Peaceful picturesque riverside setting. Many walks from door & near Ambleside.

This idyllic retreat within the historic 'Stepping Stones' country house, once home to Wordsworth's family, stands at the foot of Loughrigg Fell. It overlooks the famous stepping stones crossing the River Rothay which leads to close-by Rydal Water and is surrounded by stunning countryside scenes.

Stableman's apartment cottage features traditional beams and fabulous vaulted ceilings combined with tastefully designed interiors. With peaceful landscapes and an abundance of walks on its very doorstep, yet the village of Ambleside only a short distance away, this is a special place to fully embrace the sought-after Lake District lifestyle.

Park in the grounds of Stepping Stones, go up stone steps and walk through gardens to your own private patio area and front door. Entrance leads into a fully equipped kitchen and dining area with traditional vaulted ceilings and garden views. Two steps lead up to a cosy lounge with comfortable seating, flat screened TV, DVD and stereo. From the lounge two steps lead to a hallway, turning right leads to the ensuite double bedroom (double bed) and shower room, and in the opposite direction to the king size and single bedrooms and bathroom. The lovely bedrooms with pitched ceilings and Velux windows combine well with the character of the living and dining areas. There are stunning fell top views from all bedrooms. Outside there are beautiful views from the garden and a private patio area complete with garden furniture to enjoy al-fresco living.

The bedroom layout is attractive for just one couple wishing for more space, for a family/group of up to five or for two couples to holiday together.

We have 2 parking spaces to allow for this accommodation flexibility.

Stableman's is the perfect peaceful place to stay being in a stunning location with so many walks from the doorstep, yet convenient for bustling Ambleside and easy access to many parts of the Lakes.

Amazing cottage - perfect choice

Amazing cottage in best location above the river with beautiful views and everything you could need.

Very cosy for relaxing, beds super comfy and idyllic for walks in the area. Such a great choice from the door. Super convenient for Ambleside and Grasmere too. Rydal water and caves are very close and the local pub a good place to enjoy a pint before walking back for a super shower or soak in the bath!

Everything was as described and so much more than website can properly show of the location. Would 100% recommend and will be back again next year.

A Great Relaxing Family Weekend

A gorgeous, very well presented cottage in afantastic location. The cottage is close to Rydal and Ambleside and is a great base for exploring the lake district. We had a fantastic weekend, walking, relaxing in the cottage which has absolutely everything you need and trying the eating establishments in Ambleside. Looking forward to our next visit

Lovely comfortable warm cottage with lots of character. Very clean. Well equipped.

We took lots of walks right from the door, both flat and hilly. (The young ones in the party took to the hills, the older ones stayed mostly on the flatter paths). Good choice of eating places nearby from Michelin Star to pizza delivered to the door. Lovely warm bathroom where clothes can be dried, though main bedroom could have been a little warmer. We sometimes took the car to explore and walk in other parts of the Lakes. Nice and handy to Ambleside for food basics. Would thoroughly recommend.

A fantastic location and perfectly equipped cottage just outside Ambleside

We had a wonderful winter break in the Lakes and this cottage is in an idyllic and quiet location overlooking a stream with the hills beyond. The cottage is very well equipped and warm.

An absolute delight!

We have been going to the Lake District for years and we wished we'd come across Stableman’s cottage sooner. It is the best place we have ever stayed in. The location is beautiful, the cottage well stocked and thought out, full of character, and what a joy opening the blind in the mornings to such a stunning view. It truly felt comfortable like a home away from home.

Set in idyllic rural surroundings with a view that has hardly changed since the property was in the Wordsworth family, Stepping Stones is just minutes from Ambleside. Guests have a true getting away from it all experience in beautiful surroundings and stunning scenery spectacularly located by River Rothay near Rydal Water. There are many wonderful walks straight from the door, ranging from short walks to full day hikes.

Alternatively a few minutes in the car takes you to the vibrant village of Ambleside known by locals as the jewel in Lakeland´s crown. Here you will find an interesting range of local shops, tempting delicatessens, traditional Lakeland pubs and top-class restaurants - even a cinema and live music bar. There are also endless opportunities for outdoor pursuits. Lake Windermere can also be enjoyed from Waterhead Pier, where ferries depart regularly to Bowness and Lakeside.

Nearby too is Grasmere, a wonderful Lakeland village with views abound. Grasmere has drawn poets, artists and painters for centuries. Famously the home of William Wordsworth in Dove Cottage, from 1799-1808.

Bowness on Windermere is the most popular tourist destination in Cumbria; it is a hive of activity with plenty to see and do. Both young and old love to feed the ducks and swans at the water's edge and the many steamer cruises and boat hire are popular choices. There are cafes and restaurants to suit all tastes and shops to help you while away the hours. The famous Beatrix Potter museum is well worth a visit too.

Details on e local area, walks, restaurants can also be provided after booking is confirmed.
