About Juliette Fernandes

We moved from London 4 years ago, when we came to view the property we were blown away by the views and today we are still reminded by our guests just how special it is here. We originally set up and ran an Organic B & B for the first 3 years, it is still listed on Trip Advisor if you wanted to have a look at what our guests have said about the property and us. In 2015 we built a small but luxurious cabin discreetly tucked away in the 15 acres of grounds adjoining the house. We do share the same driveway that is used to access the house and have our own 4 acre field so you have exclusive use of the 3 acre garden directly in front of the house and the acre of woodland leading to the hills. We completely respect your privacy and can also be available for any queries if you should need us. We are, myself Juliette, my partner Neal and our much loved German Shorthaired Pointer Schmoo.

Juliette Fernandes purchased this house in 2012

Why Juliette Fernandes chose Hay-on-Wye

We fell in love with the property for a few reasons, the location for us was the most obvious, we are so close to Hay on Wye, we get to enjoy the best of both worlds. A short drive to Hay and we can immerse ourselves in the creative hub that is Hay. We often drive down to get inspired by unusual finds in the vintage shops like The End and The Old Electric or the endless bookshops, galleries and cafes. If you're feeling like a quiet day you needn't even leave the grounds, you can sit in the garden or the small woods and just listen to the birds and gaze at the Black Mountains. Red Kites and Buzzards often fly above the lawn as you sit enjoying the tranquility. There is so little light pollution at night. On a clear balmy night, and we do get them, you can sit out under a canopy of stars and just lie gazing up at the wondrous blanket of stars for hours and just cherish the silence.

A heaven near Hay!

The Red Kite is truly one of those homes that you dream about one day living in....

It's not just the breathtaking views from the house and grounds.... but the house itself is spectaculatly beautiful and stunningly designed.

From the windows and gardens you can see the breadth of the east and central Beacons - stretching from Hay Bluff to Pen-y-Fan and beyond and the views from the hill behind - a 10/15 min walk from the house is even more impressive - taking in Herefordshire and stretching into the rolling hills of mid Wales.

The house is vast and it's not just the combination of vintage and modern furniture and fittings but the detail to the furnishings: the numerous oil paintings, wonderful prints.... the abundance of wool throws for sitting out late at night in the "garden" with a wood fire.... the fresh flowers in every room.... the sumptuous vast en suites .... toiletries..... welcome basket of organic goods.... modern four posters in all the double rooms with wonderful comfy bebs..... a kitchen so spacious and well stocked with everything you could possibly need.... iincluding a wine storage/cooler.... we all fell in love with the place and the seclusion and peace was the icing on the cake..... the only sounds were the birds and sheep.

We were there for a long weekend to take part in the Brecon fell races..... and had planned to tour around the villages and sample the restaurants in Hay.... but we so loved the place that we spent most of our time (apart from running up mountains!) in the house and sat outside relaxing with a few well earned drinks. It was magical at night with a full moon and log fire ( there is a fire pit and iron burner with stacks of logs provided).

And last but not least the hugely generous and lovely owners, who live nearby with their gorgeous dog "Schmoo"(sp?!) - who made us feel so welcome and wanted us to fully enjoy everything / all the wonderful things the house has to offer... .and it has them in abundance.

Owner's Response: Dear Shaun, thank you so much for such a beautiful review. I'm so happy you had a wonderful time, it was a real pleasure meeting you and your fellow runners, what an inspiring group of men. You are dream guests, and by the way your spelling of Schmoo was spot on. Thank you again Shaun, enjoy the rest of the summer. Juliette

Absolutely perfect!

We were looking for somewhere quiet and private for the family to gather for a few days... but it needed to be very comfortable and top of my list was a big kitchen wher we could prepare meals but all be together without getting under each other's feet. Then we are rather partial to log fires and are also pretty fussy about large and lovely bathrooms... and not sharing them!

So with a big wish list I was very excited to find the Red Kite which ticked all the boxes, we quickly booked it up, Juliette (the owner) was a delight to deal with.

When we arrived our expectations were pretty high... so we were blown away to find that it was everything we had dared hoped and so much more.

It's perfect. The views are stunning, the house feels like home the moment you step through the door. It's fantastically well equipped... in the huge kitchen you will find everything you could possibly need. The lounge is a great chill space, great to relax after dinner chatting, watching movies, playing games while throwing logs into the wood burner. All bedrooms have great ensuite bathrooms, with underfloor heating of course to keep your toes toastie on the beautiful limestone floors.

I could write a book but if you're reading this hopefully you get it by now! A massive thank you to Juliette for sharing this wonderful home with us.
