooking for my three young boys, lovely husband and extended family. I love gardening and I especially like growing vegetables and herbs.

We lived in Scotland for ten years, before moving back to Ireland in 2012. We always spent our summer holidays travelling around England and Scotland, I adore both countries for their beautiful countryside, architecture and history.

My all time favourite movie since I was a kid is Out of Africa (Robert Redford and Meryl Streep need I say more!) and my favourite Irish TV show is Dermot Bannon's Room to Improve. I love all kinds of food but my husband's fennel and butternut squash risotto is pure comfort food to me.

I live twenty minutes from Connell Barn and House, so I'll always been on hand to help out guests and answer any queries. I'm very house proud, so the Barn will be squeaky clean when you arrive!

Karla Piner purchased this cottage in 2008

Why Karla Piner chose Meath

Connell's House and Barn was a derelict building when my family acquired it. It is the oldest building in Duleek village and was in existence during the famous 'Battle of the Boyne' in 1690. The Connell family lived here for several generations, hence the name, and it holds many memories for the people in the village still to this day.

It took two years to restore and re-build Connell's House and Barn and we are delighted to have saved this vernacular building for future generations to enjoy.

What makes this cottage unique

This is a genuine period thatched cottage, but it has all the comfort and space of a modern home, whilst retaining the character of the original building. It is furnished with an eclectic style of furniture. It has really comfortable beds, good quality bed linen and great showers. A truly unique property!

Guestbook comments from the owner

We stayed in Karla's beautiful cottage and barn for two days with a large group of our closest friends. The cottage is spacious, cosy, beautifully decorated and was perfect for us to hang out, have a tasty BBQ and catch up. We cooked for lots of people multiple times throughout the few days we were there and the kitchen is very well stocked with top class appliances. The bedrooms are warm and cosy and the beds were plush. Communication with Karla was quick and easy at all times. She was clear and very accommodating and recommended local caterers to help supply our large group. She even left us so delicious homemade biscuits and sweeties. In short she spoiled us! The area is a delightful combination of quietness and closeness to local shops. All our guests were very impressed with the cottage and we would very happily stay there again. 5 stars all-round!

Beautifully restored cottage with all the amenities

  • 5 of 5

Karla has really thought of everything for a comfortable stay. The cottage is beautifully restored and decorated to the highest standard. The beds were comfortable with luxurious bedding and we wanted for nothing during our stay. It is also very family friendly (we were a large family group of 5 adults and 5 children) with plenty of space for everyone. The cottage is perfectly suited to explore Dublin, the Boyne Valley and is just 90 minutes from Belfast. I can not recommend the cottage highly enough and hope we can return for another visit in the future.

Perfect quiet getaway!

  • 5 of 5

The cottage is absolutely lovely. Spotless yet comfortable and Karla has thought of everything! It was perfect for the six of us, with plenty of room for all of us in the living room and at the kitchen table.

The location is a great home base for exploring if you don't want to spend all of your time in the big city.

Beautiful property

  • 5 of 5

We recently stayed at this lovely thatched cottage in Duleek while attending a family wedding nearby. We were greeted by our host Karla who explained the history of the property etc.

The house has some very unique features. It is very spacious and was of a very high standard with regard to cleanliness and comfort.

I can highly recommend this accommodation and if we were ever back this way again would not hesitate to stay in this lovely thatched cottage.

Connell's House is ideally located for exploring the beautiful Boyne Valley, for example New Grange (Bru na Boinne) and The Battle of the Boyne museum is only 10 minutes away. These are just two nearby enchanting places to visit, other places of interest in the Boyne Valley are, Mellifont Abbey, Monasterboice Round Tower, High Crosses of Kells, Loughcrew Cairns, Trim Castle, Hill of Tara, Drogheda museum, Millmount Martello Tower amongst many other historical sites.

Tayto Park is only 20 minutes away, it's a great day out for the family as is Fantasia Waterpark in Drogheda.

Dublin city centre is a 40 minute drive, but it is also very accessible using public transport via the bus or train station in Drogheda, which is only a ten minute drive from Duleek village.

There are numerous golf courses in the local area, such as Bellewstown, Kileen Castle, Royal Tara, Headfort, Ashbourne, Baltray, Greenore, Seapoint, Ballymascanlon, Balbriggan and many others catering for all levels of ability.
