About Sally Cartwright

Hi this is a photo of Geoff and I, Bethan and Lewis on the roof terrace in 2006 when the house was first restored. We live in Northamptonshire and first visited Essaouira in 2004 and fell in love with the town and the wonderful people. Darsal was deralict when we first purchased it with no elcetricity or running water. We put a lot of time and thought into restoring the Riad and have had many lovely holidays there since. Bethan and Lewis still enjoy visiting and lots of happy memories of childhood holidays in Darsal.

Sally Cartwright purchased this house in 2004

Why Sally Cartwright chose Essaouira

Darsal is a lovely property, we loved Essaouira, it's people and the the old medina. It has a wonderful feel of being somewhere colourful and viberant, whilst being set in a quiet street in the centre, you can get away from it all and still only a stones throw from the beach, souks and cafe's.

What makes this house unique

Darsal is full of surprises, you approach it from a quiet narrow street and once you open the front dooe, you enter into a room with a little couryard and lovely sitting areas. It then goes on to the first floor with a light airy master bedroom and a second bedroom, with a mezzanine bed which we built especially for Lewis, as a den. He had seen one in another riad we had visited. the main lounge is on the next floor, all open plan and a lovely area for relaxing, reading and children to play. There is a kitchen area, great for taking cool drinks up to the terrace. Once up on the terrace is a little onsuite bedroom with a lovely large window to let in all the light. A brilliant house to explore!

Guestbook comments from the owner

Thank you, we all had a fantastic time in Essaouira- everyone was very friendly, we were really quite sad to leave. We really fell in love with the place, and intend to return Oct '08. Aeida is a wonderful person, she helped make our stay very special indeed. Your house is lovely, we particulary loved the terrace, and truly enjoyed our stay there. Once again, thank you very much. K Willaims August 07.

The riad was lovely - loads of room to spread out and find some peace and who would of thought that behind the front door there would be such a haven of tranquillity right in the middle of the medina? Ayeda lived up to her reputation and cooked what were probably the best meals we had whilst in Morocco. Nourredine was very helpful in setting up the excursions and providing some local insights. We had a really good holiday and we shall certainly come back to Essaouira. Thanks once again for the use of your riad - we had a very memorable and

enjoyable holiday and we would like to retur

Perfect Essaouira Home Base

  • 5 of 5

We spent a month in the raid and loved being part of life in the medina. The house was in a perfect location to walk to everything, but we did rent a car to explore areas south of Essaouira. There was lots of room in the riad for our small family of three, and we loved spending time on the roof top patio enjoying the sun. Thanks for everything!

A beautifully authentic riad

  • 5 of 5

This beautiful riad really was the most amazing place to stay. It was the first time both my partner and myself had visited Morocco and I feel there was no better property we could have stayed in. The 5 story riad is so beautiful, the master bedroom in particular as it looks down onto the centre courtyard which can be highlighted at night time. Sally and the house man Fouad ensured the smooth and easy transfer from airport to riad and while we were there Fouad checked up on us to make sure we were getting on okay and also organised a trip for us to Marrakesh for the day (really worth the 2 hour taxi drive). For only 30 dirhams the maid Aieda made sure we began each day with a substantial breakfast including pastries, pancakes, eggs, yoghurts, bread and fruit and yes that is all included in one breakfast!! The beach was a short 15 minute walk away however we spent most of our time at the other end of the bay at a water sports company called Explora where we had surf lessons, went quad biking and hired some Stand Up Paddle boards. Essaouria is definitely not short of amazing places to eat, we both had some really delicious meals while we were there, 2 of which were cooked by Aieda in the riad! All in all a very relaxing holiday whilst enjoying an authentic cultural experience of Morocco.

A tranquil bolthole

  • 5 of 5

Stayed for a few days in April 2017, family of four (two children, 9 & 7) and the house was perfect, everything you could require and a short stroll away from the beach/souks, would definitely recommend it and return again.

Perfect location inside the medina

  • 4 of 5

We stayed here for 4 nights to celebrate my big birthday with my grown up children. It was amazing value for money and we really enjoyed our stay here. Aida the housekeeper was fabulous and she made our breakfasts every morning with a big smile which were delicious especially the fresh orange juice, coffee and pancakes. Fouad the manager was very helpful, met us at the main entrance to the medina and showed us to our Riad. He organised horse riding on the beach for 2 hours with Ranch De Diabat which was great fun even though none of us had been horse riding before! The ranch was immaculate and the horses were in great condition.

