Over 100 years old, this traditional, Istrian stone house nestles on the slopes of historic Kastelir. It has panoramic views of the coast below, especially from the 1st floor balcony.

Beautifully restored, with old wood beams, stone stairs & polished wood floors, the house is built on three floors. On the ground floor there is a kitchen-diner, small double bedroom & bathroom with shower. On the 1st floor there is a large living room with stone fireplace & balcony. On the top floor there are 2 double bedrooms & bathroom with bath.

Outside there is a small garden with a 6x3m2 pool, a covered dining area with a stone table & a sun terrace with sea views. Parking is private, at the start of the property & screened from the garden by wrought iron gates. Friendly Croatian neighbours.

There is a restaurant a minute's walk away & others close by. There's also a mini-supermarket a short walk away. With its stone stairs & unfenced pool, this property maybe unsafe for toddlers & small children.

About the Owner

Phil and I are two Brits who settled in Istria in early 2005. Having left the UK in the early 80s to take up jobs in The Netherlands and then Belgium, we ended up running our own small marketing communications agency in Antwerp. After many years beavering frenetically in the corporate jungle, we came to Istria for a more relaxed, outdoor lifestyle: to live somewhere we could have outdoor sofas, lunch on the terrace and an afternoon swim.

We fell in love with Istria and decided it was the perfect holiday location. First we built a little house at the bottom of our garden for family and friends. Then, after a year’s hunting, we bought this lovely 3-bed place as a holiday let.

Over the years we’ve stayed in a lot of self-catering places and we wanted to make Brnobici somewhere we would want to stay. Somewhere cosy and comfortable, where everything has been thought of. The sort of place we’d want to come back to time and again.

We live in a small Istrian village, not far from the sea with our 2 cats (Baggy & Tally). As well as running my small rental business, I also write/run Live Istria - the website for everyone interested in Istria or living in the sun - and when I have time, I love to garden.

Perfect location in a beautiful country

We have just returned from Istria, what a beautiful region. The house was perfectly situated for a relaxing holiday. Near to Porec but just far enough out for peace and quiet. With all that you could need and 3 restaurants nearby, within easy walking distance and a very handy supermarket/ bar too. We couldn't get over how cheap the food and drink were, even in the towns. So if you are feeding a family its a great place to go! The pool was very well used as the temperatures rose! We made the most of our week and drove up into the hills, beautiful villages and views. the beaches are pretty but you do need shoes that you can wear in the water as there isn't any sand but stones. The water was clear and warm enough to swim in. All in all a great place to visit and we will return. Thank you

Fantastic House in Brnobici

The house is extremely well equipped, furnished and appointed in this small village located approximatley 15 to 20 minutes drive away from the coast. It is very spacious and I cannot stress how well equipped the house is. It has everything you need including things you would only expect to find at home.

The house was clean, tidy and well furnished; it contained lots of tourist information for the surrounding area. Nicky, the owner, was very helpful; she made sure the Wi fi was working before we arrived and I think she had bought a new walking map of the area; not quite Ordanance Survey but I found it very useful during our stay.

We were revisiting the area to celebrate our 25th Wedding anniversary; we stayed in Porec for our Honeymoon in 1987.

There are a number of good eateries all within walking distance and there are also several bars close by. Our favourite eating place was the Konoba Prisada; excellent food at a reasonable price, good atmosphere, down to earth and the owner was very friendly.

I would recommend this house to anyone who wants a nice quiet retreat with the option of livlier surrounding a short distance away.

Decent property but some niggles

We stayed at the property in August 2010 and on the whole had a good time. We certainly made the most of the property's proximity to several excellent restaurants, beaches and historical towns. The house itself was spotlessly clean when we arrived and the cleaners had done a first rate job. The property was also in excellent condition. The gardeners also arrived to tidy the outside areas and the pool was also maintained during our stay. The small areas that were slightly disappointing included:

1. very difficult to use the drive in a "normal" car

2. the property being so overlooked. An adjoining property has two windows that are directly over the pool area. We had local music blasting out of one of the windows for the first two afternoons but as we were very quiet and didn't retaliate this stopped for the remander of the week.

