About Caroline & Paul Haffner

Caroline and Paul grew up in the south of the country but have lived in the Alcester area for 40 years. Moved to Oversley Green in February 2016.

Paul retired December 2015 from a varied career of engineering and education and Caroline works at the local children's centre.

Caroline & Paul Haffner purchased this apartment in 2016

Why Caroline & Paul Haffner chose Alcester

We fell in love with this property that included the annex. The hamlet of Oversley Green is very friendly and rural but is only a short walk to town. The black and white cottage, the lovely garden and the riverside frontage sold it to us.

What makes this apartment unique

The property has fishing rights.

Next to the river is the pergola with a lovely sitting area with fire pit/ice bucket, depending on the weather,

A small sitting area outside Heron View to enjoy breakfast by the fish pond.

Excellent. All you could ask for.

  • 5 of 5

Caroline and Paul are wonderful hosts.

The property is impeccably clean with all that you require in a very quiet and tranquil area with easy access to the surrounding attractions.

Fishing at the bottom of the garden is a bonus. Especially with catching a 5lb 7oz Barbel.

One of Our Best UK Travel Experiences in More Than 40 Visits from USA

  • 5 of 5

Lovely setting, nicely decorated, comfortable cottage with beautiful garden leading down to gazebo on the River. Very clean and well-equipped for every normal need. Warm welcome from helpful and hospitable owners. Easy walk to Alcester High Street (Market Town with Roman History) and Waitrose. Convenient base for day touring. Stratford-Upon-Avon is less than half an hour (with rail service to London), Broadway and The Cotswolds in 30+ minutes, Cardiff in 90 minutes or so, Malvern Hills within easy reach, Bletchley Park in an hour or so, etc.) Local attractions include Coughton Court, Ragley Hall, easy access to river and wood walks, among others. Alcester is a town that values its heritage, is comfortable and safe, has a good range of shops, pubs and eating places. We HIGHLY RECOMMEND this excellent self-catering cottage.

Beautiful cottage and garden

  • 5 of 5

Went away for the bank holiday weekend the cottage and garden was beautiful everything you could possible need was in it and was absolutely spotless couldnt fault it. On the Sunday night spent the evening down by the river under the gazebo and lit the fire pit, Caroline and Paul had garden all lit up with fairy lights, it was really magically. Strongly recommend for a peaceful weekend away. Would defiantly go back.

Stunning, welcoming and perfect location and a beautiful part of the country.

  • 5 of 5

We received a very warm welcome and were shown around the property and the beautiful gardens. Caroline and Paul were the perfect hosts, offering advice and help, but then leaving us to it. The cottage has everything you need and is spotlessly clean. Parking at the front was a bonus, as were flowers and use of the garden which leads down to the river. Sad that we didn't get chance to do this.

Heron View is in a beautiful hamlet within walking distance of the pretty town of Alcester where we happily pottered about the shops and wandered the streets looking at the stunning buildings. The hamlet of Oversley Green is a lovely spot for a short wander where we met a friendly neighbourhood kitty! We also enjoyed watching the rabbits bouncing around in the field next door. Lots of wildlife on your doorstep. :)

We recommend Turk's Head for dinner and Orange Mable for breakfast and cakes, plus a fabulous late opening supermarket called Simply Fresh which had everything and more! We also ate at Summer Palace Chinese in Studley which looks dated from the front, but food was fresh and tasty and employed very helpful friendly staff. All you can eat and fast service.

We sadly missed visiting the antiques shops and all the charity shops in Alcester as we were busy Saturday. It's a shame that more shops aren't open on a Sunday to encourage spending by tourists. Still managed to part with quite a few pounds though! :D

We were at an event at Ragley Hall which was beautiful and well worth the visit. Disappointed with Coughton Court which we walked away from. If planning to go here, be aware of the entry fee and wait time. The board outside suggests a price of £9.50 for two people, but it's £12.60 for non-members and the prices on the board are for Nation Trust membership. We had to queue twice before getting to the right till before we had this explained. Then as we were about to pay our £12.60 each we overheard someone say that we would then have to wait over 2 hours to before getting in to the house itself. They also pushed membership too aggressively even after being told "no thanks" several times.

Heron View is highly recommended by us and we hope we're in the area sometime in the future to be able to stay again.

Thank you Caroline and Paul. Hope Caroline's foot gets better soon, and love to Molly and Carabelle. <3

When you need a great place to stay to be near grown up son and Grandchildren ...

  • 5 of 5

...it was such a treat to find Riverside Retreat and the lovely welcome from Caroline and Paul .

Perfectly placed for us near Studley we were able to be on hand to help with our son's house move and it was great having such lovely accommodation to come back to each evening .Spotlessly clean is always a" non negotiable" for us -and it was-! super clean and very comfy .We will certainly book again when we need to visit .Sadly we arrived in rainy weather but the fab setting with the river at the bottom of the garden is a real bonus .
