Overview

About the property

Luxury 4-bedroom pet friendly cottage with access to onsite facilities.

Fairways West is a newly renovated luxury property with four bedrooms and accommodating up to eight. To the rear of the south facing cottage is a lovely colourful garden and terrace area where children can play safely. Guests can also take advantage of the onsite leisure facilities, including an indoor heated swimming pool, which are only a short walk away.

The dog friendly Fairway West has four tastefully decorated bedrooms, one of which is located on the ground floor and great for families staying with grandparent. The bedrooms include two standard doubles (one upstairs and one downstairs) and two with zip and link beds allowing them to be made up as either a twin or a double depending on your requirements. The Master Bedroom located on the first floor benefits from its own with en-suite bathroom featuring a bath with overhead shower attachment. There are also two family bathrooms, the first is situated on the first floor and has a shower, whilst the second positioned downstairs near the double bedroom has a bath with overhead shower.

All the rooms at Fairways West are light and bright and have just been decorated and refurbished so like new. Downstairs there is a well equipped kitchen with dishwasher, electric cooker with 4 ring hob, plus a large fridge-freezer.

Off the kitchen is a wonderful, bright dining room with a lovely wooden table, which seats up to 8. The room opens onto the patio through French-doors. Beyond the dining room is a stylish, double aspect lounge with wood-burner and huge comfy sofas, plus a wall mounted TV.

Outside is a quiet patio, with pine table and chairs and a BBQ. Beyond the patio there are steps leading up to a large lawned garden, which is mainly level.

Fairways West can be booked alongside its sister cottage Fairways East. Together these two beautiful, luxury cottages provide a total of eight bedrooms, accommodating up to 16 (cottages linked by double internal doors).

When staying at the cottage, guests can take the short walk up to the hotel where they will find a lovely restaurant with countryside views, as well as several comfy lounges and bars where drinks can be enjoyed. The leisure facilities are also within walking distance and many are included in the price of the cottage, such as the indoor heated swimming pool, the sauna and hot tub, the Billiards Room with full size snooker table and the gym. A small additional charge is required for use of the all-weather tennis courts and 18-hole golf course.

Nearby there is the quaint North Devon village of Chittlehamholt, which has a good dog friendly pub and a few miles further on is Chittlehampton, which has a medieval church and award winning pub.

The market town of South Molton is not far, and the stunning beaches of North Devon are about 30 minutes away and provide great surfing, there are also a few quiet coves perfect for families with small children. Exmoor is a half an hours drive away and Exeter is about an hour away. The fishing village of Appledore is not far and full of pretty art and craft shops. Across from Appledore is Instow another quaint estuary village with great pubs and restaurants.

It is not only beautifully styled and decorated throughout, it is also equipped to a high level with plenty of features and facilities available for guests to take advantage. The golf and leisure facilities at the nearby Highbullen Hotel and Country Club can either be an integral part of your holiday or be ignored, it is not intrusive but does offer guests wonderful leisure facilities on your doorstep, many of which can be enjoyed for free or at a discounted rate, including the use of both the indoor and outdoor swimming pool. The tennis courts and 18-hole golf course are not included in the price but can be enjoyed at a discounted rate, which is the same as offered to guests staying at the hotel. If needed during your stay at the cottage, guests can also take advantage of the restaurant at the hotel.

Lovely property great location

  • 5 of 5

We had a great fortnight here, beds very comfy, lovely big sitting room and dining room. Staff at the hotel very helpful. The downstairs bedroom is down 2 steps with no handrail which makes it not ideal for disabled or elderly. Good quality crockery and cutlery but horrible bendy plastic serving spoons! On the whole though, lovely.

Could be lovely when it's finished

  • 3 of 5

High Bullen - Fairways West:

- The cottage had been refurbished but really wasn't yet finished, we should have been informed of this in advance.

- Building work was going on very close by, with work going on into the evening up to 8pm). We had to call reception in the end one evening to ask the builders to stop using their power tools as it was keeping our children awake (they did stop after that).

