About the property

Teachín is a traditional stone wall Irish cottage located in Ballinacleava (Baile na tSleibhe) in the hills 2 miles outside of Downings and on the Wild Atlantic Way. The cottage is in a rural location (in a Gaeltacht area) and is perfect for somebody seeking relaxation through peace and quiet. The nearest neighbours are only occasionally at home and are located 200m away. When guests arrive, often the first comment is to reflect on how quiet the location is.

Over the last year the cottage has been fully renovated in a style that brings its heritage value to the fore. The cottage has 2 double bedrooms and a bed deck with skylight to the rear that is suitable for age 10 and up. There is a living room with eating area, kitchen, shower room, a boot room for those wet days and muddy walks and a small utility room with washing machine and tumble dryer. The boot room is also a good location for a dog's bed. As we wanted to keep the heritage of the house as much as possible we do not have central heating, instead we have a stove in the living room and energy efficient electric radiators in each bedroom and the shower room.

The house has a parking area suitable for two cars and a large garden for relaxing in and reading or just sitting to take in the stunning view over Sheephaven Bay, the Ards forest park and Muckish mountain.

The house is ideal for photographers as we still have a relatively dark night sky to the rear (north) of our house. As the address of the house suggests we are situated on a small mountain and the cottage is a good base for hill walkers. Downings is a 35 minute walk away by road while Dooey (Dubaih), Tra na Rossan, the Singing pub and Melmore Head are all within a few hours walk away if you are prepared to walk over the mountain through moor and heather. For the more serious walker the Glenveagh mountains home to Errigal, Muckish and the poison Glen are just a 30 minute drive away. Glenveagh Castle and National Park are also well worth a visit. In the park there are mapped out trails and guided tours available.

For golfers the Rosapenna hotel and golf course is located just three miles away.

The Rosguill Peninsula also provides opportunities for water sports such as windsurfing, deep-sea diving, sea angling & boat charters. The Jaws Watersports shop located in Downings also offers courses for children and adults. A day trip to Tory island can also be booked via the Tory Island ferry.

Letterkenny is just a 40 minute drive away and the walled City of Derry 60 minutes.

What makes this cottage unique

Rural, excellent views and very quiet. If you want to hear the wind in the trees, the birds cheeping, the hum of a bumblebee or the sound of the sea then this is the place for you.

Everyone needs to experience this place

This cottage is everything and more. We were fortunate to have brilliant weather for February. However, even if it had rained non stop we would have been more than happy to keep the stove lit and soak up the silence and peacefulness of this quaint and perfectly formed abode.

Peaceful, reclusive & very relaxing

  • 5 of 5

Stayed here over Christmas & it was Just what we hoped for. A traditional, cosy cottage in a reclusive Location. After a few hicups trying to find & enter the cottage as it was dark; we were pleasantly surprised to find that the cottage had already been decorated for Christmas.

Sitting by the log stove with the Christmas lights on with nothing but darkness outside; really made it feel festive for us.

It was very cold during our stay, & as stated there is no central heating. So it's advisable to read the supplied manual for operation of the electric radiators. This manual also explains everything you need to know regarding the cottage and surrounding area.

Although there was fuel supplied, we found the stove consumed it quite quickly even when dampened down, so it is advisable to bring more especially during the winter months. We brought two sacks and used them both in the three days we stayed.

The cottage is well equipped with everything you need for cooking or cleaning (including an iron which isn't mentioned on the website). The boot room is a good place to keep your dog after a few hours spent either at the beach or surrounding hills. The cottage offers lovely views of the bay & stunning mountains which you can admire from the top bedroom or looking out from the split living room door.

The cottage has a low entry door which requires you to stoop ,so be warned, as each of us banged our heads time and again. The parking area has space for two vehicles but just about & it's quite tight, so it can be a little tricky manouvering two vehicles into it. Due to the reclusive Location of the cottage, it can be difficult at times to get a phone signal or internet access, especially for international calls. But if you're coming here to get your 'head showered' then this is a benefit.

Can't comment on pubs or restaurants nearby as nowhere was serving food when we did venture out.

Would love to come back here in perhaps the summer months and get a different take on it.

Owner's Response: I'm really glad to hear that you enjoyed your stay and you are right it is important to remember to duck when going in and out of the boot room entry door. Once you are in you can always use the other door up at the living room. It is just in wet weather I find it easiest to use the boot room. Again I'm glad to hear that you enjoyed yourselves and enjoyed the peace and quiet.

A perfect place to spend the New Year

  • 5 of 5

Staying at Teachin was just as I expected having read the previous reviews. It was accurately described by both the owner and those who had stayed there as being the perfect place to get away from it all (it is about a mile from the main road). The house was very well equipped, was easy to heat and very homely.

Cosy Rural Retreat

  • 5 of 5

We arrived late and were welcomed with a lit fire and Christmas lights. The cottage was clean and tidy with everything we needed for a cosy weekend away. We explored nearly beaches and went to the local Harbour Bar which we would recommend.

We hope to be back next year for another winter weekend. Thanks to William and Maryann for being so accommodating and for quick communications.

A beautiful, peaceful, cosy retreat!

  • 5 of 5

We enjoyed a week staying in this beautiful cottage. It was the perfect spot to explore the surrounding area, plus to set off walking across the hills. We experienced the full variety of weather - sunny and warm on arrival, then rain, and then the wind... but when inside, with the stove on we were warm and cosy. It was the perfect holiday getaway for us. We'll be back!
