About this property

"Casa da Malta" - Country Cottage - Neighbourhood of Évora (30 km)

"Casa da Malta" is a local designation, to a building apart from the main one, where temporary workers were lodged (the ones named “malteses”).
Therefore, we named "casa da malta" this house, rebuilt in 2003 from old ruins, close to the owners house but completely independent.
Private home, tipicaly of the Alentejo region – ground floor, long rectangle, door and windows exposed to east. Inserted in a 23,500 sqm property, located in a rural environment, at the arrival at Escoural village (department of Montemor-o-Novo), on the southern slope of the Monfurado Hills. Gives the kind of confort which is supposed to find in a traditional rural house with thick old whitewhashed walls and small windows (protection against external lower and higher temperatures), where you can look the stars, footwalking, buy warm bread,...
Obs: A cradle is available, and a sofa bed allows, in exceptional cases, lodging two extra people.

Fabulous location
The property is a beautiful traditional style cottage next to the owner’s property & surrounded by gardens & fields. There are plenty of private nooks to find to sit in to either enjoy the sun or to find some shade. The house itself is perfect, very comfortable with everything you need. Maria & Fernando were excellent hosts & provided a much appreciated welcome selection of bread, milk, cheese, fruit & wine for our first evening. Maria spoiled us with treats of pastries turning up on the doorstep whenever they were there. The cottage is on the edge of the village which is delightful & there are several decent supermarkets in the nearby town of Montemor. The location is perfect for visits to Evora & the pretty towns around & about all with their own castles. The castle at Montemor is one of the best although the guide books seem to dismiss the town. I can’t fault our stay, absolutely fantastic.

Rural paradise.
We spent five wonderful nights and days, at this exceptionally hosted and well appointed holiday home. The most outstanding feature is the owners, who have over the years built a perfect rural retreat from almost nothing. Their generous nature and genuine care for their guests, shines in everything they do. Communication was excellent, by phone and in person, before and during our stay. Both Maria Emiliana and Fernando spoke English, much better than our Portuguese! We were welcomed by Fernando, who give us a fully comprehensive, personalised guide to the property. As others have said they set the highest standards of hosting both by their attention to the needs of their guests and the quality of the fixtures and fittings in the house. The bed and the bed linens were so luxurious that sleeping was a delight! The property sits on the edge of a small village but which, nonetheless, offers some shops and bars and restaurants. However, a larger town, Montemor, is just a short drive away where you’ll find two supermarkets that sell fresh foods and great wine selections too. If you’re looking for a calm and relaxing rural setting look no further. We recommend that you book this holiday home without any hesitation you won’t be disappointed.

Great place with fantastic hosts
My wife and I spent six days in Escoural and had a fantastic time. Our hosts were exception - they gave us great tips on what to see and where to go as well as giving us an abundance of food products. The scenery around the area gives you a real insight into life in Portugal

A peaceful house in a quiet village
We had a very pleasant stay in Escoural. The hosts, Maria Emilia and Fernando, were very welcoming and brought us breakfast treats on a couple of occasions. The village itself is quite low-key but there are a number of interesting sites and places within easy reach. A highlight was a guided visit to the local caves, where you can see images made by people thousands of years ago.

Great quiet getaway
The property was exactly as described with many homey touches, including tasty treats left outside our door in the morning. It is a great area to explore with day trips and has good local restaurants. Thanks for a lovely stay.

Couple (ex-civil servant of the Environment General Directorate + consultant hydraulics ing.), living along the year at Cascais (Lisbon region), in principle we will be there for your arrival and leaving.

Why they chose this property

Rural atmosphere, although on the edge of the village.

What makes this property unique

At the entry of the village and beside a road, we are not isolated and we go walking to take a coffee or so. However, the configuration of the buildings ("your" house and a small backyard protected from glances from outside) creates a little private street out of the traffic noise.
Certificate "Quality" (AHRESP - Associação da Hotelaria, Restauração e Similares de Portugal) awarded in March 2018.