Eating out was more expensive than we thought but you can eat out cheaply as well.

We all loved Ocean Vagabonds for lunch. It is right on the beach, lovely lunches and great to watch the camels and horses and surfers. They even have a few sunbeds there. Also very friendly.

We enjoyed walking round the Souks and fishing port and enjoyed a great fish lunch in the port on our last day.

We all felt the outdoor space at the Riad was a bit tired and could do with a bit of a makeover but considering the amazing value we can't really complain.

Would definitely recommend this Riad.

Owner's Response: Thank you for your review. I'm pleased you enjoyed Essaouira and were well looked after. Following your email about the terrace looking tired we have arranged for everything to be painted for the summer. Due to the humidity and winter rains with the house being on the coast the terrace does suffer from the weather the most but we do paint every 2 years in the spring. So time for a refresh. Again I'm pleased you had a lovely holiday and fouad and Aieda looked after you.

Excellent Riad, beautifully restored, with all amenities

  • 5 of 5

Darsal is very comfortable and quiet, with 3 excellent bathrooms, and suited us perfectly. We were out most days, but as it was winter we spent many nights watching films by the open fire, which was very cozy. There are many great restaurants within walking distance, some very cheap, others at varying prices, and the fish cabins at the port entrance are fun to visit, choose your own fish, and enjoy it whilst watching the world go by. We spent long hours on the beach, and sometimes spent the day at Beach and Friends.Darsal met all our requirements, and initially we found the approach to the building along the tiny alley rather off putting, but after a few days friendly neighbours who accepted us and greeted us every time we passed, and the bustling medina became very acceptable. . Aieda kept the house beautifully, was always happy and smiling, made us a lovely breakfast most mornings, unless we went out, and cooked us several memorable evening meals, and Faoud was always available if required to iron out any problems, arrange transport, outings etc. We especially liked restaurants. The Loft, the Patio and laTolerance, and would be happy to come back here at anytime, and if you are a keen photographer, do not hesitate to spend time here as it is a most photogenic spot, where you can spend hours in the fishing port, the medina, the beach and shooting magnificent sunsets

Fantastic holiday in Darsal Essaouira

  • 5 of 5

Loved Darsal. It was perfect for a family plus grandmother. Four teenage kids were a bit squeezed into a two double bed set-up (to ensure grandmother was accommodated in a large ensuite) but we knew that in advance and they were fine. Otherwise, very spacious, atmospheric and beautifully furnished accommodation, with plenty of room for everyone to find their own cosy corner if they wanted. Excellent WiFi which was a non-negotiable pre-condition (unfortunately) for the teenagers. Fantastic location in the Medina which is easy to navigate once you've got your bearings. We noted an edge of town Carrefour on a bicycle trip, but everything we needed was available in the great variety of stores in the Medina. We enjoyed Aeida's homecooked tagines (and chat!) on two occasions and, of course, dined out either in the Medina or along the beach front. Take-away crepes also proved popular. Breakfast on the rooftop was particularly memorable (we preferred doing our own breakfast). We did also cook a few of our own dinners and, for our needs, the facilities in both kitchen areas (yes, there are two!) were ideal. We were well looked after by Fouad who speaks excellent English and has a sixth sense as to what might be suitable excursions for guests. On one day trip out we took a tourist taxi and had a fantastic very professional French-speaking guide - a grand-taxi would have been cheaper but we wouldn't have gained as much from the trip. There's lots of great activities to do in Essaouira (horse-riding and biking were our "active" bits), but our abiding memories will be of a laid back seaside town with warm, friendly locals - a great place to chill and recharge the batteries. And Darsal was the perfect base - the restoration of this house/riad has clearly been a labour of love - a good sign is that the owners use it as their own holiday home.

Essaouira his a charming ancient Medina (walled town), it has a colourful and vibrant center with many mysterious and interesting streets and souks to explore. All within walking distance are the historic Portuguese ramparts, a small working fishing port with it's traditional blue boats bringing in the daily catch and the 3 mile long beach, where there are a variety of water sports available. There are no cars allowed inside the Medina, which gives it a very hassle free atmosphere. There are plenty of restaurants which offer a variety of Moroccan, French and Italian cuisine. The climate is temperate and rarely gets above mid 30's. There are many sports and activities available in the area.

Other Activities: land yatching, kite surfing, camel riding, historic sites, small traditional port, souks, hamman, 4x4 off roading and quad biking