- There was only one key to the cottage. In a four bedroom cottage there is obviously going to be more than one couple so this was really impractical as we all went out separately and came back at different times each day. We had to resort to hiding the key in a pipe outside!

- The dishwasher was clearly pretty old. The only plates in the kitchen are either saucer size, or very large dinner plates which when stacked in the dishwasher (even a few of them) stopped it working properly so the contents didn't get clean at all. It should have been a convenience having a dishwasher but was useless as we ended up washing everything again anyway.

- There was no instruction book for the tumble dryer. It would only stay on for under a minute at a time, so on looking inside we discovered the lint filter was completely full (which is a fire hazard) and the water chamber was full which we could have found earlier if we had instructions, but we couldn’t use the dryer for a few days as it was left to us to carry out the maintenance. Things like this need to be maintained and checked properly.

- There were no drawers in the bedrooms. We hung up as much as we could, but pretty much ended up living out of our suitcases, especially with the children's things. It would have been much nicer to unpack everything when we were staying for a whole week. On mentioning this when we checked out, we were told that chests of drawers have been ordered. That's not of any help to us though, and is another example of the cottage not being complete/ready.

- Most of the mirrors in the bedrooms are pretty but impractical. Often with a large frame but very small actual mirror, especially the one in the master bedroom. There is no full length mirror in the entire house.

- On arriving the first day, the house was very cold (the weather outside was cold at this stage). We had a room thermometer as we had a baby and a toddler with us so we knew the temperature in the house was 15-16 degrees which is uncomfortably cold. We searched the house for a thermostat, and with the complete lack of any

Other Activities:

Highbullen Hotel has many facilities that are available for guests staying at the cottage to take advantage of, these include an 18-hole golf course, seven brand new all-weather tennis courts, an indoor heated swimming pool, an outdoor swimming pool (available during the warmer months), a fully equipped gym, a sauna, a steam room, a Jacuzzi, spa and beauty treatments, a croquet lawn and a billiards room with full size snooker table. Fishing and many country pursuits can also be enjoyed on the estate and can be arrange in advance.

If you are interested in dining at the hotel Devon View Restaurant offers wonderful food all with the backdrop of the beautiful North Devon countryside. Sunday roasts can also be enjoyed here, as can several themed nights, including curry night. For more informal meals there is The Cellars, which offers a children's menu. There are also a range of lounges and bars where you can have a drink whilst reading the newspaper. During warm months tea can also be arranged on the lawn. Pizza and takeaway can also be ordered through the hotel and delivered direct to the cottage.

Fairways West is located on the Highbullen Hotel, Golf and Country Club Estate, which is set high on a ridge between Exmoor and Dartmoor and bordered by the River Taw and River Mole. The estate, which is in Chittlehamholt, North Devon is a lovely countryside setting with wonderful rural views and home to lots of local wildlife, including red deer.

Within the village itself, which is only a short walk away there is a good dog friendly pub, a village playing field, and a handy shop selling day-to-day essentials.

For walkers there are an abundance of local footpaths and nature trails to explore, as well as woodlands and open countryside. Many of these can be accessed from the cottage and estate and are suitable for all ages and abilities. Cyclists will also love the area with lots of country lanes nearby; alternatively, the Tarka Trail, a largely traffic free tarmac pathway can be picked up in either Barnstaple or Bideford.

The market town of South Molton is just a short drive from the cottage and has plenty to entertain its visitors, including independent shops, several pubs and cafes (we highly recommend a visit to the Corn Dolly), and the Quince Honey Farm, which is a family friendly attraction.

If a day at the beach is required there are several within easy reach, including Westward Ho!, Woolacombe, Croyde and Saunton. These are blue flag beaches and are patrolled by lifeguards from Easter through to the end of the October half term. Many of the beaches along the coast are ideal for water sports with surfing being the most popular. Smaller coves can also be found along the coastline and can be great for playing in rock pools or enjoying a spot of peace and quiet.

If you would prefer to explore Exmoor, the National Park is less than a 30-minute drive and is home to some lovely tea rooms - stop off at Lynton and Lynmouth where Exmoor meets the sea and ride the Cliff Railway.