3. the very small nature of the "cosy" third bedroom - also very hot indeed during our week at the property.

4. occasional and unfortunate smell from the septic tank (to be expected I guess)

5. although nothing specifically to do with the property, issues with mosquitos. Despite using several deterrants (sprays, creams, all-night plugs) one of our children was bitten over twenty times through one night.

Despite the above we had a good holiday and it's important to counter the issues described above by writing that the property is located in a good position from where to tour the whole of Istria. There are three good and competitively priced restaurants within easy walking distance. There is also a relatively easy alternative to the issue of parking on the "drive". We feel that the property is actually far better suited to four people.

Istria is a beautiful area of Croatia and Rovinj, Porec and several of the hill-top towns are must-see places.

Owner's Response: These are all fair comments, but a few don't quite capture the full situation. A few specific points: - Yes, the drive is very rough - we are working on that to improve it - The property that overlooks the pool is generally not in use - this is the first time in 5 years we've had any reports of any regular activity there or indeed even heard that the shutters are open! - Septic tanks can smell occasionally (especially in restored old proprties where the choice of location of bathroom is restricted). Usually putting a jug of water down the drains in the bathroom floors cures the problem within an hour or so (there are instructions in the information pack) We are sorry to hear about the mosquitoes ... Istria normally has a level of mozzies typical for a warm climate, but this has been an unusually bad year all over (including a different strain that has bitten even the locals!).

A beautiful house in a fantastic location

We had a wonderful week in this fantastic house which is perfectly located for visiting the wonderful old towns of Groznjan (our favourite) and Mutovan as well as the lovely coastal towns of Porec, Vrsar and Rovinj etc. The house is very spacious, tasefully decorated and extremely well-equipped with a secluded garden in a peaceful Istrian village. Our children (aged 5, 10, 11 and13) loved the pool while we prefered sipping local wine in the shade before setting off on our next adventure.

The house has a couple of good restaurants (Toni's was great with good food and very friendly service) and a small corner shop within walking distance. We drove to beaches in the afternoons and prefered those near Vrsar and Rovinj but Porec is a great to wander around in the evening.

We highly recommend this house to anyone looking for a relaxing holiday in the sun as well as those willing to explore the many delights Istria has to offer. The web site just doesn't do the house justice!

Great find

We were a group of 6 girls who had a great relaxing holiday. The house is stunning, much nicer than we expected which had everything we needed. Luckily for us the weather was great so we managed to have lots of Rose Wine on the terrace. Brnobici is a very sleepy village so if your after a wild time its not for you. We loved it and were delighted we didn’t hear another British voice.

Whilst we did BBQ in one night we generally ate out locally as its so easy. We definitely preferred the pizzas at Robis and the local restaurant about 8 minute stroll away, where the local food and atmosphere is stunning and you can sit out side and enjoy the evening (don’t forget the mozzi spray!), both of which are good value for money.

It is an ideal place for getting out and about, we really liked Motovun (we went late afternoon and had a lovely glass of wine overlooking the stunning landscape at sunset) and Rovinj. Driving is pretty easy and the roads are good. We also did a kayak trip from Rovinj up the lim Fiord that was fun, although don’t expect lots of help, information of guidance on your trip! (http://www.kayak.com.hr/TourLim.aspx). After all of that exertion we treated ourselves to some hog roast on the way home, a local must!

A fabulous house in a fabulous destination

Great facilities provided which met all requirements. The view from the top terrace is just amazing. We especially enjoyed BBQs and alfresco dining. The pool was refreshingly cool. Parking was quite a challenge, so we parked at Tonis and bought a few drinks! It was great to be within walking distance of 2 restaurants. Both offered friendly & efficient service and great value food. Istria has beautiful scenery with lots of old-world villages and gorgious coastal towns. Porec was far nicer than the Rough Guide had led us to expect – we liked it! Rovinj is a must see. All in all it was a wonderful 2 weeks.

