About the property

Halfway between the vineyards of Bergerac and Cahors, our beautifully restored former farmhouse now offers all modern comfort for up to six persons.

In the main house, the large living room (11 x 5.5m.) has a large open fireplace at one end (surrounded by a large L-shaped sofa and easy chair) and the kitchen area at the other. With a six-burner stove and two ovens, you will have enough space to cook for your family and friends (if that's your hobby. After all, you ARE on holiday ;)). The wooden table sits ten.

Between both ends of the room, there's enough square meters of blonde oak floor to make you want to dance. The excellent stereo system helps here...

Alternatively, if the weather permits, you can go and cook and eat in the outside kitchen, under the roof of what once was the tobacco barn. Or use the barbecue...

An open staircase leads to the second floor, with wc, an open bathroom (very large shower, two sinks) and the master bedroom (7 x 5.5m., double bed).

Next to the main house are the scullery and next, two bedrooms, each with its own bathroom (two sinks, shower and wc). Both bedrooms have their own entrance and terrace.

All three bedrooms have their own hot water supply, so there's always enough for everybody.

One children's bed is available.

Our house has been restored under the strict rules in France on building or renovating in the vicinity of historic buildings. In this case the tiny 12th/13th century church in the village (population 65), at 500m.

On the inside however, we have made sure modern standards are met. Furniture, decoration and (especially) lighting create an atmosphere which is sadly missing in most holiday rentals, where old, worn furniture and inadequate lighting seem the norm.

Satellite-tv (including BBC, and on a 42" calibrated plasma) and WiFi are available (although connection speed is very low). Music is delivered by a good stereo system and Sonos (or CD. You'll have to bring your own cd's; all ours have been ripped to the hard disc next to the desk and are available through the Sonos). And of course there are enough reading lights to just sit and read a book in comfort.

However, you will probably spend most of your time outside. Across the lawn on the courtyard and next to the outside kitchen, the former pigsty and henhouse are now toolshed and gardenshed. Next to those, there's parking space in the old stables for two cars.

This spacious house is ideal for families, or for (up to) three couples.

Dordogne, with its moderate climate and rolling landscape of fields and forests, is perfect for cycling. Climbs may be steep (but shortish) but you can make it relatively easier for yourself if you stay in the valleys.

It's less than 15 miles to the river Dordogne, with its numerous beaches and canoe rentals. Two golf courses (18 and 9 holes) are even closer.

For fresh croissants and other food, the nearest shops and restaurants and are at 6 km., in one of the most beautiful medieval fortified villages France has to offer.

Back in the house for the night, you will experience the silence that descends over the land when the sun sets. When the stars come out, the absence of streetlghts in the vicinity means you will see an abundance of stars. And with a full moon, it's amazing how much it lights up the night, casting dark shadows around the house.

In the almost absolute silence of the night, you may sometimes hear an owl calling from the woods, but the absence of noise will make you sleep deeper than usual. You'll wake up refreshed, ready for another blissful day in the sun!

What makes this farmhouse unique

If you ever rented a holiday home, chance is you were disappointed by the old, worn furniture, inadequate lightning and sagging beds.

That's certainly not the case in this house: we live here ourselves for months at a time, so we made sure we're as comfortable as in our other home.

A beautiful home in a gorgeous location.

  • 5 of 5

Two weeks of bliss in a lovely part of France. My wife and I took the brave step of sharing Lacouynes with both sets of parents well into their eighties. The house with its three generous and separate ensuite bedrooms, with terraces connected to the two ground floor rooms, gave us plenty of opportunity to enjoy quiet time apart, yet we could all come together in the large living room and particularly spend early evenings around the table in the outdoor dining area - barbequing is hard to avoid.

Bart and Jacqueline made us very welcome and had kept in touch beforehand to make sure we slipped immediately into enjoying our holiday. We lacked for nothing.

St Marcory itself is lovely but quiet, with no facilities to speak of (the advantages are the quiet, with beautiful skies and stars). Monpazier, however, turned out to be the favourite of our Bastide towns (not an easy choice!), and is only a few minutes down the road. The Thursday market is great fun for local produce and gifts, but the shops cater for all needs anyway. Most towns in the area have a full calendar of cultural and more light-hearted events and we also found two cracking restaurants in Monpazier - La Bastide and our favourite, La Privelege du Perigord (try and get a table on the terrace). That said, there are many others in the town that we didn't have time to try, that looked equally inviting.

With swimming in the river at Limeuil, glorious chateaus and wonderful wines, what is not to like!? 'We'll be back'

Wonderful property, fantastic location

  • 5 of 5

A beautifully presented property in a fantastic location, close to a wonderful local village (Monpazier) and to all the attractions of the Perigord/Dordogne. With all this, however, the property is super quiet and away from the hustle and bustle of the summer tourists - a perfect place to relax, enjoy fabulous food and fine wine. Ideal for several couples sharing or a family. We had an absolutely wonderful week here. WiFi is available, but the external lines to the property are not reliable, but there is mobile data coverage at the house. Nonetheless, it is not the place to sit at a computer!

Owner's Response: Thank you so much for your positive review! We're sorry for the lack of internet connection. Our phone company is unusuably slow in repairing overhead cables damaged by falling branches or trees but, now that roaming within the EU has become relatively cheap, we are glad it has not been too much of an inconvenience.

Monpazier, one of the most beautiful medieval villages in France and at only 6 kilometres (4 miles) from our home, is a must-see. As are Beynac and Castelnaud, with their impressive castles.

The Château des Milandes, also in Castelnaud (, celebrates the life of Josephine Baker and is also a favourite with the kids, thanks to its birds of prey demonstrations and children's workshops. The château is surrounded by a beautiful park and gardens.
