About the property

Quirky eclectic open plan barn with large family bedroom and stunning views

A beautifully located Dutch style barn with lovely open plan sitting room with breakfast bar and spacious well equipped kitchen area with a gas hob and electric oven cooker, retro style fridge with freezer compartment a separate boot\utility room with dishwasher, washing machine and microwave. Open plan stairs from the kitchen lead to a landing with bathroom having roll top bath with shower over, toilet and sink, a few steps lead to the open plan large family bedroom with a super kingsize bed and a day bed which converts to 2 singles or a double bed. The barn is set in an idyllic situation nestled in a wild meadow and within the grounds of the historic Brede Place (take a look on the internet). This newly converted barn not only overlooks the award winning gardens of the Sheephouse (where Laurence Olivier proposed to Vivien Leigh) and the picturesque Brede Valley, but is surrounded by beautiful walks along the 1 km secluded drive, which leads to meandering public footpaths, which offer the opportunity to explore abundant plant and wildlife. Fresh produce is available from the Sheephouse kitchen garden when in season. To keep your life up to date, Internet is available either hardwired or wireless via a tabletop 3G/4G Dongle.

20 minute drive away is the amazing Camber Sands beach, complete with sand dunes and miles of golden sands or Rye Harbour with its nature reserve with a variety of rare birds and a path to Winchelsea's pebble beach. Even closer is the historic Cinque Port of Rye (where Mapp and Lucia was filmed) here you can wander the cobbled streets within the Citadel with its quintessentially English houses - visit the Norman church and climb up to it's viewing tower with a birdseye view of the area, visit the Ypres tower (built 1249) or the gun gardens, relax in a variety of coffee shops, pubs and restaurants and browse around the converted grain warehouses for bric-a-brac and collectables at the quayside. Rye also has a great independent cinema where as well as current movies you can be lucky enough to catch an opera or ballet streamed live from the Royal Opera House in London or perhaps a Shakespeare play from the Globe theatre.

30 minutes drive away is the Hastings National Park (the Fire Hills) which has outstanding views and miles of walks accessed from Fairlight or the East Hill funicular railway at Hastings old town. The old town boasts the largest beach launched fishing fleet in Europe with fisherman's huts selling freshly caught fish and shellfish which is very popular, as is the Jerwood Gallery and newly opened Hastings pier or perhaps a game of crazy golf along the seafront.

National Trust Houses and gardens such as Sissinghurst, Pashley Manor, Batemans, Great Dixter, Hole Park and Lamb House (situated in Rye and where the author Henry James lived) are also easily accessed.

If you fancy going further a field (approx 45 minutes) Eastbourne and its Marina are well worth a visit - the Marina has a very continental feel where the restaurants, with plenty of outside seating, are clustered around the Marina's main harbour. Dungerness with it's 25 mile narrow gauge steam railway to Hythe is also a great day out. Travel 45 minutes and enjoy some designer outlet shopping at Ashford, where you can also pick up the high speed rail service which will take you to London in around 38 mins. Ashford International will take you to Paris or Brussels the options are endless.

About Diane Niall

I am a retired lady living in this wonderful location with my husband Graham and our huge Neopolitan Mastiff dog. I have 2 sons and 9 grandchildren and spend much time at the beautiful Camber beach.

Diane Niall purchased this barn in 2012

Why Diane Niall chose Brede

If you need a break from the hustle and bustle of every day life come to the relaxed seclusion of the Sheephouse Barn - the area has its own microclimate and often misses the rain of surrounding areas - there are so many places to see and go within a short drive - fantastic for both country and beach breaks. For peace of mind friendly help is always at hand from us at the Sheephouse.

Although the barn is non-smoking please feel free to smoke in the gardens.

What makes this barn unique

The barn is situated within the grounds of Brede Place which is of great historical interest - a dell runs parallel with the drive and is allegedly haunted (a book by the acclaimed sculptress Claire Sheridan claims to have seen the ghost of Martha a housemaid at Brede Place). However on my many walks through the dell I have not

encountered any ghostly presence!!!

The barn exceeded our expectations. Very quiet and tucked away in 100 acres of stunning scenery. Highly recommended for a real 'get away from it all' few days.

The Barn at 'The Sheephouse' has been beautifully and tastefully converted by the owners Diane & Graham. Everything you require for a relaxing holiday has been supplied with very special extra touches, like fresh fruit, milk and even a bottle of wine. The Barn was very spacious and very clean (it was like home from home).

Location makes it very easy for days out to Rye & Camber Sands and other sights.

Les & Heather would like to say a big thanks to Di & Graham for their friendly warm welcome and hope to return in the future to the Barn.

Just perfect ⭐️

Our wish was for a little 'get away from it all' break just after Christmas and to see in the new year. We were delighted when we arrived, it was everything we'd hoped for, it was so welcoming, warm and cosy with a lovely lit Christmas tree. There were so many thoughtful touches throughout including delicious festive treats. 🥂?

We had a perfect stay in the lovely Barn, thank you so much.

Beautiful setting, beautiful barn.

  • 5 of 5

Me and my husband wanted a short break away before our first baby arrives in December. We wanted something remote but an easy distance from things to see and do. The Sheephouse was perfect. Gorgeous setting, and the décor is perfect to our taste. Local amenities close by for groceries. Highly recommend the carvery roast at the Red Lion pub just a 5 minute drive away. We also enjoyed walking along camber sands, a visit to hastings and just generally enjoyed the autumn weather.

We met Diane just as we were leaving as we kept missing eachother. A lovely lady with an extremely hospitable manner. Would highly recommend a short break here!

A stay we'll never forget!

  • 5 of 5

We were looking for a special place to stay on our wedding night and Sheephouse Barn was everything we dreamed of. The barn itself is beautifully styled and full of character and charm and the setting in the middle of the countryside is just stunning. Di and Graham were incredibly kind and thoughtful hosts, treating us like old friends rather than strangers - they'd even left us some bubbles in the fridge to celebrate! Hope we'll be back in the years to come!

The Barn is situated in a very secluded rural environment at the end of a 1km private driveway and stands alone with the exception of Sheephouse, locally there are woodland walks, the ancient Cinque Port of Rye with swimming pool fitness centre, bars restaurants and antique shops. Camber Sands and Winchelsea Beach are local to Rye and at Hastings the new pier amusements, crazy golf mini funfair etc.
