About this property

Thatched Cottage Full of Art & Atmosphere

Greenville Cottage is part of my home, a stone built thatched cottage dating back to the early 1840s. It was built by my Great Great Great Grandfather Martin Maher. His brother James also resided at the property, in the quarters where I live with my husband and three children. James and his family emigrated in the late 1840s, to the United States, settling in Greenville Ohio. The Cottage accommodates four guests, having two bedrooms, the Parlour Bedroom and the Loft Bedroom, and one bathroom, as well as a small but functional kitchen and the living/dining room we call "The Aula" . We are very grateful to the Heritage grant that facilitated the re-thatching of the back roof in recent years and will soon be applying to rethatch the front of the cottage. We are also in the process of restoring the old stone walls and grassing areas in our own yard , situated beside the cottage. Guests can enjoy looking at the beauty of this craftsmanship of thatch while eating in the Orchard Garden, snugly situated at the rear of the house, and available to our guests.

The house has many examples of art, mostly by local artists, photographers and crafts people who are our friends, which guests can enjoy, and the interior design of the cottage is of an exceptional high standard. I live right next door with my husband and three boys - and our two pet dogs. The boys love to play in the front yard and the dogs can do a little barking when they want food (and lots of tail wagging!), but they are friendly and welcoming.

We have our own rural country well, so we advise guests to be please be sparing with water use as the cottage is traditionally designed with a small tank, in respect to it's heritage. If there is heavy rain or drought, the water can get discoloured for which we apologise.

Old houses can be very hard to dust to an exceptional high standard, as some of the walls inside are natural stone. The also attract the odd harmless spider.

My blog is also available on line if you search 'Greenville' and 'blog' in Co. Tipperary.

Greenville, Templemore Holiday
Denise is a beautiful, friendly, considerate and very welcoming landlady. Her home baked Irish breads are fantastic. We were there ten days and she baked bread for us on three separate days as gifts. Absolutely delicious. We won't hesitate in staying at her beautiful self contained property again. Any future stays in Tipperary, she will be our first port of call. Thanks Denise, you are amazing.

Quiet and rustic
Lovely old cottage with nice features and quirky ornamentation. It is lovely and quiet and it was nice to sit outside and hear nothing. Complete silence, could not even hear any cars. Great location for getting about too, close enough to the motorways. Cottage could be a bit chilly as the weather wasn't the best but I guess that's getting used to a different style of living. Only comment was it could have been cleaner. Although the spiders are a part of the furniture it was a little dusty, but that's a minor blemish. We'll worth he cost of staying.

Quirky country cottage
Traditional cottage with 'mezzanine' second bedroom. All facilities adequate. The charm of the cottage lies in its eccentric mix of modern art and shabby chic decor. There are family mementoes, books, bric a brac etc everywhere! The owners live next door and are very caring and helpful.

Central Stay
We chose Greenville due to its central location. Everything, major attractions are between 30mins and 2 hours away. From North to South and East to West, so much history, so many sites. Greenville was everything and more than expected with 2 fabulous hosts who are willing to advise and help at every juncture. After busy day trips the cottage was the perfect place to unwind, chill with a beer or wine, in the knowledge that you will have an undisturbed sleep, in a perfect tranquil location. Surrounded by farmers fields. Certainly recommend to any couples who want a nice quiet break. Places we visited included all marks out of 10: - Kilkenny 10 Ennis 9 Devils bit (well worth the walk) 9 Dublin 10 Waterford 5 Roscrea 6 Galway (clifffs of Moher and coast) 9 Galway city 7 Shannon 7 Jim of the Mill (difficult to find) 8 Fethard 7 Overall thumbs up to seven is historic Ireland.

About the host

Hosted by Denise Meagher

Host profile image
I am native to this part of Co. Tipperary. I grew up here in Killough, a few miles outside the town of Templemore. Many family names connect to this home - O Meachair/ Maher /Meagher but also Breen and Cahill and now my own precious family, Devine. I am married to Seosamh, and we have 3 young sons, Don, Joss and Étienne. We also have two pet Golden Retrievers, Mandjar (named after Mandurah, in Western Australia) and Venice. They do a little woofing - so guests be warned, but they are very lovable!

I have a Ph.D. in Anthropology from NUIM but have been involved most of my life in different aspects of the Arts. I designed and managed my own café- boutique for a few years and have a huge interest in Arts and culture; vintage fashion; costume jewellery, vernacular furniture. I also like to cook and bake so a nice Irish soda bread awaits and, of course, a warm welcome. I am currently completing a MA in Art History, Collections and Curating at University College Dublin.

Why they chose this property

You will love Greenville Cottage because of the traditional design which has not been tampered with, in respect for the vernacular architectural history of the house; the high ceilings in the mains rooms; the cosiness of the Loft Bedroom overlooking the Aula. The sounds of birds and nature all around and the proximity to the well known Devil's Bit Mountain, make this home special in many ways. There is a sense of being part of an Irish home when at Greenville Cottage - our children play in our private garden next door and our dogs always have a wagging tail of welcome for guests.

Key also to the location is the proximity to the motorways - you will be less than 2 hours from Dublin, Cork, Limerick and Kilkenny - all key historical places to visit while in Ireland. You can still return to the comfort of Greenville Cottage for your evening meal and relaxation.

What makes this property unique

Many friends have stayed at Greenville Cottage over the years, and all have spoken of the wonderful atmosphere, the charm, and the history of the house which exudes from the stone walls, and the pieces of furniture that come from Denise & Seosamh's ancestry. The house is also a tribute to local artists, photographers, and craftspeople, all of whom are friends of your hosts. This unique aspect would be of particular interest to visitors interested in interior design and the visual arts.