Buying the 'dream' is never easy and it took me over a year's hard house-hunting to find it. Being a romantic fool, I wanted an old stone Istrian house - a slice of history. Being practical, I wanted it in a village with restaurants and shops all within walkable distance - who wants to drive on holiday, if you don't have to? I also wanted it to be near the sea, have room for a pool and, if possible, a sea view. With Brnobici I found exactly what I was looking for: a comfortable 3-bedroom place, full of interesting features, panoramic sea views, a pool and a restaurant across the road!

Lying on the hillside of sleepy Brnobici, the house has panoramic views of the Istrian coast. From Brnobici, it is a pleasant stroll through country lanes to the adjoining villages of Kastelir and Labinci. In the area there are plenty of locals selling their own wine, olive oil and rakija (grappa), as well as several shops for all your supplies, and several good restaurants.

For such a small area there is an amazingly large amount to do in Istria. As well as all the usual seaside attractions there are numerous attractive coastal towns and unspolit hill-top, stone villages. Here are a few:

Porec – the main local centre has a 12th Century Basilica which is a world heritage site in the lovely old centre. Also plenty of restaurants and beaches (about 10 minutes drive).

Rovinj – Rovinj is one of the jewels of the Adriatic. It is a beautiful, old coastal town whichis totally unspoilt. Many of our guests have also gone for dinner in the evening and said it is magical.

Groznjan – this lovely hill-top village is a musicians and handicraft enclave. It has charming handicraft shops, no modern development and fantastic views.

Novigrad – just up the coast is a lovely coastal town, much sleepier than Porec.

Motovun – is a perfect hill-top, walled town. It’s a steep walk up from the parking, but if you park in the car park at the bottom there is a bus.

Limski Canal – this flooded gorge is a wooded inlet from the sea. It lies between Porec and Rovinj and the drive beside it is beautiful. If you like mussles, it is the place to go as they are grown in the gorge and served fresh from the sea. It is also possible to visit by boat on one of the many boat trips available in Porec.

Pula – the biggest town in Istria, is home to the 6th largest ampithetre in the world. It is perfectly preserved and hosts concerts in the summer (we've seen Tom Jones and Nora Jones (honest a coincidence of surname) there and they were wonderful nights out). There are various other Roman ruins in Pula.

Vrsar – between Porec and Rovinj is another lovely coastal town. The town cascades down the hillside to the sea. Make sure you get right to the top as the views are spectacular.

In-land hill villages – totally unspoilt and a beautiful drive away are several other beautiful inland hill-top villages including Roc, Hum, Draguc and Gracisce. For me these are the best bit of Istria. They look as if time's stood still and even in high summer you'll often have them all to yourselves.

Just over the border in Slovenia, there’s the delightful seaside town of Piran. You can also visit the world famous Lipanja horses and the Plitvise caves (the largest in the world). Ljubljana, the capital, is worth a visit, but it’s 2.5 hours away.

Apart from sightseeing, Baredine Caves is only a few minutes drive away. Also close-by are two water parks and an adventure park (zip lines etc), as well as paragliding, horse riding, karting and paint-balling. On the coast there are the usual amusements - banana boat, parasailing, boat hire and trips, diving etc.

Istria's great for bike riding and the area round Kastelir has lots of quiet lanes. Bike hire can be arranged before you come (just let me know) and bikes can be delivered to the property for you, or there are plenty of places for bike hire in Porec.

As I've mentioned, having restuarants and shops within walking distance are great. The pool's great on a hot day and, if you want more water and fun, the coast is only ten minutes away. With it's warm, sunny hillside location, Kastelir has long been one of Istria's more sought-after holiday locations (Brnobici is one of its districts). Because of this there is an unusually wide selection of restaurants in the area. Luckily, it's also managed to maintain it's sleepy, village atmosphere: traffic is light to non-existant and walking the country lanes between the different districts is a lovely way to while away an afternoon - especially as you'll end up walking past a great selection of local wineries and olive oil places with some of the best wines in Istria on offer.
