Why Ella Grima chose Assisi area

Relaxed, bohemian vibe out in the wilds yet close to civilization. An organic garden and woodland yurt add to the convivial, communal idyll.

Once you've wrenched your gaze from pool-side panoramas over the forested flanks of Monte Subasio National Park, and had your senses tickled by the sweet orchestra of lavender, Russian sage and Mediterranean herbs that assail you – strategically planted to waft their perfumes into the apartments – have a look inside. The mural and decorative works of artist Jennifer Holmes embellish the homely, colourful, bohemian interiors. Antique kettles and pots, bunches of dried herbs suspended from ceilings, well-stocked wine racks and flora 'n' fauna painted surrounds to mirrors and French windows, all lend themselves to a relaxed vibe, while an organic vegetable garden, and a yurt tucked away in the woods, add to the communal, convivial idyll.

There's WiFi if you need it but it won't distract you from the views; lap them up from your balconied terrace. Better still, take the book of local walks provided, add a picnic, and head for the wooded hills.

ASSISI, the nearest town, is the home of St. Francis and his female counterpart, St. Clare. For seven centuries Assisi has been a focus for pilgrimage, and the area is rich in traditions associated with the saints. The town itself has been carefully preserved, its steep medieval streets winding between churches and houses of rose-coloured stone.

Within a 60 km (40 mile) radius of Casa Rosa are the ancient hill towns of Gubbio, Spello, Cortona, Spoleto, Orvieto and Todi, each with its medieval centre. Perugia, the region's capital, is 25 km. (15 miles) away, a stylish university city with striking medieval architecture, important Etruscan remains and major works of art.

To the West, Lake Trasimeno offers swimming and water sports for most of the year. To the South and East lies Umbria's wildest scenery - the forests and gorges of the Valnerina, the mountain peaks and remote alpine pastures of the Monti Sibillini.

Other Activities: Hiking, Bird watching, Pilgrim destination, Historical cities

A truly special place

  • 5 of 5

We were in the area for a couple of nights over Easter and Casa Rosa was suggested to us. I'm very glad we decided to stay here!

We arrived late on the Saturday night over the Easter weekend. Assisi was busy, but we followed the sat nav halfway up the hill until Alessandro found us and we follwed him the rest of the way. It was at that point I knew we were going to enjoy our stay!

In the morning we awoke to amazing view of the land and had a traditional Italian Easter breakfast, prepared freshly by Alessandro and Ella. It was simply devine.

We were told about a couple of places to go and see during the day and were suggested somewhere for an evening meal. I can't remember to the name of the restaurant, but all the food was cooked over an open fire, it was amazing!

We spend 2 nights there before we had to leave, but can't recommenced Casa Rosa highly enough. The place is magical, the hosts, Ella and Alessandro are amazing, they are both super friendly (and speak great English) and nothing is too much trouble for them!

Quiet, relaxing, truly wonderful – spectacular!

  • 5 of 5

We loved our time at Casa Rosa. We stayed in the smaller studio, which was cozy and perfectly set up for a comfortable stay in this truly inspiring location. It is a quick drive to Assisi, but worlds away from the touristy feel and hustle. Ella and her husband Alessandro were lovely hosts, very available and friendly. We also were pleasantly surprised to have access to the washing machine and also Alessandro's delicious frozen meals that were ready to pop into our oven, these were some of the best meals we had in Italy! The studio was a joy to be in – great views, sunshine, it even smelled good! We hope to be back someday.
